there was a time in a Pre-Dylan world when some people had a job as songwriter and some people had a job as singer (a song interpreter) - this is the history of Popular Music from before Rudy Vallee through Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley - nearly everything they recorded was "cover songs" either already established or written specifically for them.

The Animals learned "House Of The Rising Sun" from Bob Dylan's 1962 self-titled debut album (they also covered the track "Baby Let Me Follow You Down.) Dylan learned it from Joan Baez, who had recorded it on her 1960 self-titled debut album. incidentally, the song would be featured on the US version of The Animals' 1964 self-titled debut album.

For non-hair metal fans, "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" may be more familiar. But "Rock Me" is way better. Another great Springsteen cover by them is "Spirits in the Night" it's almost as good.

Two of Nazareth's biggest songs were covers: "Love Hurts" and Joni Mitchell's "This Flight Tonight." Joni was so amused that a hard rock band did one of her songs that when she played it live, she took to introducing like this "This is a Nazareth song." Also not a hit or anything but check out Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" via Celtic Frost.

Because The Night was written by Springsteen and Smith together. However, you could use that song for the 10,000 Maniacs because that was their only hit and the only song for which they're known and I don't think it was ever a hit for Patti.
