Love Eagle Rare. Woodford is solid - have you every tried it side by side with Old Forester? You may be surprised. They have the same mash bill. Aged close to the same amount of time. And half of what becomes Woodford actually comes from the Old Forester distillery (column stills), with the other half coming from Woodford's pot stills (if memory serves).

I like just about everything on this list except Bulleit. I like Bulliet Rye but I don't like Bulliet Bourbon. My replacement for Bulliet for an everyday budget bourbon would be Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage. Even though I live way out in B.F.E.it's easily available and runs between $25 and $30 a bottle, which is what I look for in a budget bourbon.

I’ve drank bourbon plenty of times in my life, but just to drink. I’ve never sat with one trying to pick out the various notes. So with a bit of curiosity I picked up a bottle of the Michter’s because how you guys ranted and raved over it. I sniffed, sipped, sniffed, sipped. Turns out I’m not very good at it. The only notes I could distinctly pick up were cream, caramel, and vanilla, with a little oak. One bottle later and my wife is bailing me out of jail for allegedly getting into a fist fight with my neighbor’s inflatable Santa. I’m no quitter. Got another bottle ready to go. Any advice?

Great channel, keep it coming guys. The 1st time I drank Eagle Rare I thought it was a fine sipping rum it’s so delicately sweet, but as you say, not so much it defies bourbon. That’s not to say all fine rum is sweet, some are clean and sharp and more like cognac. In my opinion, rums vary the most of any spirit in flavor and profile, but that’s a different story. I got 4 bottles of Eagle Rare from a famous outlet store for $27 per and thought I’d won the lottery! The Four Roses is wonderful and stepping up to the single barrel version is worth it, but I’ve seen the bottle you reviewed for under $30 and that’s all one can ask for. Elijah Craig barrel strength is just as you described and might offer every thing a bourbon can be without favoring one flavor profile over another. Maker’s is just boring for me and over marketed, but to each their own. Buffalo Trace is of course, classic. Of them all, Four Roses (more so the single barrel version) is best overall, Buffalo Trace, then Elijah. It’s difficult to rank Eagle Rare because it defies bourbon a bit (I know I said it didn’t, oops) and it is dangerously delicious. it is the absolute smoothest sipping, digestif candy bourbon that I often enjoy in replacement of dessert. I like drinking my dessert. Cheers!

Oh God, $41-42 for Buffalo Trace? It’s pretty much my favorite bourbon but that’s too much! It’s about $25-27 for me in California. Reminds me of a liquor store in Jackson, Wyoming. Stopped in to see if I could find a whiskey from this one Montana distillery I visited earlier in the trip. Sure enough they had it-for like $60! I got it for WAY less at the distillery IIRC. Lo and behold I look around the aisle and they had Jim Beam for about $20+, Jack Daniels for about $40, etc. everything was marked up double price essentially.

Tastes like popcorn!" amid siblings hacking and gagging, her response was, "You're not supposed to like it!" Apparently Wild Turkey was her go to throughout the 80's--she was a logger/bartender/restauranteer. It's all I drank for the last decade. Now I'm branching out and trying the whiskey world, and I love finding content to steer me in one direction or another. Because risk aversion. ;P

Eagle Rare is allocated in my area and I don’t even attempt to find it. That is one that I have been wanting to try for a few years now. I was a manager at a drug store that sold liquor, and we would receive our liquor shipments at 5am on Friday’s…there would be bourbon-heads setting up lawn chairs in winter coats with thermoses full of coffee at 3am in the middle of February waiting for us to open at 7am. By 7:05am, we would be completely out of any kind of bourbon or scotch that was allocated or popular. They would always be there waiting, at 3am, even if there was a foot of snow on the ground. Bless their hearts.

Also, I don't know what the upper-limit is for price, but the Knob Creek, Small Batch (at 50%) is a Buffalo Slayer! For me, it's a very well-rounded bourbon, with a rich, caramel, dark sugar, clove taste that's very robust. As for the nose, it's like this sweet, earthy, loamy hole I just want to fall into. With a bit of water, it, really, does open up. Great review, guys. Thanks!

