Robert Cassard plays "Horizons" by Steve Hackett of Genesis to demonstrate another guitar discovery: the ToneWood Amp. This little effects box requires no external amp at all. Any acoustic guitar with a pickup can now produce gorgeous reverbs, delays and other effects.

Hi, my name is Robert Cassard. I'm a lifelong guitar player, singer-songwriter, producer, and music fanatic. I create Guitar and Recording Discoveries videos with a simple goal: to make YOU a better, happier, more confident musician!
In 2018, after more than 40 years as a pro musician, I started sharing my experiences through easy-to-understand KZitem videos - giving you shortcuts to de-mystify playing, singing and recording.
My "day job" is as a video writer/producer/director. Often it's hard to balance my need to earn a living with my desire to share the pure joy of music through the KZitem videos I make for free.
Your ongoing support means the world to me and encourages me do more of what I love - sharing musical discoveries to help and inspire you! I invite you to become a "Guitar Discoverer” by signing up on Patreon so I can keep providing you the most value I can. / robertcassard

Hi. Welcome back to Guitar Discoveries. I'm Robert Cassard. Today I want to talk about a cool little effects box that works for acoustic guitars only. Basically, it's designed for acoustic guitars. It's called a ToneWood Amp.
It's something that sticks on the back of the guitar through magnetics. Then you plug into the electronics on your guitar, and it provides reverb and other effects. It does this without ever having to plug it into a speaker. That's really the key. The back of the guitar becomes the speaker.
Through a really interesting X-Brace made of a very heavy magnetic metal, you put that inside the back. It has four little pads, you attach it. The ToneWood Amp itself actually attaches all magnetically to the back of the instrument. It has an arm with rubber on it that presses against the back of the guitar and vibrates the guitar. It's just like a speaker. It actually uses the back like the speaker paper, the cone, and pushes sound through along with the regular tone of the guitar.
That's without. If you listen ... that's this guitar all on its own. I'm going to turn on the ToneWood Amp. I'm going to make a couple of adjustments to it. I'm going to use the plate reverb, which is the third voice on here or decay of 13, volume of nine. Now hear what this sounds like.
Hear that reverb. You can tell there's no reverb on my voice, but there's reverb on the guitar. That is all coming from the guitar and the ToneWood Amp that we're using on the back.
I thought to demonstrate this and give you an idea of how it sounds, and how inspirational it can be when you're hanging out in your living room, especially playing instrumental stuff, or playing with friends or whatever, I'm going back to the early 70s. An album called Foxtrot by Genesis, and a guitarist who I greatly admire, Steve Hackett. He wrote a song called Horizons, with a little inspiration from J.S. Bach.
That's a piece of Cello Suite No. 1. I think you'll hear that melody in here. Horizons.
(Plays “Horizons” written by Steve Hackett)
A lot of that ringing sustain is coming from the reverb of the ToneWood Amp. Really cool effect. I really urge you to take a look at this. If you haven't heard one, check out some of the demos that are online. They're really cool.
Price wise, you can usually find these for somewhere between two and three hundred bucks, $250 is a pretty typical number. I personally bought a couple of extra X-Braces so I could put them in some other guitars. I've used it on a 12 string Takamine that I have. Generally, I really like playing with it. It's a lot of fun. It even has a Leslie reverb effect, if you want to go psychedelic with an acoustic guitar! (Laughs) It's pretty fun.
That's your guitar discovery for today: the ToneWood Amp. Something you can find online quite easily. I think it's a really, really fun tool. It makes you want to play more. That's the name of the game for most guitarists who are really trying to improve. Hope you'll join me for more of these. Please subscribe and I'll see you next time.
