My list: 10: Mike McCready: One of the main creative forces behind Pearl Jam. He took what Hendrix did and elevated it to a more atmospheric and somewhat uncomfortable feel, which really worked for many musicians and bands in the 90's. 9: Jason Becker: I would go as far as to say that Jason revolutionized what we see as Prog Metal today. This because he took what made Yngwie Malmsteen good and put his own spin on it. Neoclassical Metal was bent at the knee every time Jason picked up a guitar. What makes things more impressive now is that he's still composing great music even though ALS took most of his bodily functions. 8: Larry LaLonde: This is a somewhat controversial pick on my part because if you listen to his guitar work, especially on Sailing The Seas Of Cheese, it sounds like garbage. But the beauty of his playing is that it fits Primus so fucking well. Because it fits Primus well, there tends to be some really intriguing and well written pieces, like the riffs from Too Many Puppies, Lacquer Head's Chorus riff and solos like in Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. 7: Kim Thayil: All i have to say about Kim is the solo from Black Hole Sun 6: Ichika Nito: While not what you would typically expect out of a guitarist, Ichika can move his fucking hands like no one else. Half the time, you can't comprehend what he's playing, so it looks like he's playing some random bullshit and it makes you think that everything was pre recorded. 5: Buckethead: I feel like Jordan and Soothsayer are the only explanations needed for this man. 4: Marty Friedman: While Megadeth may be what Marty was best known for, he was also once a Neoclassical shredder. Him and Jason Becker were in Cacophony together, and that band is what really set him and Jason apart from their peers. Not to mention that during his time in Megadeth, Marty had played some of the bands most iconic solos. Does Tornado Of Souls or Hangar 18 ring a bell? 3: John Petrucci: John seems like the typical graduate from Berklee who became a Prog musician that only follows the scales. But him and everyone else who's ever been in Dream Theater (except Derek Sherinian) have been very strong songwriters. Everyone has been able to make DT sounds like a well balanced mix between radio friendly Metal and Prog. 2: Jerry Cantrell: There's no saying what would have become of Grunge had Alice In Chains not formed and released Facelift in 1990, but them and Mother Love Bone helped lead the grunge movement. With the release of Facelift, Jerry showed how well of a riff writer he is, and he can still shred. Some people have even taken to calling him the Riff God. 1: Eddie Van Halen: Oh man, where do i start with Eddie? I guess i should keep it short and sweet, and say that without Eddie or Van Halen, most guitarists nowadays probably wouldn't be picking the instrument up. Not to mention he had the strongest influence on Rock + Metal guitarists in the 80's/90's. Dimebag, Jerry Cantrell, probably most of the guys from the Hair Metal era. Eddie's presence in music is undeniable, and that's why he earns my #1 spot.

Dimebag is here, so why isn't EVH? He pretty much was the one who created the the modern shred style in metal and rock, he even started a new revolution of guitar designs never seen before. There's no 80s rock and metal without EVH, some might argue he's done more for guitar itself than Jimi Hendrix.

As someone who thinks dimebag is the greatest heavy metal guitar player ever, EVH should be on this list and should be in the top 3. The hendrix of hard rock and metal in terms of influence

I feel like this list is genre crossing, mustaine, dimebag, tony are considered metal guitarists and not rock, plus randy roads writing style is what mostly all of the other guitarists built off of that’s on this list excluding page, tony, and Jimmy. If it were just rock then halen would be on this list. It’s like putting Lars on the rock list with Neil peart

Where's Chuck Schuldiner. So many of these lists always overlook him, and Synyster Gates is the most overrated Guitarist I ever seen. He's not that great and his band Avenged Sevenfold belongs in a toilet bowl

Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and David Gilmour wouldn't be there without Jimmy Page? Jimmy Page had absolutely nothing to do with any of them becoming famous. Led Zeppelin only had one album out in the 60's, 1969's self-titled debut; by this time, Jimi Hendrix had moved onto the Band of Gypsies from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and would die the following year. Page was a well-known English session guitarist and one-time member of the Yardbirds, but he wasn't even famous until the late stages of Jimi Hendrix' career and life. "Clapton is God" was already a legendary graffiti. Pink Floyd were ditching Syd Barrett who made _them_ famous and hiring David Gilmour and making him famous. Also, how do you have Mark Tremonti and no Eddie Van Halen?

I'm fine with Dave being on the list, but not having Marty on the list when Slash is on here is just a Travesty. No disrespect to Slash, but Friedman is way better than him and even Dave admitted that Friedman was a better player than him. Also, James Hetfield deserves to be on the list. He's arguably the best rhythm guitar player in metal, and I'd also add Chuck Schuldiner on here and EVH.
