Lol, no, I wouldn't assume that. If you're a "professional busker," you're not doing it for fun - you need the $$ to live. So you keep singing even if you're experiencing (even significant) vocal discomfort, unfortunately. In most cases, no one is safeguarding or looking out for your vocal well-being, and you get used to singing feeling terrible. You keep going until you can't anymore. Hoping this isn't the scenario with Tones and I; presumably at this point, if it ever was, she's now got plenty of access to resources to help with a sustainable vocal approach.

She said she had a professional look at her vocal chords. Apparently her vocal folds are smaller and is unable to sing all the notes in a lower register, however, when sings higher she can sing all the notes. Tones said she hasn’t had any singing lessons, although probably a good idea to keep her voice healthy long term.

My husband and i watched her music video after hearing the song because we were so intrigued by her sound. Cracked us up! It's so unique and different- finally a woman singing for the sake of singing and not dressed in a one piece with heels. We love when the song comes on the radio

Her other songs, including a cover of Hey Ya on KZitem, are as good or better than this. Her lyrics aren't vapid disco pop. They use the genre to talk about complicated issues. This one? Dancing as a metaphor isn't just happy nonsense. It's painful when you keep having to. So as you dance to it, are you part of the solution or the problem? I love that she's taking on issues that matter to her in these very boppy songs. She speaks without affect btw. But says she's sung like this all her life. Some interviews on KZitem as well. Interesting backstory. Talented young, hardworking musician. She's gonna be around for a while.

She said herself in an interview this song is all about her busking while she was trying to make it big. The phrases, ie, "I love the way you shine" "you make me wanna cry" etc were all compliments she heard while performing on the street. She said basically replace the word dance with sing in the song and it makes perfect sense. Not quite a profound meaning, but a good story.

Rizzo Basiliere i heard “they say dance for me” and immediately thought of like “dance monkey dance” not knowing the title. and the repetition takes me to a place of being asked over and over to do something you’re good at. which is flattering but also exhausting (coming from experience). Like when i was younger and id go to church or birthday parties with family they would always ask me, beg me to sing.

My question is how do you know what your own voice is when you can do so many tones and accents and styles? I’ve only learned from imitating singers and it’s been hard finding my own natural voice because I can choose to be more forward or be more compressed and higher or breathy

Her voice has qualities reminiscent of the childlike/doll voices of the early to mid 20th century. The squeaky, high pitched, nasally, whiny type of voice that were very popular in music and films of the era. Very distinctive, especially since it’s pretty uncommon to hear in more modern music.
