I like the tournament format but might suggest doing within-band rather than between-band tournaments. So maybe take the top 4 fan suggested songs from a band and pit them against each other. That way you get to delve a bit more into a band’s work and judge songs on a more level field.

I literally have no idea who the hell is suggesting these song choices. No real Tool fan would suggest Schism to someone that's only listened to a few Tool songs. This should have been The Grudge, Vicarious, Right in Two, Jambi, Sober to name a few. I'd have even suggested Ticks and Leeches as it's something amazing from them and a departure from their normal material. These are all far more accessible (Jambi might take a few listens to get the structure) and are far better choices for someone that's fairly new to their music. I struggled to understand the choice of Aenima in the first round, and I'm really struggling to understand the choice of Schism here. Overall, I'd have said The Grudge should have been the choice for the first round, and then Vicarious in the second. Hard-hitting lyrics, fantastic musicianship, and they're great songs to bang your head to. Aenima and Schism, just lol!

It may not be "easy" to listen to Tool at first. But a lot of things that are not easy are worth it at he end. The first song I heard around 2000 was "Eulogy". Bought the album for the song and really needed a few weeks to discover it. But once you "get it", there's no way back. It is since then my favorite band, best live show I've ever seen, big influence in drumming. Just amazing.

Even as a TooL fan since the late 90s I find Schism to be an acquired taste. It's a very unique song in their catalogue that's very much in their style but one that goes from being soft to sharp to heavy and back again. It's up there in terms of some their best overall quality of composition and the thoughtfulness in the lyrics left an impression on me for sure. Glad you guys took to the time to listen to it. You're under no obligation to love it but it's a great marker for the type of band TooL is, willing to experiment while still maintaining a coherence of rhythm and melody.

Been a Tool fan for many long years as well, and I'm in the same boat. The big centerpieces on Lateralus jump out at you, but Schism is one of those songs that sneaks up on you. I think his lack of finding a groove is because he's looking in the wrong place. The groove is set by the bass throughout with the drums and guitar playing in all directions on top. He's used to a drum beat groove and the off time drumming is throwing him. Needs to tap his feet to the bass line and he'll feel the groove. What always attracted me to tool was the bass guitar how it's used and the complexity they allow him to perform, rather than just play the root notes for the guitar or lock into the drum for the rhythm. Of course as a former bassist I'm biased but I think even non musician types can appreciate how everyone gets to be free and expressive in tool and showcase the mastery of their instruments.

I'll say this, I was a guitar student growing up in grade school and even knowing things like how to play a triplet it took time for me to really develop a feel for sort of 3 vs 4 style beats, and the same went for stuff not in 4/4 but in the odder time signatures. I still remember the first time my teacher showed me some Meshuggah and I was like "how do you even count this, let alone groove it?" Watching a video will help sure, but in my experience it just takes time and patience and repeated exposure with an open mind.

I agree with justin here. I get where Ryan is coming from, this music isnt something you can steadily bob your head to. But, once you become familiar with the rhythm, you can still bob your head along, albeit in an asymmetrical way. ONE two ONE two three ONE two ONE two ONE two three... once you become familiar with the song and how the melody coincides with the rhythm, it feels pretty natural and I think it's rather rewarding to feel the rhythm along as it flip flops back and forth between different segments of the song

We're more like a cult that follow tool ... Im no fan. More like a member. I'm 41. I was 15 when I first heard tool. I've never ever ever once heard a song that didn't effect my soul Welcome to the following, my friend.

You should totally check out Rick Beato's musical analysis and breakdown of this song. There's a reason you can't groove to it, and that's because there are constantly shifting time signatures and just a whole lot going on musically here that isn't "natural". This is one of my favorites from Tool, and I definitely consider it Tool at their most creative and progessive. kzitem.info/news/bejne/tJmIrWhmmGmrlWU

I was going to suggest this very thing. Plus, isolating Maynard's lyrics, as Rick does, is a special little gift :)

Lots of songs are good, even great but this song is brilliant. This is a piece of art.

"Find the beauty in the dissonance" meaning, appreciate arguments as it's still a form of communication... because "cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion between supposed lovers" Was thankful Ryan acknowledged the writing.

PotawatomiThunderNew hunger strike is great but he doesn’t come close to reaching the range and level of Say Hello To Heaven. Or Times of Trouble too.

John Dorsey that’s true, and even though Hunger Strike is my own personal favorite, I understand why Say Hello 2 Heaven would be some people’s first choice. In fact I don’t think it’s a stretch to include Reach Down In there with what you said about Say Hello 2 Heaven and Times Of Trouble. But I personally think Hunger Strike is a lot catchier, and the back-and-forth between Chris and Eddie has a great balance. To me it’s a good display of a great vocal tag team, you know? And not only that, I also just think it’s a better song to begin with. When it comes to hearing/reacting to a song for the first time, I think Hunger Strike is more of an entry level song, whereas Say Hello 2 Heaven I think it’s better suited to work up to, or build up to. I feel like Say Hello 2 Heaven would be more effective if you lead up to it, rather than just jumping right in with that song. You can savor it a little bit more, if that makes sense. Think of it as desert. And a song like Hunger Strike is part of the meal before dessert. Even though I’m someone would prefers that meal a little bit more than that dessert because of my own taste I know that most others would likely like that dessert the most.
