Nobody’s version captures the real loneliness of the song better and clearer than Tony Joe White. Too beautiful. Holland’s piano is PERFECT.

Well, when he wrote it, he was far from home driving construction trucks and he couldn’t work when it rained, so he wrote this classic. While I love BB’s cover, it pales in comparison. This is the definitive classic.

Saw tjw at the borderline in 2004 down charing cross road...he just walked in the venue carrying his own guitar case..strolled up to the bar..bought himself a bottle of bud then grabbed a bar stool, plugged in his guitar and sat playing for 3 hrs! Then sat with us after his set and sunk a few more beers! Legend! RiP big fella

This song was a huge commercial hit for the late, great Brook Benton, and let me tell you, here is another singer Tony Jo White sounded like. I still have that vinyl recording by Brook as the one (CD) by Tony as well. I did not recall Mr.White was the composer. Tony Joe White was a good singer and a great musician as well. May he rest in peace.
