After hearing these dark origins, it makes me glad that Disney changed them to be more lighter and good for kids. Not to mention have them all have good and happy endings. Hearing about the beauty and the beast cousins story makes me think of Game of Thrones with Jaime and Cersie being brother and sister and have a relationship, and Jon and Daenerys having a relationship when they are said to be aunt and nephew.

Well the beauty and the beast movie actually makes sense. Because in the past, royalties actually marries their cousins and some sister or brother for "pure blood". Thats why some of them had those incest born illnesses or body deformities. And you wont think that it still happens till this day. Well it still does, but its uncommon.

That Sleeping Beauty one has me shook! I mean, supposedly, fairytales were a way of teaching life lessons and morals to kids...what's the moral of the one for Sleeping Beauty?!?
@lotusquinn101
Жыл бұрын
Going with the reasoning [of underlying moral/ lesson to be learned] in the older darker fairy tale versions...... i would guess that might somehow relate to how arranged marriages were more common "back in the day" ? (and the bride was typically much younger than the groom) & therefore much more naive about how to "be a wife" 😉😉🛌... but that 'everything will work out' once you have kids (since the bride likely helped raise her younger siblings prior to the arranged marriage- so childcare would be something she would be familiar with) ... But i'm just guessing that that's the underlying moral/ lesson that [the older/ darker version] was meant to teach/ insinuate? 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
@Vega921
5 ай бұрын
Given that it can be tracked at least to the 1300s, I would say the moral is likely “don’t anger fairies/godly deities lest they curse your children”. I totally agree that modern sleeping beauty probably has the least to offer children in the way morals of the classic princesses.

Cousin marriage is not a problem as long as it isn’t continued generation after generation. It is entirely acceptable in many cultures, especially among the upper classes who do not want to share their wealth and status with the peons. It is just elitist, not dark.

And how people used to argue with me about Sleeping Beauty getting pregnant in the older versions... The one I'm most familiar with has the prince being single and possessing a half-ogre (step?) mother. After becoming king and going off to war, his mother, who never liked her new daughter in law, gets a taste for young flesh. She wants the youngest child, then the elder, then their mother. The king arrives as she's supposedly dining on filet of princess; he's told what's been going on, has her executed, and only then is reunited with his family. No idea where that one originated, but you can see the Italian roots.
