Great, great demo. Excellent production. It's so rare to find a demo that doesn't bury the sound of the gear being demoed with the kind of buzz-saw, bone crushing distortion that makes every bit of gear in a signal chain indistinguishable. I only wish you played more riffs on the bass strings - particularly with the neck pickup where things can get woolly/woofy so we can really tell how clear these pickups are across the spectrum.

This is an amazing review that really shows the potential of the gear that you're reviewing by using well produced clean tones. One bit of feedback that I'd like to leave is that I think it would have helped if the text indicating the current pickup setting stayed on screen rather than faded out. This review has gotten me even more excited for the versatility that the P-Rail has to offer.

Well, I've been living under a rock I guess as this is the first I've heard about SD P-Rails. Someone had their thinking cap on when these were created. And that switching system.......wow! Great demo! I recently installed a P-Rail (with the triple-shot ring) in the bridge position of a Squier Jagmaster. The stock PUP was ok, but it sounded weak after I put a GFS Mean 90 (humbucker sized P-90) in the neck. The P Rails sounds great, and really complements the Mean 90. I am really happy with the sounds that are available, however the single coil vs. P-90 sounds are not wildly distinct from each other. Both sound closer to a P-90 to me, but I’m fine with that. The humbucker sounds and availability of phase-switching were just what I was looking for, and I love the P-90 setting in the middle position. Just be careful with the triple shot ring - the connector at the base of the ring is delicate and has been known to break off.

Idk exactly what a rail pickup usually sounds like but the rail setting sounded pretty much like a single coil pick up. The humbucker and p-90 settings sounded spot on too. One of the best youtube reviews for gear I've watched and I can really hear the differences between the various PU combos. Dig how you played over the same progression, but didn't feel the need to play the exact same solos. Regarding the SD Triple Shot pickup rings. Did you select all the various options: (HB Parallel, HB Series, Single Coil, P90) by just using the Triple Shot switches, or did you have to chnage the wiring of the guitar and use pull switches on the tone/volume controls?
@ToneKingReviews

Thanks for the response Tone King! So the little switches seem like it would be awkward to use in real time, as opposed to pull knob. Have you found that so? Marty B Hey Marty, I found them pretty easy to use. The only thing you have to be careful about is the switches on the bridge pickup can move when palm muting. With a bit of practice though, they work quite well! If you decide to go with push/pull, I think you can achieve the same effect as the switches if you install push pull switches on bot hate volume & the tone pots. Glad you enjoyed the vids man! There'll be a lot more to come!

I'm new to your channel but will be checking out more of your videos shortly. Since this video is from quite some time ago, I'm curious how the Tripe Shot switches have held up for you? If the demo is for the pickups, I would think a less cluttered signal path would have been ideal. Dont get me wrong. It sounded great, but I feel like the processing made all of the settings sound more alike than they otherwise would have. Thanks
@ToneKingReviews
10 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean by a less cluttered signal path bro. Signal path is this: Guitar - Marshall Bluesbreaker - Fender Twin. For recording chain it was the Sennheiser e906 directly into a Chandler Abbey Roads Passive TG Channel with only very slight limiting from the TG-1 straight into the IZ Radar. I think maybe it's either my playing that is making you think they all sound the same or you need to listen on some better speakers/headphones in HD, cause the difference is HUGE when I listen to the sounds...
@IPushHard
10 жыл бұрын
Tone King Reviews If you were plugged straight to the amp then maybe the pickups just aren't for me then? or maybe I need to hear them clean. My speakers are fine. I can hear the difference in tone between an ash guitar and a mahogany guitar that are otherwise identical.
@ToneKingReviews
10 жыл бұрын
IPushHard I dunno bro. Some people say that they don't sound enough like singles & P-90's, & I can hear where they are coming from. They are definitely "Hybrid" type pickups, I'd suggest you get one for the neck position of your guitar & try it out to see how it sounds on your rig with your playing. Sometimes that 's the only way to know for sure. Another thing you can try is to see if anyone you know has them in their guitars or if any of the local music stores have guitars with them installed for demo purposes & try it out. They are great pickups, that much I can tell you. I was a bit weirded out by them at first because of the very high output & the mid boost they have, but once I adjusted to their sound, I really fell in love with them. Now they are indispensable to me. I use different settings on a bunch of different songs, although I must confess it's the neck pickup that I tend to change the most. (Which is why I suggested you try just that one first.) Hope that helps man. If you do try them out, lemme know what you think!

