@@Danimal77 I have been a fan since the early 90's too and while I don't think it is one of their best tracks. I thought maynards voice seemed off at first, but listening more and more and he and danny are the best parts of this song. What is obvious is that this song wasnt written as a unit, while maynards voice is beautiful the songwriting is a bit off in places. where the song should rise and explode it just coasts and meanders. Adam and Justin are doing nothing for me on this track. Adam has used his instrument to create tension and atmosphere on previous tracks, here he is just playing repetitive riffs with no accents or unusual passages. justin as well is just playing by the numbers. I just hope they have some better ideas on the rest of the album. Danny is firing on all cylinders, but it feels like hes overcompensating for the lack of interesting guitar work.

My thoughts are that it's interesting when a band probably spent months, if not years (in this case it took 13 to bring this record to market) writing and recording new music, and someone can give a track one listen and form an opinion. I think the person who gave that opinion, it's safe to say, is not truly qualified to give a good opinion of the song. Even though we all have a right to say whatever we want about anything we want...it doesn't make us qualified to do so. I think it's sad that so many unqualified opinions get so much authority and credence on these kinds of things. The fact of the matter is, TOOL is a great band. They have been doing it at a very high level for a very long time and they are a mature band. A fully realized band. To expect some kind of reinvention of what they are is absurd in my opinion. Did you ever consider that they actually just like "what they are?" I have listened to this record several times. It's absolutely fantastic to listen to while you are doing something else, like working on the computer. I find myself discovering new nuances from it all the time, which does not surprise me, considering all the work that went into it. It's just funny that something that took so long to bring to market, and clearly a lot of work was spent on, is given a flippant one off cookie cutter opinion. It's just what I said. Anybody has a right to an opinion on anything, but it doesn't make their opinion qualified, and I'm sorry but I seriously doubt you have givenvthis record the time and respect that it deserves to have a qualified opinion on the subject. The joke is that you and all these other dumb ass reviews get way more authority than you deserve on these records.

Yeah, i felt a little underwhelmed too, initially. But it grew on me after a number of listens. I am loving the track now. I just had to get used to the track taking its time after things like Jambi. And, yeah, it sounds familiar. There are moments in it when you think back to stuff like Reflection, because drums and base line sound similar. Same with Invincible/Jambi. I think this is intentional, but still, i know what you mean. However, there is a lot of new things in this track, for me at least. I have been learning tool's guitar riffs for about 3 years now, and guitar wise, there is a lot of new stuff here. Maybe not in riff composition/timing, but definitely in new technical ideas and tone. It almost sounded too different for me, actually. And that's why i disliked it at first :) P.S. the intro swells sound like a guitar effect + volume pedal for me, not synths. Adam Jones loves his volume pedal swells.

Tool by-the-numbers bugged me on 10,000 Days. Here though? Not so much. It's been 13 years since they've dropped an album. Some by-the-numbers elements don't bug me nearly as much. It's honestly refreshing to hear these tropes again, because no band really does them all that much; and when they do, they're horrible at it. Whereas Tool nails it.

Since Lateralus their songs have been losing their identity. Before that each song seemed to have a deliberate quality, progressions that propelled the song to another phase that had real chemistry, real inspiration. 10,000 days sounded as though they were simply going through the motions a bit, long slow burners with a turbulent ending but having never really taken off. I just think the magic of their sound has gone, the chemistry in their music was so insane and almost overwhelming at times. I think this is the case for a lot of bands, there's a peak where all aggregates of their musicianship and art synchronizes, ripens and then sadly kinda wilts.

I feel like it grew on me as well, the chorus is fucking incredible. It isn't my favorite song by them but I also haven't heard it for years and years. I'm sure in the review he will listen to the album several times over and come with a more succinct opinion, I still think its about a 6-8 for Anthony, I can't see him having many different thoughts for Descending and Invincible. I think this is what I wanted from the band so far. Probably an 8 or so unless the last 4 tracks are shit or something. My main excitement comes from just tool being back, maybe this album will be a bit rusty for them, maybe not. They already said that they want to write music till they physically can't so I am certain they will continue to grow. This is much better than most expected. It's tool by the numbers, but I still play Aenima and Lateralus constantly. I think it will likely be at least as good as 10,000 days which is another polarizing one. :D

I agree with your observations. I LOVE this band, AENIMA and LATERLALUS are my favourite records of all time, they mean sooooo much to me on so many different levels, and here's a new song 13 years after their last album. And I love it. It brings back the mystical atmosphere and lyrical depth of Lateralus (and the drum sound, too!) and puts the listener on a fascinating journey. If you're a TOOL fan, you'll love this. However, some of the parts do sound like rehashed parts from previous songs - e.g. the drum pattern at the beginning is basically "Reflection". And Maynard's spoken words parts sound like Puscifer and the latest APC album. Still - great to have a new Tool album that has a lot of atmosphere and the kind of amazing musicianship you don't often hear nowadays - or ever.
