Dear Chris, as a kid many years ago, my Dad & Mom gave me a Zebco 202 reel and a 5-foot rod. My Zebco came with 8-lb test line and my little tackle box had just hooks, corks, and lead weights for bream fishing at our local fishing hole. A creek that emptied into a large catch basin when rain storms came visiting. Sometimes those flooded creek waters would bring us bream, catfish, turtles, and a bass or two if we were lucky. I did own one fishing lure, a Heddon River Runt , gray scale finish I think. We are talking some 60+years ago now, as I struggle to recall my childhood memories. My birthday is in May and not too far away from our hot Georgia summers. There was a bait and tackle shop called Chaney's and all the old classic baits, that are valuable to lure collectors today, was very common place then. Mr. Chaney had his "swap-a-lure board on the wall as you come in the door. Used lures, brought in and traded for a lure of close value on the board with a 50-cents charge. If you had no lure to trade you paid a dollar and picked what you wanted. In the 50's the kids in the neighborhood worked in the summer. I cut grass at 1-dollar for a large yard and 50-cents for a small yard. There was no such thing as Daddy & Momma handing out money to me or my brother. Unheard of at that time! I doubled as a shoe shine boy in a local barbershop, and worked all my Saturdays shining shoes and boots for the barbershop customers. A "spit shine" for 50-cents, shoes or boots, and tip appreciated. The reason I'm telling all this personal history was to introduce the reader to a lure that I purchased off Mr. Chaney's used lure board. With a half-dollar I had earned cutting a small yard. The used lure I purchased was my second bass lure, counting that River Runt, and I was thrilled to have a frog pattern Lazy Ike, the large #4 Model. Just quick as I could, I got my new Zebco 202 reel & rod and off to the fishing hole I went. I fished that big Ike with much enthusiasm, So at 9-years old, I started my fishing journey with the Lazy Ike and when I became a man in the 60's, the Lazy Ike would become a major player in my tacklebox. Age caught up with me and my fishing adventures ceased. Then I started lure collecting, hell I still had baits from back-in-the-day that other collectors wanted, and I fished them and collected many great fishing memories along the way. They are resting in those 5-tackle boxes that are full of lure memories. Sorry about the length Chris, I thought some of your readers might enjoy an old fisherman's stories of the past. David Abney

I get the vibe you’re putting down! The hardware store used to sell lures and fishing magazines, those glorious fishing magazines- Field and Stream, Fishing Facts, Sports Afield- would have painted action fishing scenes that really fired the imagination. Lures hung on the pegs like dangling jewels, all full of such promise. I was going to wallpaper my room with Fishing Facts cover art. Back when fishing was romantic, back when the world was small.

Having fished multiple s in different sizes and colors, kzitem.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 this is by far my favorite. One thing to be aware of is the sided willow blade. One side is silver and the other is the green/orange shown. This is not bad, just unconventional. In terms of fishing, I have found the lure works just fine without a tail like a craw or shad. That addition is up to you. Also, the hook part where you attach the swivel snap or tie the line is a problem on baits these days, since it's able to slide up and down. However this lure seems to be tight enough that that doesn't happen often, and you can solve it by putting a thin slice of medical tube over the hook before attaching the line. Like others have said, it's really magic on a good windy day.

I had the Banjo Minnow, Helicopter Lure, and of course Alex Langer's Flying Lure. And yes, I taped the half hour infomercial on a VHS tape in 1992. I agree that the Flying Lure really did seem to work in addition to the Banjo Minnow. These were the baits of my early teens fishing years. I'm surprised no one came up with a lure called the "Master Bait." Of course it would have to be a crank or jerk bait. (See what I did there?)

When you try fishing, the Banjo Minnow rig it weed less but rig it flat side up. It makes it glide slowly to the bottom like a dying minnow. When twitched off the bottom without any weight they catch fish.

I was about 10yrs old when I got the Helicopter Lure kit. It was great for fishing the heavy weeds of the local ponds. At the time, most people didn’t have anything that could be cast into the weeds and not get hung up. The helicopter lure caught me many a bass, including a personal best 6 pounder. So maybe gimmicky as all get up, but it caught fish. The Banjo Minnow was legit too. I mooched a few from my brother and always did well with them.

