@faultroy Saving a dog in need is just as good as any breeder with can be just as corrupt, most shelters in my area do not require hundreds of dollars in fact I got my cat for 30$ and would you rather have that cute dog euthanized or adopted most shelters that I know of are full, they can't afford to have this many dogs with is most likely why your shelter has higher adoption fees they still take care of as many as they can but they can't save every dog, sure shelters aren't perfect but they try their best!

Our mutt was a Shelter Puppy, so we had the best of both worlds. Fluke was a black and tan Lab/Rottie mix who grew into my overall favorite dog. He was a large breed and developed hip problems late in life, which is often common with dogs his size (85 lbs). Fluke would greet you with a smile (and a tail wag), which might be misinterpreted by humans who did not know him. He was not a bit aggressive towards strangers, but would bark when cars pulled into the driveway as a way of announcing their arrival. Needless to say, we had no problems with theft at our rural SC home. Fluke lived 16 years and I miss him dearly! I am currently looking for an adult rescue dog to compliment our family.

@@cuentagooglegratis908 Lots of reasons to DNA test a dog. Humans have family history/traits to guess what illnesses we are more susceptible to. But if you get a rescue their genetic history is unknown. Yeah you could guess on what kind of mix breed it is or wait till an illness comes up. But if you really want to know than DNA test is the way to go. Also you can see if your guess is right on what mix it is. But no matter what the result of the test is, nothing can replace the love of a 70lbs monster hoping in your bed while you are asleep and proceeds to sleep on your foot till it is numb.(happens to me every few days)

Shelter or rescue are the least expensive. My last three dogs have all been rescues and they are all purebred coonhounds. A Redtick, a Plott and my current Walker. The adoption fees have run $200-$250. I didn't keep track of the vet bills but the dogs were very healthy. There is one mutt that is ridiculously expensive. A doodle. I rescued my Mini German Spitz approx three years ago. when previous owner died. I was told he was six years, old. Well, he was likely at least eight at the time, unneutered, kept outside and used for breeding. He is totally blind due to a genetic issue. His teeth were in terrible shape, six were abscessed and he also had a benign oral tumour. Taking into account, neutering, vaccinations, and three extensive dental surgeries to remove all his teeth and the tumour came back the first time it was removed. Total cost so far, is $6,000.00. He is now at least twelve and very spoiled. The longevity of his breed is 14-16 years. He is very well fed, and cared for, so hopefully he'll live a lot longer, Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a free dog could cost this much, and that doesn't include trips to the groomer. I purchased equipment to do that myself now, because even with Senior Discounts that is still exepensive. Everyone thinks he's adorable!

Nice summary. I like the quick breakdown of the individual breeds. I recently processed a study indicating annual cost between 1500 and 3200 $ depending on breed, size and location we live. While I am fully convinced a dog is worth every cent, it is also very important to understand the costs involved. One example is health insurance. They often exclude breed specific diseases from the policy. This could lead to surprises later on in life. I would emphasise to pay special attention on this point. 🙂

I got my first rat terrier for free, when 5 previous owners couldn't manage to deal with his activity level (he was just under a year old when I got him.) He quickly became the constant companion for my oldest daughter. My second rat terrier was also free (she obviously was being used as a squirrel dog, and didn't come when called, so was abandoned, and followed my sister home.) My brother in law originally thought she would be a good lap dog. WRONG! A 3 year old hunting terrier is much more active than a lap dog. So I ended up with her in about a week and a half. I've had her 11 years, and she's only cost "basic maintenance." At 14 years old, she is finally starting to be a lap dog. 😁

How about a stray mutt that chose the car we had on front of our car to have their babies, then when she saw one of them going away said "hell no" and made him come back by fighting the cats in the house that was going to be his forever home. 2x1 and zero initial spending. The neutering of her was done by a government campaign so free, they have never been seriously ill so little medical cost, we basically just feed them and they're good to go. That's the jackpot. Oh and did I mention they show an special kind of affection towards us, as if they know we changed their lives and *that* can't be purchased.
@arevee9429

By far, the biggest cost is vet bills and those quoted in this video are very low. Cost of purchase, by comparison, fore even an expensive dog, is insignificant. And who would take a Jack Russell in for grooming with the possible exception of a nail trim? In the urban northwest, the cost of shelter or rescue dogs can be on the order of 300 - 500. Reasonable, considering the cost the shelter spends for housing and medical car.

A rescue from a shelter is certainly worth consideration when you want a buddy on a budget. Of course, you have to consider the potential of having a dog with hereditary health and temperament problems. When considering a pure-bred pet, you should remember that the breeder has costs related to genetic and orthopedic screening, and a bargain price probably means that the breeder scrimped somewhere along the way. If you decide on a pure-bred, be sure to visit the kennel and meet the parent dogs. Oh, and my Norwegian Elkhound gets a high-quality kibble that I can find on eBay around a dollar a pound, and gets two cups a day for the fifty-pound dog.

That dog will see you as a superhero! I know I've done it four times now. They know what crappy living is all about and they really appreciate a good secure home. I type this with a previously abused lab/ boxer cross passed out on his back, snoring, next to me in bed! It can be rough at first but it's great. Work with the folks at the shelter, they will help you pick the right dog for you.

Lucy the Puppy lover why are you buying 3 at once you need to have experience with one dog before you buy 3 dogs

Yeah... I agree. Since they will ALLL need lots of attention in the first year of life, that's a lot of work.

Adopting is always #1. I have adopted dogs that .y vet said were likely pure breeds. I have only regretted once when I adopted a poodle wigh parvo. Spent a lot of money and she died.
