I had some uncles that worked with Whitey Bulger in Southie from time to time and some guy made an off remark about my aunt to her face and in front of Whitey and he said to my uncle "Do what you need to do." As of the following day the guy spent the rest of his life in a nursing home. I was ten at the time. I wasn't there but my aunt told me years later. There were certain rules of conduct that were followed in those days and it didn't matter your nationality, Italian, Irish, Chinese, everyone followed those rules and one was hands off family. I never found out what was said exactly but I inferred by my aunt's tone that it was something of a sexual nature. My aunt was one of those dear sweet and delicate ladies everyone wish they had married. All the guys loved her. One year she got involved with obtaining toys for kids in Boston, I forget the name of the charity she was involved with but they were having trouble getting enough toys and she said something to one of my other uncles and two day slater an 18 wheeler full of toys mysteriously appeared in the parking lot of the charity and it was unloaded and then drove off. Nobody took credit but she tended to inspire people like that. I shudder to think what would have happened to that guy had he actually laid a hand on her. He'd probably have been found in seven different neighborhoods.

Well, two things. That "someone" was the creep himself. Second, the honor dictates nothing less - because this was the personal insult and attack on the family member. Now, that being said, I still think Tony is a scum of the earth and I think that romanticizing guys like him in series like this (as many did before and after with all types of criminals) is an extremely bad thing for society. But, yes, honor dictates that if you or your family member is insulted or, in extreme, assaulted, you need to retaliate personally. Remember the term "fighting words"? Back in a day, you needed to watch your mouth very carefully, otherwise there was a glove in your face (at best) or an immediate attack for those words. And guess what? People REALLY watched what they said - because it could have easily been the last things they said. Paradoxically, it was a more brutal time, yet more civil. Today, we try to maintain the civil society with a bunch of abstract laws and outsource our integrity and honor to some institution. A result being that we don't have honor, we don't have integrity and a person can insult and even assault your entire family and walk away. They can rape your daughter or son, and get a few years in prison, halved for "good behavior". Back in a day, generational vendettas were started over things like those. And by simple folks, not some nobles that the same approach, but on steroids. But, times changed. And once more, screw the character like Tony Soprano and any other scumbag romanticized by modern entertainment industry.

Throughout that season Tony had been putting up with this guy and butch's attitude towards him while their boss was in the hospital after a heart attack. Even went as far as letting Butch get away with making him walk around him and telling Tony "we gotta stop meeting like this" while standing all up in his face. This was after Tony visited their boss in the hospital.
