Lower your expectation for your children and you will have no problem raising a family of ten. Remember the old days without public healthcare and death is a lot more common on the streets, if families wanted more income they had to make more children because they die a lot more. Little to no attention was given to education because, well, they die a lot. Now we have public healthcare and expectation for children increased significantly, since children won't die easily people start giving them education, very expensive education. If we reduce healthcare spending and lower expectation for children (a.k.a expecting them to die a lot more), it will be a lot more easier to raise a family of ten

Sweden has a low birth rate, 1.7, but compensates with a huge immigration. In fact, our population has increased by around 15% in the last 10 years only due to immigration. Since we also have one of the highest life expectancies in the world, 83 years, I guess we need plenty of people to take care of our elders. In fact, almost everyone who works in such a job is foreign born. All these issues are not because of population. 1) First of all The amount of resources available on Earth are massive. Indias agriculture productivity per hectre of land is very less. If India had technology used by Netherlands our agriculture produce would double/triple. 2) In terms of other resources a lot more use of organic materials is being used...& Organic resources are pretty much infinite. Also with renewable energy technology we have access to unlimited energy. 3) Employment is not a finite umber. What is a job ?? its a service you provide to another human being...more the number of people...more the number of jobs. The problem in India is that people are not productive & many gov policies are not allowing productivity to grow. Thus we have these issues 4) US with 1/4 the population creates far more waste & environmental degradation. If city are well designed with good density the environmental degradation will be minimum. 5) The overcrowding you see has lot more to do with city design. Tokyo is the most populated city...yet because they allow mixed use zoning, walkable city & public transportation....they dont get horrendous traffic like cities in India. The problem in India is that cities have given priority to car infrastructure. Cars take up too much space & thus no matter how wide you build a road there will always be traffic.

We wanted to be lifelong bachelors; 2.) get a VASECTOMY VOLUNTARILY as soon as possible (we did, with our own money, having become economically independent in our early 20s; 3.) Reproduction manifests itself via the mother, but it is _exclusively_ the moral responsibility of the Father, therefore, seeing that *the OVERPOPULATION BOMB can be solved in a few generations unilaterally by Men* alone, _we must take responsibility, _*_as males_* (and we did). There's also this to consider: regardless of where one is born, what one does, to a greater or lesser degree, everywhere life is full of misery, suffering, gratuitous humiliation, and of course disease. Are you, potential father, as the seed-providing parent, as opposed to the fruit-bearing one, willing to accept the moral burden of the fact that all the pain that your child will undergo s/he will suffer simply because you chose to inflict 70-90 years of existence on an innocent human being for a momentary pleasure of yours? Yes, if your daughter gets raped, ultimately, you her father raped her, because you gave her the flesh that _could_ be raped; if your son is beaten up and crippled, you his father maimed him, for you gave him that body which _could_ be harmed! If you're able to shoulder this moral burden, with equanimity, then by all means go impregnate your consort as many times as she'll let you. If not, take permanent 100% fail-proof precaution: go get a *VV* , *VOLUNTARY VASECTOMY* , even before you have sex for the first time (as I & my brother did). And, believe me, *VV has absolutely NO effect on erectile function or your sex life*, except perhaps to improve it! There'd then be no need, ever, for an abortion, which should be legal but remains a sin. So not only "one child less": men should be given to understand that there's no shame in *opting for Zero kids* ; they will have to overcome their egoistic obsession with the perpetuation of their clan, family name, showing off their potency etc. And I totally agree that there should be no coercion to make people have smaller families. If they choose to have too may kids, they ought to be left to their own devices, for better or worse. The only help the larger society should provide to suchlike will be Enlightenment.

there is a lot of wrong assumptions in you thinking. The more the number of people..the more the innovation ....also the more number of jobs. With decreasing population there will be lesser economic growth & lesser jobs. Just look at Japan where people arent able to get full time proper jobs. Also property values have a lot to do with city design. If you have mixed use development & allow some density (like 4-5 floor apartments) then you will have stable property values. In japan even though japans population is shrinking..Tokyo's has actually increased. Yet they have stable property prices because of good city design.

