Apart from being a true master and pioneer at drums, I think people overlook how much of an influence Tony had on Herbie Hancock. Not taking anything away from HH, but before their association Herbie was hardly polyrhythmic, you could even say he was fairly tame in the rhythm department. Let's not forget that most early HH developed thru Miles and thus with Ron Carter on bass, together with 500 albums with all kinds of other people during those Blue Note times. Which were more or less pretty demure BeBop times. And I would never take anything away from HH or RC, but none of that stuff from that era had the fiery, borderline crazy, yet dynamically expressive intensity of Tony until Tony came along. Nobody can say that TW was not a major, major influence on all of the Miles quintet records. TW opened doors that were previously unknown.

+Eric Gutierrez You can't tell me much about Vinnie, Eric. You definitely can't tell me anything about Frank. I could give you catalogue numbers!!! Vinnie is absolutely ridiculously sick, I know that. But, Mr. Williams is just my preference after hearing too much mediocre session work from Vinnie. But, I guess after Frank got the best out of him, Vinnie don't have to prove anything anymore. Remember, Eric, it's just my personal taste. Plus, Vinnie went all God liking. Took the shine off my once number one. So, I suggest to you that you explore Tony Williams a bit more, then make an informed decision and come back to me. Let's get this straight, first... Vinnie is the closest second anybody could ever get, for me. I still love his playing immensely. Ok? :D

Tony was one of the only drummers to cross over to rock music.
@jimmiew1812
2 жыл бұрын
Well, let's qualify that shall we. Tony was an epic jazz drummer and later an epic fusion drummer. He at most dabbled in rock. A drummer of that caliber would have been bored out of his mind playing mostly rock. ("4 Chords That Made a Million"...that Porcupine Tree referred to in song. You see rock drummers crossover to jazz, such as Simon Phillips, but not the other way around. Jazz is MUCH more complicated to play and to listen to. Most musicians want to be challenged and stretched to their full potential. Find some stuff where Tony is playing with Miles. That is where you will find great musicianship. The improvisations and conversations are thing of beauty.