The basic Elijah Craig 94 is the budget bourbon of choice at my house, if you enjoy it and want to splurge a bit their barrel proof releases tend to be excellent. I have a few examples ranging from and 118 proof up to a 136.6 example and they are excellent. I'm also a big fan of the Four Roses Small Batch they featured, and likewise their single barrel and barrel proof releases. The McKenna, Eagle Rare, and often Buffalo Trace are unobtainium here in PA most of the time, I have pretty much everything else on their list and you really can't go disastrously wrong with any of them, it will just come down to your personal preference.

ayup. 3 of these aren't available here really. Only two are in the $30 USD range after converting to AUD. I won't complain about my $55 ($39USD) Buffalo Trace, but I won't be looking for $84 ($60US) Eagle Rare. That price bracket is for my Laphroaig.

I'm sure it's $100 somewhere and $20 somewhere. These things are pretty subjective, but generally for most people it won't be that expensive.

Great video. I started drinking Buffalo trace about three years ago. It had been my go to bourbon for a couple of years. Now my go to is Russell's 10 year. Haven't had any of the other Bourbons on that list but I think I got to go out and get another bottle of buffalo trace. I've tried half a dozen or so Bourbons. Rowan's creek. Noah's mill, deckles eight year bourbon, and I was lucky enough to score a bottle of old Rip van Winkle on Christmas Eve last year. Just got a bottle of four roses smallbatch today. I'll be checking you guys out thank you.

Fun vid. Like a lot of folks, I'd say some of these bourbons would be in the mid/high price category. But, I can def usually get a good price on Makers, Buffalo Trace, and Wild Turkey 101. But I gotta be honest, my ultra-budget bourbons are Evan Williams and Old Grand Dad.

I'm just watching this video now, but I'd like to follow up on Daniel's Pu Erh description. Pu Erh is a fermented tea. It's often left to age for 10 or more years. Common tasting notes for pu Erh are Mushroom, deciduous forest, and other funky savory notes. The brewing method Daniel was describing was gong fu brewing. It's comparable to espresso versus coffee. Small, concentrated shots of tea.

I'm kind of in the early stages of appreciating liquors for the subtleties and enjoy them for the craft of what each distiller brings. At this early stage I use a reference spirit, usually a Jack Daniels or Jim Beam. They always seem consistent so you'll know your starting point, a cheap experiment is to try a Jim Beam, then follow up with Buffalo Trace, very very contrasting.

Realitvely new to the Whisky & Bourbons, last 5 years or so... gotta say, 8 out of the 10 listed I have tried and enjoyed (and what's this, Evan Williams in my glass as I'm watching this? Whoa!), and the other two I' seen on my local shelves. I'm going to have to watch more of your shenanagins... I mean reviews.

Even within a city (I live up in Boston) I’ve found prices on bourbons and scotch varies wildly. If I’m buying a bottle downtown it will be marked up by 20%, but if I go to a random hole in the wall corner store / liquor store you might be able to get the same thing for maybe 30% lower than the standard price. I’ve gotten Bullet Rye up here for between 50 and as low as 20 dollars- some tiny little out of the way liquor stores don’t know how to price it because it isn’t popular or hip in that area or just because they need to get rid of product overhead before the new shipment comes in. I’d strongly recommend, for whiskey, bourbon, and scotch to check out your local corner store liquor store as opposed to online or big box chain stores- there are loads of deals on good quality for low prices

I kind of miss that. In California, I could find a bottle of X for $55 at one place, and then some other place would have it for $33. I recently moved to Maine, and here, the state mandates the price on all spirits *everywhere* If a bottle of Laphroaig 10 is $52, then every single store in the entire state has it for $52. When it goes on sale for $47.99, then it goes on sale for $47.99 at every single store in the state. There are pros and cons to this system, but one good thing is that you needn't hunt around looking for a deal on a bottle. Whisk(e)y communism.

@@awkwardme5375 Oh yup, definitely the case with buying booze in Maine, I’ve actually been driving up to NH for a while now to go booze hunting in comparison to some places in MA. However, with all the people that have moved out of MA and up to southern NH the past three years even their prices have started to shoot up of recent. If you want small town prices instead of city prices you need to go north of Laconia or so. Old timey NH was my favorite place for booze hunting.
