Bro, your Tool series has been fantastic, but I think it's time for you to appreciate their body of work on your terms. Listening thru the albums like books in a series changes how the music is consumed, and I HIGHLY recommend it. Side note - Cold & Ugly is one of my top 5 Tool tracks! I was first shown the Opiate ep when I was 9. 30 damn years ago hahaha

Yes i agree 100% going through each a;bum one by one adds a whole new dimension to their music and just elevates the ones that stick with you that much more;. Hearing the evolution of their music and how each album flows on their own really made me appreciate a lot of songs I overlooked at first or just dismissed altogether; it’s crazy how much I discovered just by taking each album from beginning to end. It’s hard to explain but any Tool fan knows you can’t explain it, it’s something you experience when listening. It never gets old cause there’s always something more to discover;

Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off" were recorded specially for the album at the Jellö Loft on New Year's Eve 1991 with a live audience. As a result, these two songs have never been available as true "studio" recordings except for the band's 1991 demo tape 72826.

I'd recommend you continue the TOOL reactions. Quite simply their music has climbed up a high mountain and is pissing down on most other music from a great height. Not to say they're gods or superhuman because a good portion of what they do is meant to mess with people. (The subtitles are think for yourself and don't ever believe any one person has "arrived" and deserving of your fealty. Anyone who doesn't keep that in perspective jolts and lurches like a jerky trigger from a marionette yoke. )

I love the EP Opiate, it's what hooked me in 30 years ago. This track "Cold and Ugly" segues into the next track "Jerk Off" from the same live show, and it's just as good. Love watching you hear my favorite band for the 1st time, keep listening brother!

Back when their live shows would punch you in the face instead of fuck w/ your head. Don’t get me wrong, today’s Tool is phenomenal. But when you grew up watching Maynard in the front of the stage instead of trying to find him to the side of the big video screen, & listened to the band because of their anger instead of their introspection, that music & version of Tool will always be your favorite. It’s certainly mine.

I remember when I heard TOOL for the first time it was with the Lateralus album - still on a cassette. I was searching for their older stuff but couldn't find it until a re-issue of the three previous studio albums was available. I was lucky and got the trio in one pick. My friends when they heard that I have the three first albums went berserk. I copied the tapes at least 20 times as these were just not available at the time. I was a Tool dealer for a while. I remember that Opiate (from which Cold and ugly is) fit in its entirety on one side, so it was convenient to put that on both A and B side. Fast forward 20 something years and I went to my friend gig whom I haven't seen since I moved out of the neighborhood. One of the first things he said when he saw me was, "Thanks for that Tool tape". It seems it has sparked a fire and love for music that is with him till this day. Anyway, enough of my ramblings. Have a good day Polo!

I didn’t even know that the song existed before today, but then I also knew there was a good chunk of the tool catalog that I was missing. But whatever you do, do not stop doing these reactions. Your reactions are similar to what it was like for me when I listen to them for the first time they’re on a whole Nother level. Granted our reactions are a little different because well we’re different people I’m a musician first and foremost, so I always pay attention to that aspect more than the lyrics. One day I was riding along in the car with my brother and he would ask me why I get so quiet what a tool song was on. And I said well it’s because I’m following the music. I didn’t know how to explain it back then, but he sort of have to hyper focus or you’ll miss something. Which brings me back to why I love this band so much because it’s a challenge and it makes you think in the sheer complexity of it is drew me to the whole progressive rock and metal scene. I like to have something to think about when I’m listening to a song Besides just lyrics

I like that you're getting into Tool stuff that isn't the typical "reaction" songs. You probably won't get as much views but I think they're all well worth doing. I for one will listen to all of them, it's great to go back to stuff I grew up on and see someone else hearing it for the first time. Funny side note - as you started talking about liking Adam's guitar style, I was going to suggest Pink Floyd, and you immediately followed up with that, LOL. Yeah, Adam is all about texture and mood, not flappin his dick all around in your face

Your journey reminds me of mine into hip hop and psychedelic rock after growing up a metal/punk kid. I still love all those genres and many more at age 36. I wonder if you would dig Zero Signal by Fear Factory. They are all about the tight rhythm, and massive heaviness. But offer so much more, with clean singing and harsh vocals. Somewhere between Tool and Slipknot, but their own vibe.
