"Was perfected and expanded upon", then. Jrpgs are defined by the characteristics they borrowed from Ultima 3 but altered to appeal to Japanese sensibilities, particularly in included themes and art style, and even in jrpgs that deviated from the standard formula, there is still a time-based component to the battles that doesn't exist in arpgs or wrpgs because it doesn't remove the turn-based component. And until very recently, there was not a notable catalogue of western rpgs that possessed any of these characteristics. They were extreme outliers. Japan saw the potential and made it central to their video games. Western companies did not.

Rob is right, there are defintely enough specific tropes associated with the term "JRPG" that it has become a genre unto itself. Having the term rigidly refer to as 'an RPG made in japan' seems so pointless now, since Japan has put out western style RPGs and the west has put out Japanese style RPGs, what would be the point? If that's literally all it means then just say RPG.
@waveplay3978
4 жыл бұрын
yup this one gets it. It may have original meant RPG made in Japan, but at that time those games were stylistically so different from Western games that the term became increasingly associated with the stylistic conventions (anime aesthetic and tropes, linear narratives as opposed to focus on maximizing choice & consequence), outgrowing the geographical distinction. Dark Souls is the PERFECT example of how this rigid definition is outdated now.

All these things add a big chunk to their workload and editing, but make such a massive difference to the final product. It makes a good video into a great one. I agree with Rob. There’s a difference between a JRPG and RPG outside of the Japan designation. Dark Souls is not a JRPG.

All these entries are a must play! I played almost all of them (8 out of 10) except Valkyrie Chronicles & Monster Hunter. I also played hella lot of JRPG games. And there are some who deserve a place here tbh such as Falcom's games (Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana & The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel).

2 things 1. Glad Persona 5 Royal got the love it did as it's my favorite jrpg ever alongside base P5. 2. On to my favorite JRPG series Kingdom Hearts. Ya can't say KH3 is a "sendoff" when we've been told for countless years that after 3 is the start if a new saga that will still star Sora. Now it's just a matter of how are we getting him back.

Rob was totally correct. JRPG is a sub-genre, not a description of national origin. No-one says "I'm off to play a Canadian platformer". We don't just obsessively note the national origin of everything. The term arose purely because it corresponded to a distinctive style.

Thx Rob without you and your Friday lists I wouldn't heard about those games and thx for this list and those recomendations. PS. I agree about Dark souls. If you want JRPG like Dark Souls play Code Vein

That zoom call was incredibly nostalgic; I know I've been in more than one spirited discussion on what constitutes a "JRPG." As a recent inductee to the world of Falcom games, I'm also going to echo some of the other folks here and call out some of the games that would have made MY list: Trails of Cold Steel, Ys, and Tokyo Xanadu are exceptional RPGs and if anyone's looking for some other options, I would wholeheartedly encourage those folks to take a look.

My trick to get rid of this feeling is to get the platinum. I played the original Persona 5 3 times to get the trophies, got REALLY burnt out doing that, after this you will like other games again. I hopefully will play P5: royal in the future, but I can't play it now, still burnt and can't play any Persona game.

I was in the middle of playing through dq11 on switch, spent 80+ hours And then final fantasy 7 remake came out... ... The 5 song track list really dawns on you how it really hurts the game, even if it's now symphonic. The story's great but man... A combat system you go auto through Really puts that whole, Total fun = number of decisions / total time Into perspective Ugh, gushing not about ff7r, but something unconventional to the topic, ys8 (something people here are complaining wasn't on the list) Maan, for a given battle, you got the rock paper scissors aspect, then the character switching, then the positional stuffs of arpg's... Not mentioning abilities and mp, that's already, like, a few choices more than selecting auto-battle... I mean, I'd put it over DQ11... At least the Yakuza isn't controlling Ys's ost like what happened with dragon quest

Never been a big JRPG fan, so that's gotta be why I'd never heard of a game that looks like it's basically all my favourite Ghibli movies rolled into one with an added combat system. Now my mind is blown and I know exactly what I'll be doing for the rest of the month of May! Thanks!

I am so unbelievably happy that Valkyria chronicles 4 and Berseria were both on this list. Nier:Automata is a masterpiece, Persona in general is amazing, and I’m hoping to change my stance on final fantasy soon with the remake, but for me valkyria chronicles has always had a special place in my heart(we don’t talk about revolution) and ever since first playing berseria, i knew this one was different. Berseria is by far my favorite game of all time :3

I'm with you, Rob. JRPG isn't as simple as being an RPG created in Japan. By that reasoning, any game that you play the role of a character would technically be a role playing game itself.

@@mazokuwolf1279 If you really want to understand the entire plot of the Legend of Heroes series, and this is probably why they didn't include it on this list, you're best bet is to get the games on Trails in the Sky, which is a trilogy, on PC, play them, then find the Crossbell games with fan translations and play them, then play Trails of Cold Steel 1-3, while waiting for 4 to come out this fall. It's a lot of games to play and the Cold Steel series in particular is long, but it's well worth it.

I didn’t know trials of mana was seikendensetsu 3, so when i downloaded and played the demo, i cried for joy. SoM was considered my second favorite game of all time right behind chrono trigger. I finally realised i can’t say of all time for any game other than chrono trigger. I classsify them by genre now, but rpg is the only genre i ever actually think about in terms of which are my favorite.

I have to agree with Rob on this one, Dark souls is not a Jrpg in the sense we usually talk about that genre. Its about the style and the tropes not where it was made. Many games are labelled as rpg despite not really being one anyway, the same applies to jrpg, it is a jrpg because it has the elements of one, it doesnt have to be literally a jrpg.
@stevehernandez6430

I agree w/ Rob about the definition of a JRPG. As a genre, it picks out a specific kind of game, often with a specific kind of story. Doesn't matter if it's made in Japan or not.

Rob is entirely correct. JRPG is a style not a country of origin its style. You can get western style RPGs made in Japan. If there is an Italian restaurant in Canada it's still an Italian restaurant base in the countries origin

It is a shame that Jrpgs somewhat died in the west thanks to the grim dark action RPGs. As to the argument, Jrpgs are a particular style of rpg, while you have action RPGs like the Souls or Dragon Age series, strategy rpgs such as FFT, Ogre Battle Tactics, Vandel Hearts, you name it. I've been a RPG connoisseur since the release of FF2 in the States, 4 in Japan. The storytelling and battle systems is what makes it a Jrpg. Take Secret of Mana, made in Japan, but an action rpg, same as Secret of Evermore, made in the States, still made by Square, pre Enix merger, but an action rpg. Monster Hunter on this list is definitely not a JRPG!!! Although it is one of the most popular series in Japan, it doesn't fit my personal criteria. Nier Automata and even Nier aren't as well. As I said in the beginning, it is a shame the Jrpg has died out except a few gems. Some of these games on the list are just on this list because they were made in Japan, despite being action, strategy, etc. You might as well include the Souls series then.
