I just watched this with my 9 yo son who insisted I post up that the Vanderbeeker Series is his favorite! There are 3, and they make excellent read aloud's.

My dad read the Hobbit to my sister and I when I was young! I loved it! We read Narnia, Little Women, and Anne of Green Gables that way too!

We read Narnia together as a family, but my boys weren't willing to listen to Little Women or Anne...I tried to convince them that Anne wasn't as girly as they were thinking it would be, but it was a no go. My oldest daughter and I read the first book though and she loved it.

Haha yeah I can see how it'd be hard to convince boys to read Anne and Little Women lol. My dad said he was "Anne-d out" by the end of the last book ahaha.

I love reading children's chapter books. I have wonderful memories reading aloud to my 22 year old daughter. She says it fueled her love of reading. My 8 year old daughter is just now getting into them but my younger boys aren't there yet.

I have never read The Indian in the Cupboard. I have heard it's good though. Maybe when my youngest is a bit older we'll pick it up.

don't have kids, but my husband and I read aloud together. We've done Watership Down. Another fun read aloud is The Princess Bride. We've also enjoyed Holes and have worked through the original Shannara trilogy by Terry Brooks. I recommend The Elfstones of Shannara out of that trilogy, it's pretty epic.

Another good book for like middle gradeish, is The Pushcart War. My dad read it to me when I was a kid and I really enjoyed it.

I need to re-read The Princess Bride. I read it many years ago and didn't enjoy it, but since then I've heard many people say it is one of their favorite books. I love the movie so much, I think it effected my reading of the book. But maybe I just read the book at the wrong time.

by far the most read chapter book in our house has been little house in the big woods. every time I read another book in the series my boys insisted I re-read the first. they also loved listening to Alice in wonderland (I think, it was a pretty illustrated annotated special edition of some Alice book, anyway)

Great list Em! Interestingly I read--or dd has read--all of them to my kiddo, except Watership Down, which is slated for this year :) Probably our most fave ever read-aloud is My Family and Other Animals, by Gerald Durrell. There is drinking and odd situations so I would rate it for 11+. My would-be naturalist, though, found a kindred spirit in Gerald as a kid.

Thanks! I own that book, but we haven't done it as a read aloud yet. I can see that it could make for a great read aloud though.
