@Silkendrum

Except that Hannah Montana was simply the stage name of a real person. If you want to include her, you'd have to also include Lady Gaga, the stage persona of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. Same thing.
@maaarrccoo
7 жыл бұрын
Silkendrum Not really, Hannah Montana was a fictional character created by Disney. Miley wasn't even signed as an artist when the first Hannah Montana soundtrack was released; she released her debut under the name Miley Cyrus, which was actually her stage name given that her real name was Destiny Cyrus. Hannah Montana's music/likeness belongs to Disney. Lady Gaga is just a name Stefani made up to release her mainstream music under.
@Silkendrum
7 жыл бұрын
gray Ok, I see your point regarding Montana - but my point is that there was at least a physical human connected to the character, and any 11-year-old during her heyday could identify her. Most of the others on the video list never had ANY physical human body at all. I say "most", because I don't understand why Tony Clifton was on the list. There was a physical human connected, but we were simply never quite sure who it was under the makeup. For the rest, there was never any person - just the name and the myth.

Simon, have you ever heard the legend of Bob Cringley? Bob, or Robert, was a fictional employee that was created by a Silicon Valley business in the 1980s to be used as a scapegoat. When a bad business decision or outcome happened, the fault was always blamed on Robert's poor judgement. His use as a fictional whipping boy continued for many years, and some smaller technical firms often still employ Robert, merely as a name to blame their mistakes on. A poor employee, who in truth does not exist, except on their HR records.

Pierre Bressau... back in the 1990s, the magazine "Discover" took a bunch of art from various animals, including an ape and an elephant, as I recall, to various art critics without telling them the provenance. They generally oooohed and ahhhhhed about it, and Discover used it to suggest that it showed that animals were capable of art, just as humans were. It never seemed to occur to them that it said more about the state of Modern Art than it did about the artistic talents of animals. :-/

Travis Lee Arthur and his crew came on a merchant ship from the Mediterranean about 60a.d. they said the original knights were middle eastern looking. Arthur married the pagan leader which had a thing for Lancelot. All was cool tho as it was a political marriage ending in our Christmas being on the winter solstice etc. Also Arthur and his men were of a new Judeo-Christian belief. Which was only popular for one generation.

The Legend of Arthut spurs from the King the rules Britania after the Romans abandoned it. The Son of Markus Constantine was said to be the first king that ruled, and that the son or grandson was the supposed King of Legend. I know something famous that never existed. So it's not a famous person, but more a poetry book. Loads of Dean Koontz's older books contained excerpts in the beginning from "The Book of Counted Sorrows" and they were all really good. But in reality, there was no such book, Dean Koontz wrote the excerpts himself. And after being asked about it all the time, he finally compiled them all into a book and had a limited release for The Book of Counted Sorrows. He had temporarily sold them on his site. I unfortunately don't own a copy T_T I would love to though. I'm not a poetry fan normally but I love Dean Koontz's sense of humor and his Book of Counted Sorrows excerpts are really good.

There was a completely fictional artist named Nat Tate invented a few years back. He supposedly was a revolutionary painter who did amazing work back in the fifties but destroyed 99% of it, and eventually killed himself by jumping off the Staten Island ferry. After hearing the name, several artists and critics claimed that they remembered the man, even there never was such a person. He was invented by writer William Boyd in a book that was published and promoted by none other than David Bowie. The name Nat Tate was actually a combined form of the two major galleries in London: the National Gallery and the Tate Modern Gallery.

A fun fact about Prester John - In 1441, at the Council of Florence (which was essentially an attempt at a massive power grab over other Christian churches by the Catholic church), the Portuguese wanted a connection with Prester John so badly that they referred to the ambassadors of the Ethiopian Emperor Zara Yaqob as the ambassadors of Prester John. And the guys were there! And they did complain, but the Portuguese and other Catholics kept calling him Prester John, simply because the myth was so valuable.

Alan Smithee. That could explain where the writers of the film "The First Nudie Musical" got the name for the director of "Come, Come Now", which was the film that was being made in "The First Nudie Musical": John Smithee. I couldn't figure out why they didn't just use "Smith". BTW, check out the movie; it's funny and cute and stars Cindy Williams, with a cameo appearance by Ron Howard.

Outside of Tony Clifton, I have never heard of any one these people. This list should have been obscure fake people who tried to be famous.

Why isn't Anne Shirley on this list? She made it to Canada's top 100 most influential people, even though Lucy Maud Montgomery invented Anne, in the literary series "Anne of Green Gables".

Sweet lord, to those of you commenting "I've never heard of these people, bad title" etc, it is not a list of non-existent people that are famous NOW it is a list of people that were famous AS THE TIME that didn't exist. It is like someone 100 years from now saying "Kardashian who? never heard of them, they aren't famous".
I was hoping #1 would be Chris Gaines, the most famous alter ego of country music singer Garth Brooks. Gaines, as you may know, was Garth's riff on moody pop singers famous at the time. He even had a full episode of VH1's BTM dedicated to the singer of Gaines.

Doesn't fit the list. If you refer to the actual Saint Nikolas from Myra, on which Santa Claus is originally based, that person did exist, he was a bishop in the town of Myra in the 5th century, I think (too lazy now to look up the exact dates). If you refer to the fantasy folklore character who lives at the North pole and delivers presents by means of a flying reindeer sleigh, no sane adult ever believed that this guy could possibly exist.

I can't believe that two movie goers were awarded $1.5 million for "being lured into a movie". How could that judgement not have been appealed? That's worse than suing fast-food restaurants for being overweight.I guess the courts would be filled with plaintiffs who just saw "Suburbicon" except, apparently, no one went to see it, lol (including myself).

I have heard of 3 of these, Prester John, Pope Joan, and David Manning. Did Manning ever review the movie Pope Joan? I thought for sure “Jimmy” from the Jimmy’s World article would have made the list.

The only one I knew on this list was Alan Smithee. As soon as this video started I wondered if that name would make an appearance. Another name that is used in a similar way to Alan Smithee is Cordwainer Bird. It is an alias used by Harlan Ellison when something he wrote for television show or a movie gets altered in a way that is not to his liking.

You forgot to add 'the Archies'. A cartoon from the late 1960s about a group of teenagers and their all american hi-jinks, they also played in a band. They had several songs on Billboard's top, including the #1 hit 'Sugar Sugar' and stayed there for 4 weeks (quite an accomplishment back then!) except, well, the band didn't exist. Not even like 'The Monkeys' at least they eventually learned to play lol 'The Archies' was just a group of studio musicians that never got the credit they deserved.
