@@taramcdonough3599 There's a trick to use with pasta and rice that helps when using it to stretch meals if you or a family member are diabetic. Pasta and rice are full of carbs and can raise your blood sugar too high. But there is a way to turn them into resistant carbs which are metabolized more slowly, and don't have such a negative impact on your blood sugar. All you have to do is: 1. Don't over cook them. Overcooking unlocks more of the starch, making it turn to sugar in your digestive tract much quicker than al dente pasta or rice. 2. Whole Wheat pastas and brown rice are naturally more resistant, and have a lower impact on your sugar levels than the refined white versions. Especially when you follow the THIRD trick. 3. Don't use it right after cooking, refrigerate them completely first. This turns them into resistant carbs, and the interesting and useful part is that, once they have been refrigerated, that LOCKS them in as resistant carbs. Even if you reheat them, they're STILL resistant carbs. Just be sure to keep them in WATER in the fridge to keep them from sticking together. A quick plunge back into boiling water will quickly reheat them for use in hot dishes, or you can use them cold in pasta salads. It's best to use long grain rice reheated though, because when it's cold the starches crystalize and make the grains hard, and unpleasant to chew. That's why you should never use it to make a cold dish like rice pudding, use short grain (sticky) rice instead for cold applications.

I live in a one bedroom apartment in Chicago,IL. I'm blessed with 4 closets, a walkin, a coat closet-7shelf linen, a wall to wall clothes closet, and a 3 shelf pantry in the kitchen. I was raised to save as you spend. I shop for sale items and always add a few extras. I was in a training program for seniors in 2020. They shut down. I had no reason to run out to the stores. I also was able to help a lot of folks in my hi-rise building. God bless us to be a blessing.

I recently had some of the instant coffee(decaf) at a friends home. She had made a whole pot, and I could not believe how good it was. It had a slight caramel flavor, which was delicious! Dear Mary, I live in Germany and the majority of prices approximately translate to the Euro prices at our Aldi stores, some even less. But we too keep noticing rapid price jumps in the last year and especially last months, aswell as shortages, the most current one being sunflower oil which doubled in price compared to 2021. A lot of people are concerned about making meets end these days and about further inflation. Thanks for engaging in this very dark topic of crisis preparation/survival with light heartedness and practicality. I love your content and you, you're light tower in the world. Sweet greetings from Germany. Julia

Aldi is my favorite place for backup food. My husband and I were both sick back in February. It’s just us in the house. Those products strive to be clean and they're free from chemicals and other questionable substances that are commonly used in food manufacturing. I've been shopping at ALDI for decades. It was about 8 or 9 years ago that ALDI switched over and began to offer a line of clean, organic products. Hi mlMary! This is my first time finding your channel. Aldi is definitely known for private label brands so most of the brands you see probably won't be familiar with. You are correct that Simply Nature is their own and house organic brand. They also have a gluten-free line as well as some other product lines that they feature. They detail these on their website if you're interested in further information. Because Aldi is a German company, they do tend to have a good selection of chocolates, cheeses and wines. Just in case you aren't familiar. Particularly around Christmas time they tend to stock a lot of wonderful chocolates so keep that in mind. Glad you enjoyed and found so many great bargains at Aldi. I would definitely keep it as an option for your shopping between it and Walmart they are both pretty competitive.

I love how you combine bargain shopping, care for the environment and eating healthy. Our Aldi in the Netherlands has a completely different range of products and living near the German border I can also go to Germany - they have two different Aldi chains (Aldi Nord and Aldi Sud) and also these have different products from ours. All do have the Moser Roth chocolate. The windmill cookies are traditional Dutch cookies called "speculaas" and it contains a spice mix of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, coriander, anise, ginger and cardamom. I still find this very strange to find in cookies - especially since we hardly use those spices traditionally.

Definitely show us how you make "rice-aroni". I love the Smuckers 2 lb glass jars of peanut butter. I keep all the jars, as they have an incredible seal. I store all kinds of dried food in them.

Another great video, Mary. I found the dark sour cherries, reduced, at one of my local Aldis for $2.19 a jar. I got 2 and will use it to make a pie. I mix the juice with instant clear jel and some sugar for my pie. BUT, my Aldis in PA charged $2.99 for the same pound of frozen Turkey 😞😞😞

I get their white, enriched rice usually for under $5 for 10 lbs. I have to feed my dogs rice because of health problems, so I cook a large batch twice a week and then add unsalted vegetables and beans to half their commercial dog food to reduce the fats they are eating. (One of the dogs had a liver infection and could not digest fats and oils. Found out that my other dog is a breed that can have liver problems also). I had to laugh when you said you got 2 cans of mushrooms - I buy them 2 Flats a time because I use them almost everyday. Aldi's also have a great tomato paste - it has 100 MG salt in the entire can.

What a great video, Ms. Mary! I've been shopping at Aldi for almost 20 years. I used to drive about 70 miles once a month with my two little boys (now grown men) in tow to stock up. One thing I didn't see in your video that I've been buying forever is canned PINEAPPLE. Theirs has always been canned in juice, is over a pound, and still less than $1 when I checked last week. They've only recently started carrying the other fruits packed in juice and I haven't seen the fruit cocktail here in Oklahoma but I'll be looking more closely next time I go.

It is bizarre that ALDI never opened a store in Canada since they carry a lot of Canadian-made products (as well as products from Europe). Several bakery items, including bread and cookies, are made in Canada. Their pet food is made in Canada too. My cat loves ALDI's canned cat food, and I love it too since it's high quality and about half the price. Kitty eats well too on the cheap. 🐈