Overpopulation is a problem - but goes hand in hand with over-consumption. Per capita and overall consumption is far less in India (which is like 50 percent vegetarian) than most of the Western world. I suspect the same goes for china and most of africa. Areas which are "over"populated have always been highly populated - and are following their natural course - most studies show that population will stabilize and drop in 70 years or so. The west can't keep consuming the way it does and point fingers at developing world.

There are FAR too many people alive on the planet all at once. What we need is for large numbers of people to freely commit to having either no children or to one or two, maximum. If we were on the outside looking at any other species, we'd all be in agreement that sheer numbers themselves have an impact on the environment. Yet, many people have convinced themselves that our numbers are not a problem, and try to export all of the blame onto issues that are only pieces of the larger picture, such as uneven consumption and wasteful consumption.

No one outside of a few very crowded countries needs to worry about overpopulation. The west is nowhere close to as densely populated as some parts of the world and our birth rate is already low. We should not tell other regions of the world how many kids they should have. If they prefer to have more people, despite that meaning less resources per person, that is their choice. We should be more worried about our low birth rates and should stop criticizing other regions for having children. I am a westerner, but my family values are closer to other regions and I think they have the right priorities and we are wrong to risk collapsing our civilizations by having so few children. Africa has a high birth rate but their population is not high yet, so they have plenty of time to gradually slow down to a sustainable rate. Africa is a huge continent and can definitely sustain as much population as just China + India. They have fertile lands around the Great Lakes, and new water management and agricultural technology can let them produce food from less ideal farmlands. I am much more worried about our low population in the West. Africa will be fine. Parts of Asia are overcrowded in my opinion but we are in no place to criticize when we have such an extreme case of the opposite problem.

Yas! Antinatalism! Finally! I don't know how we'll take care of old people, but I have even less idea how we can sufficiently reduce our environmental footprint. The pain of taking care of seniors will pale in comparison to the pain of being unable to rebuild the world's ice sheets. Once those melt, the mountain that we'd have to climb to get back to a state where ice sheets build up, rather than melt down (as is the case now) will probably be insurmountable. Once the ice sheets are gone, dark surfaces will be exposed, increasing the amount of heat from the Sun absorbed by the Earth, rather than being reflected back out into space by white ice sheets. At that point, even if we could instantly pump out all the carbon dioxide that we've dumped into the atmosphere (ever since the industrial revolution), it might not be enough to rebuild the ice sheets. If so, we'll be in a climatic rut too deep (or at least overwhelmingly expensive) to climb back out of :S Of course, the climate is not the only aspect of the environment that would benefit from less people. Another example is plastic pollution. When archeologists in the far future dig up Earths crust, our time will be marked by a layer of plastic. Basically, no environmental problem is solved with larger population. All environmental problems are lessened when there are less people. It's really as simple as that. At a certain point, the "load" (by whatever measure you want) created by humans on the planet becomes, well, bearable. We are clearly far exceeding that now, and the trend is very very in the wrong direction! The only way to not run over the water fall is to make a 180 degree turn, and push ahead, away from the precipice.

That guy Robin Maynard from the organization Population Matters is one of those people who generally believes that humans are a strain on the world, a burden for nature, and ultimately 'bad'. That is an opinion some agree with and others don't, but it is an opinion, not a fact. I believe humans have made the world a much better place and that we will continue to do so. All our environmental problems can be solved by human ingenuity just as we have already solved many of our problems. Things will probably get worse before they get better, but that has always been the case. I believe a decreasing human population is ultimately much more damaging to the world than an increasing population. But all within limits, of course. However, even without encouragement to limit births, we will probably ultimately have fewer babies going forward, so global population decline may be inevitable.

Even though this report covers some important nuances, the idea that population growth is one of the main problems we face in terms of climate change and nutrition is a dangerous one. It puts the focus on countries that contribute the fewest emissions while rich and aging countries get away here. Also having one less child instead of changing behaviors and practices is some of the worst advice I’ve heard recently! Even with a much smaller population we cannot continue polluting our planet the way we currently are. This has very little to do with population growth.