I caught plenty of fish with the flying lure. Crappy, bluegills and perch destroyed the smaller ones. Caught lots of large bass with the bigger lures. My favorite tactic was dragging the lure over lily pads and once the lure made it past the edge I would give the line slack and it would "fly" back under the pads, very effective.

My step grandfather gave me a pocket fisherman. It did work but it didn't fight fish very well. I've tried some of those as seen on TV lures in the past and wasn't impressed. I haven't bought that stuff in over 25 years. The flying lure was bought by a friend of mine. I have to say they worked, but the commercial hype was well overplayed. He switched back to throwing worms and plugs. I watch fishing shows on TV and pick up on what they're using. That's enough as seen on TV for me.

Talking to a another fisherman, after not catching anything under the floating pier throwing a 6" electric blue Flying Lure. Stranger: "You're not gonna catch anything with that lure". Me: "One more cast before I change it." Me: "Oh shit, I got one". 5 min later, 9lbs. 11 ozs. Stranger: "Here, let me get a picture of that." True story! I have a Big Bud and I still fish with it today. I use it as a top water bait in the morning, evening or night time. Steady slow retrieve seems to work best with the head just under water and the butt right at the surface. The blade on the tail makes a lot of noise and the hollow body resonates as the blade slaps the back of the lure. On lakes and ponds that have been over fished, where the fish are finicky, I break out the Big Bud. I've had this lure since the late 70's and I've caught some pretty good fish on it throughout the years. In mid-west and northern lakes, make sure you're using a steel leader as I have caught Northern Pike on this at night.

I showed up one morning for a tournament with two Dancin' Eels tied on a couple of my rods. I had other fishermen coming up and trying to buy them right up to take-off time. They were offering as much as $20 each (I paid about 2-4 bucks for them. I didn't sell them, but my partner and I did catch a bunch of fish on them that day. Unfortunately they were all 13 3/4" fish, in a lake with a 14" size limit. I'll bet my partner and I caught 50 or so. After that, I didn't think I ever caught another fish on them. The other stuff you mentioned, I either never heard of (Bud Frogs) or never fell for, or never caught a fish on. I tried and tried the Flying Lure. I just knew that would be great around boat docks. Nope. Not a bite. Not even from a Bluegill.

My grandmother used to buy my brother and I all the as seen on TV lure and we caught a pile of fish on the banjo, helicopter and flying lures. The banjo is a deadly, deadly lure. I actually copy the nose screw into a zoom super fluke and pound bass on them. That stupid flying lure my brother and I had one of our best young fishing days ever on them. We caught literally every species the pond had in it that day including bullhead.
I caught loads of bass on that flying lure. Cast to the edges of floating structure, and watch your line. It even works in saltwater. The helicopter lure is great for holes in floating structure. Cast it in, and let it sink. It's a good vertical jig. It twists the line a little, when fished on surface. Just let it untwist before your next cast. Like in it's advertisement.

The original Banjo minnow's were Very flexible, without "joints" molded-in. When properly rigged, the action is amazing. It can, and does, catch bottom oriented fish in clear water.

Those are some crazy lures. The history is pretty enjoyable. Thanks for sharing!

There's actually a lot of soft plastics now (especially out of Japan) that are the same concept as the flying, basically skirted grubs or solid body tubes whichever way you want to look at it.

For Fathers day, the kids got me the 'Banjo Minnows'. Of course I took it in stride. One day I was bank fishing because of expected heavy storms coming. Just as they approached, I decided to try them, starting with the white ones. Let me tell you, I started to hook 3 and 4 pounders left and right as the storm system got closer! They have a weird 'darting action' if you fish them quick, just under the surface. Needless to say I ordered more, they worked great!

Great video! I watched the entire video just to see where the Banjo Minnow came in. I remember watching Three's Company reruns and seeing that infomercial. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

Banjo could have been #1 since it’s probably the most effective lure in the list, but for overall impact, I had to go with Flying Lure.

I actually caught my previous PB 21 1/2in 6lbs.7 oz. on an old flying lure I found in the bottom of my dad's tackle box. And in my opinion the banjo minnow was by far the biggest gimic I have never gotten so much as bite.

Banjo minnow and flying lure worked really well. My buddy’s pb bass was on flying lure, 8.5lbs.
