I remember being just a few feet away from him for most of the show during this era. Small club. Being crushed right up against the stage. Bodies passing overhead. It was like a religious experience. That album changed my life!! So frickin epic. And I barely knew what Maynard looked like until that show, so I was completely mindfucked and mesmerized at 17 years old. They didn’t play their videos yet, I only knew of them from hearing “Part of Me” on a snowboarding video so I bought Undertow then took a vacation in Europe and just listened to it over and over the whole time I was there. After the concert, we mimicked his movements for weeks because he was so weird but unique and amazing too. I remember he made fun of a bunch of “hackey sack playing jocks” that were hanging around before the show because they heckled the opening act. He was pretty pissed off but I think it just made his performance that much better. They’ve been my favourite band since then and I’m in my 40s now.

He has created a persona to adopt on stage, a reflection of the part of himself that is capable of delivering a message. In shamanistic culture, one can employ various tools both external & internal to achieve ecstatic trance. This internal transformation can manifest with hallucinatory visions & symptoms of physical euphoria. Or he's just tripping his ass off, who knows?

His music influenced the direction of my life when I was 15 years old. I ran away at 15 and I remember feeling so lost but so certain of the choice I made to leave. I was introduced to his music at that time and it helped me to begin cultivating a stronger relationship with myself. I’ve listened to his music (almost religiously 😆) since then. I was raised in a home with pain and suffering, misery, self hate, void of love. That’s all I knew as a child. Finding his music helped connect me to my humanity, to my spirit. Sadly, I’ve never seen him live though. His music hits me at my core and I love closing my eyes and holding a pillow tight and rocking back and forth to it while sitting. Sounds crazy but it’s so therapeutic. I’ve always been to scared to show that vulnerability at a concert. Now I’m in my 30s. If I get the chance to see him perform then I will make myself go. 100% confident I’ll cry like a baby at first because how amazing I imagine the energy would be

I was at this concert. Was in England for work. My girlfriend's sister at the time was also the tour manager for Tool at the time. She got us backstage passes for the show. Afterwards, Maynard was walkin down the hallway to the dressing rooms and ask those of us standing around where somewhere good to eat at was around there, and me being the idiotic drunken American blurted out "It's all boiled meat and smooshed starch around here, man." Maynard laughed and handed me a condom. I still have that condom to this day.

There's a touch of the "Theatre of the Absurd" to Maynard's stage presence. His physical reactions to the different melodies and tones of the music are so strange and beautiful there is no other front man like him. No one has that sense of theatricality to them anymore, no one is bold enough to allow themselves to go somewhere else within their own consciousness in front of a mob of complete strangers anymore.
