After scoring only four points in the first half, Tony Campbell brings the Timberwolves back in the game with a strong effort in the third quarter as he outscored the Chicago Bulls single-handedly during that 12 minute stretch. It was no easy task either. A lot of Campbell's looks came from post ups and isolations against these guys called Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen due to Bill Musselman's slow-down style of play. T.C. actually ended up getting Michael Jordan in foul trouble by repeatedly going at him and beat the somewhat passive MJ in the scoring column 26 to 17.
A couple of other things to look for:
Minnesota using the two guard pick-and-rolls to try and get an advantage for Tony Campbell, a strategy which has come in vogue in today's NBA.
The Chicago Bulls starting to double team Campbell in the fourth upon him catching the ball. Since it was the only possible way to double under the old rules, immediately passing out of it was in a way the only antidote (unless you wanted to go one-on-two). Minnesota didn't find a way to exploit this (and just couldn't hit shots) and thus Campbell was stopped at 26, while Chicago held down their first win of the season. November 7, 1990.
