This guy nailed it. It's incredibly difficult to emulate Danny Carey. So many polyrythms and odd time signatures make him a 'mysterious' drummer haha. This guy obviously has spent a lot of time practicing this song though, very well done.

Plus the guys like 6' whatever" & 200+ lbs. He's a beast! Watching Danny live, it's like he's a giant playing the set. Such a skilled musician. Plus he's the oldest one in the group with the most experience. It wasnt like this guy formed a band, made it, & progressed from there. He was a musician for hire. For a career. Constantly playing... Did I mention his size?

Good point about how their music allows you to immerse yourself. I really love how their music is not one-dimensional, but also how the band members don't get too caught up in how awesome their music is. They all seem to be pretty humble about it, even Maynard in his own way, haha.

Danny's drums is what got me into listening to Tool. He makes them feel "alive", for a lack of a better word to describe the feeling. They're not there just to give the rythm for the other instruments or to be a background beat. They sound free and ever changing, evolving as the song progresses. He writes masterpieces, that man. And you play them very damn well, sir John, keep up the great work! :)

If you're watching a no-name drummer at a show, you'd want him to be eye-opening, not someone who does a lame, mainstream solo...so John opened my eyes with his creativity and coordination with the guitar at his solo! Loved how he used rolling patterns and dark-sounding tom beats which added depth along with the droning, killer guitar outro.

I love your videos. As ridiculous as it sounds I want to learn to drum just to learn to play Tool (yes, I know how that sounds). There's not a lot of video, I've seen, of Danny Carey where you can study his drumming so your vids are really interesting. So much power, so much technicality, you are as good as anyone I've heard play Tool short of Carey, plus you seem to have fun with it. An apparently extensive collection of Vans is icing on the cake. Thanks for posting these.

@AllanR3z4 The image of a snake entwined on a staff is currently mostly associated with an ambulance (EMS 'star of life'), which is most similar to the Greek Rod of Asclepius (god of medicine). But images of coiled snakes go far beyond medicine and healing. Also known as the Caduceus, a symbol of the Greek god Hermes, inventor of magical incantations, and thus important to alchemist, but also to the hermetic arts, where it has come to be associated with mysticism and chakras around the spine.
