This was so helpful and interesting. Exploring the values of graphite and how they interact should be a part of the eteliers and in-class studies. I know that I am interested in learning more, but I also see other students wanting to ask but thinking that it is something that others know and therefore feel somewhat reserved about asking. Thank you. Also, the KZitem lessons given by Deane Keller that I searched for after seeing this are fantastic. Sadly, the book is nowhere to be bought.

Thanks very much for your feedback. I am so dedicated to this that I'm considering teaching a live, online class which concentrates on the build-up and complex layering involved in graphite pencil (in a practical sense). More on that soon, but I agree with you about Deane. His book has vanished, which is part of what I'll be asking his brother about when we hold an event in Deane's honor on February 28, 2024.

Yes indeed - and graining is used more than artists realize; Seurat and von Menzel were naturals at it. 🤘

Thanks for sharing Dan! Great quote by Deane Keller in beginning of video: “Bring more than materials to the work of the studio; bring ideas, expectations, resolve, and bring your strengths and weaknesses.” I especially like that he said to bring both your strengths and weaknesses.

I would enjoy seeing that! Since The Draftsman's Handbook was a photocopy (literally) it has needed and image update of high res pics, a broader array of drawings from his career (including teaching drawings, which he gave away) for many years.

@@danthompsonfineart Here in Paris, "academic" education has almost disappeared; it's been mocked since the time of the Impressionists. At the same time, the knowledge amassed over centuries has been tossed into the great bin of forgetfulness, all in the name of a dogmatic embrace of modernity. A big thank you for your pedagogical efforts for the curious (you also say lovely things about the language that resonate with me).

@@airg75 It is downright impossible to overstate the impact that your creative culture had on figurative painting and drawing - so much of the scholarship today revolves around our attempts to rediscover, and incorporate into the context of this 21st century, the innovations the French Academicians made in the realm of education. I am awestruck by the industriousness of your ancestors, who understood so much, centuries ago. As grateful as I am for the Parisian French Academy, I remain equally baffled by the thick-headedness which overtook art school education over the 20th century - what a wasteland of misplaced ambition it was. These next 100 years will be different, I hope.
