thanks Max, I'm here after watching Curtis from Cutting Edge Engineering of australia make a shop made heavy duty tool post grinder. I could not figure out what it does, and now after watching your video I understand the need to do a fast clean up grinding vs the lathe. thank you for the demonstration

I have put shim stock in between the live center and center hole to get the bar to run true. That is one way to fudge it. Try plastic shim stock or aluminum foil. Could also shim the center hole to get the shaft to run true, mount a cat head and skim cut it to true that, and run the steady rest on the cathead to redrill or single point bore the center hole. If you would need that center hole true and didn't want to mar the shaft surface with the steady rest.

Hi Max, like the Macpherson chart on the wall, bought a 4" Dawn fabricated vise from them back in the seventies in Vic Park. We had a huge flat bed Macphersons lathe which was pretty well flogged out and replaced it with a LeBlond Regal. Blackwoods has the market pretty well covered now.

When I first started getting gear I bought a knock off of a Noga and I'll admit it has it's issue's. I bought a Noga later on and a very nice jeweled Federal dial indicator to go on it. The Noga and the knock off sit on my lathe side by side, I still reach for the knock off that has a Peacock dial indicator on it. I know where it's weaknesses are and how to work around them now from using it for so long. For the life of me I don't know why I don't use the Noga, all I can think is where I have used the other one for so long it's just become habit to use it. I will admit if I am having to use a test indicator and dealing in the .0001 then I use the Noga because it is sturdier but for dial indicators the other one does the job and I can hit the mark with it if I'm dealing in the .001 range without issue. Strange how we become creatures of habit.

@@swanvalleymachineshop Ordered one similar to yours today. I had one that was a cheaper one my father had bought years ago but he let it rust up and the mag knob didn't want to turn. I ended up getting a Craftsman mag base with a Federal C81S for $42 US plus shipping. Both pieces look like new, someone had scribed 1978 on it.

Hi Max, Each to his own, but whenever I'm doing something like this I move the steady as close to the chuck as I can and set the steady there, then move it up to the other end and fasten it in place, if both ends are the same diameter, you will be dead knacker.

Hello Max from Brisbane. Can I suggest for the hard material slow the work rpm down a lot. Also try Abrasiflex for a 9A 60 K wheel. Good job on the pin. BC
@swanvalleymachineshop
2 жыл бұрын
The first part of the grinding was edited 3 or 4 times faster . The last parts are all actual rpm ! I have found with my TPG , quite often running a too slow surface speed can degrade the finish . Through experience , i have found the best finish can be achieved not directly after a fresh dress but halfway between that and a dull wheel . The wheel that i used , 9A60JV is the only readily available aluminium oxide wheel over here in 100 mm dia . 👍

That job takes me back nearly 40 years, when I spent 3 happy years as a machinist in a hydraulics repair shop, and studying in the evenings. From memory, the Cat shafts had the best case-hardening. I was wondering: would a light grinding pass across the faces to square them from the mushrooming have any benefits? Thanks for sharing.

when you grind off the high spots , doesnt that decrese the overall diameter that the customer now needs a oversize seal or bearing ?

Just taking the high spots off brings the diameter of the damaged areas back to the original size . The high spots were caused by metal deformation on the end of the pin due to sledge hammer blows . 👍

As soon as i saw those centres i though you ain't going to use them - if the end of the shaft is mushroomed god only knows where the centres will run . I remember years a go working as a general hand at a hardchrome joint - the grinder operator spent heaps of time fixing a centre on a ram and doing the pre grind only to see the plater take to the centre with a drill bit and then a 1/2 inch tap ! A Turk vs an Italian - it was like the war in Europe had come to Australia 🤣