Great review, thank you. I'm concerned about the single coil hum (in the single coil and p90),. My music room generates a lot of hum on my single coil pickups. What is your experience with hum with these pickups? Also, your outro tune, "In and out of time", sounds great, what pickup setting was used on that?
@ToneKingReviews
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, they will hum like any single coil pickup. There's a few things you can do that will help minimize noise: First is when you are recording/playing, try turning around in a semi circle to find the quiet spot & play from there. You can also turn off any fluorescent lighting & any lighting that has a dimmer switch & only use lamps. If it's still really bad, you can try getting a 1:1 isolation transformer. You can build them relatively inexpensive, or you can buy them starting around 80.00 for a Morley Hum Exterminator. Hope that helps!

Did u have to adjust volume in between pickup changes or are they that even in volume my guitar has a coil split on it it works but is a much quieter setting great sounds
@ToneKingReviews
3 жыл бұрын
I set the volume of my pickups by adjusting the height of the pickups in relation to themselves & the strings. I usually leave about 1/8" - 1/4" between the op of the bridge pickup & the strings, then lower the neck pickup until they match. Sometimes you have to raise both cause the neck pickups ends up in the pickup cavity. This happens because there is much more string vibration up by the neck than at the bridge, thereby generating a much stronger electro-magnetic field which results in louder volume. That's why so many people prefer overwound pickups in the bridge position. It's to make up for the loss of string vibration/energy.

@ToneKingReviews
10 жыл бұрын
Actually, the SP is a compressor, & the EP is a boost. BUT... In the case of using SP compressors, because they run parallel, you could easily swap out the EP for another SP & it'd work just as well. The SP's are really cool cause you can dial in the exact amount of compression you want with your original signal from 100% dry to 100% wet. I'm actually running my SP & EP before my gain now so that when I hit them, they drive the OD pedals as well. (I run my gain on the OD's a little lower to compensate) To try to answer your original question, some people prefer the compression after OD cause they think it sounds more natural, but I think you can get it to sound natural either way so long as you use them properly. There has to be a reason to run a comp in your guitar rig. If you're not using it as a specific tool, you likely don't need it. I use mine for a few different jobs: 1. To tame any wild squealing frequencies when using my wah pedal on a clean tone. 2. To get more of a funky, spank sound if & when needed. 3. To allow the softer more subtle parts of my playing to come through in the mix when playing clean. I also use it as a boost for lead work which has the added benefit of adding more sustain as well! Compressors are the greatest tools on the planet for sound if you know how to use them. I even use them in place of EQ's in the studio!

The thing is that the average person is going to be running this through a single amp with some pedals. No rack mounted preamps to provide slight compression to sweeten the sound. If you simply had a microphonee going into an apogee (or other interface) directly into PT or other software it would be more of an honest sample. I have these pickups in a Reverend Gil Parris model with the SD rings. Honestly, they do nothing for me, that guitar gathers dust, its the last one I choose even though it has very playable neck and action. To each his own.
@ToneKingReviews
8 жыл бұрын
+9999plato Hey Plato, the recording chain I used is not altering the sound any more than recording into an apogee mic pre & running a Neve & 1176 plugin would. The mic pre & compressor are adding a bit of colour & character for sure, & the apogee mic pre's are definitely less coloured, but the bulk of the tone is coming from the guitar, the pickups & the amp. (And my playing to whatever extent that factors in.) It's possible that the pickups aren't a good match for the guitar you have them in, or the guitar is not a good match for your amp, or a number of other possibilities. The biggest part of getting great tone is working on the signal chain itself. You have to start by making sure the instrument itself sounds good acoustically & plays well, so start unplugged to see how loud the guitar is on its own, how much sustain it has, if it has any dead spots etc. If the guitar is good, then plug it straight into the front of your amp. If it doesn't sound killer right out of the gate, it's a matter of changing the guitar, the amp or both. Only once you know the guitar/amplifier combination is good, can you start trying overdrive & effects pedals & changing pickups. It's very rare that changing pickups alone will make or break your tone.

Hey Arrowhead, Jazzmaster pickups are very unique sounding & I don't think that you can actually get the tone any other way than getting the actual pickup. Jazz master pickups differ from both single coils & humbuckers or P-90's in several ways: They are built just like single coils with magnetized pole pieces as opposed to steel pole pieces with a magnet mounted to the base plate as is the case with humbuckers & P-90's, & while they are actual single coils, they are wound wider than single coils, but with a much shallower depth than P-90's. So while the P-Rails might bring you a little closer to the Jazzmaster tone, I doubt they will take you all the way. I think if you really want to nail the Jazzmaster tone, you should probably sell your HH model & put the $$$ towards a model that has the standard Jazzmaster pickups installed. (Or just het another Jazzmaster & then you'll always have a backup guitar...) lol That's what I'd do!!!

+Tone King Reviews Thanks for the feedback! I've thought about getting Jazzmaster pickups but in case they aren't what I'm looking for, would these P-Rails be compatible with my Jazzmaster?

Yes they are, they drop right into any standard humbucker route, so you're good to go!
