It'll be interesting to see if she decides to take on 'serious' film roles as her role in Grey Gardens demonstrated she has more range than what we've seen. If she had been nominated for Scream, I think that would have aged incredibly well. It's one of the most memorable performances of that year, easily. I actually love when 'short' performances get recognised, for me they are well within scope of what the supporting category is there for - performances that are quality over quantity. Another great slasher performance of that period was Sarah Michelle Gellar in I Know What You Did Last Summer. I wish the film took a different turn, both her character and her performance were superior to anyone else in the film.

I think Jennifer Lopez missed for Hustlers for two reasons: first, the role of Ramona was not out of her depths as an actress even though it was a good performance. The character is villainous but also glamorous, which is Jennifer Lopez in real life. Second, I think it’s her off screen personal life. The media’s obsession with her love life encumbers her fellow actors from taking her seriously. That’s not her fault necessarily but it’s clear that her fame takes precedence over her quality as an actor.

Marilyn Monroe for "Bus Stop". Her omission from the Oscars that year for either actress or supporting actress is one of the acting community's biggest blunders and a very narrow minded omission. Her role in "Some Like It Hot" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" should have, at the very least, been up for consideration. She was, among other things, a great comedic actress. The one actress that would have been on my list is Jacqueline Bisset. The closest she’s gotten is a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Dancing on the Edge.’ In the last couple of years she’s won a number of film festival awards for ‘Loren and Rose,’ but she has been in so many that deserved at least a nomination, including ‘Under the Volcano’ (1985, directed by John Huston and opposite Albert Finney; was nominated at the Golden Globes), The Sleepy Time Gal’ (2003, got a Clotrudis Award nomination for Best Actress) or her work in ‘Death in Love’ (2008, won at Boston Film Festival for Best Actress). Like Rebecca Hall, she appears in a number of indies so I kinda understand why she hasn’t been nominated, but even when it’s a more promoted, awards-worthy film like ‘Under the Volcano,’ only the Golden Globes noticed. Then again, it was also the Golden Globes that awarded the correct Best Actress in 1974 (Gena Rowlands for ‘A Woman Under the Influence’)-sorry, just had to get that in there…😄

Marilyn Monroe deserved a nom for at least Some Like It Hot, Doris Day was good but definitely not at the level of the other 4 nominees. Also, she was amazing in Bus Stop and the Misfits. Rita Hayworth was robbed of a nom for Gilda. Jean Harlow did enough good films and performances and in her lifetime was already deserving of a nomination by 1935/1936 (Dinner at Eight, Wife vs Secretary, Libeled Lady). I know that Lucille Ball is usually not a common actress to think of when talking about snubs in Oscar history. Still, she has one performance in 1942 The Big Street that definitely at least came close to an Oscar nomination. Veronica Lake should have gotten an Oscar nomination in Best Supporting Actress for So Proudly We Hail. Ann Sheridan is also the best-supporting actress for The Man Who Came to Dinner, Kathleen Byron in Black Narcissus, Linda Darnell's A Letter Two Three Wives, and Barbara Leigh Hunt In Frenzy all in Best Supporting Actress, also some of those years could have definitely accepted them as nominees cause they weren't solid (1949, for instance, was a major weak year overall).

This is a great list of actresses. I find it hilariously harrowing that the Academy Awards seems to have a distain for recognizing the talents of women of Black descent (Pam Grier, Tessa Thompson, Ruth Negga, Thandiwe Newton and Rebecca Hall being superb examples!). It speaks to a posh, white supremacy mindset that is not only indicative of America, but the world at large in its treatment of Black and BIPOC people. By the way, Robin Wright should star in a movie opposite Glenn Close (maybe as her daughter or sister); depending on the script, the direction and marketing, I can easily see that film and the actors in them getting the accolades they deserve.).

Brian, you should be a consultant for the Academy Awards. I so agree with C. O'Hara and Rebecca Hall. She was amazing in Christine.

If the movie would have done better box office, that would have been more likely. In the pre-streaming era, it basically tanked.

She retired from acting hence not eligible for this video (she's now an acting teacher/coach, which I imagine she is superb at) but I would love for her to make a full comeback because she was very good in what she did. She carried Drag Me To Hell. She's good value on Twitter as well, often enjoying banter about the various indignities her character in that film endures and the stunts she did :)

Can they please start rewarding more comedies and genre films? Too many good performances are getting overlooked.

Rebecca Hall in "Resurrection" was unforgettable... unfortunately that film was super divisive and strange, but holy crap, that performance is an all-timer. I'm so happy you brought her up Brian!

Loved those choices, especially Rebecca Hall. Hard to believe she started out as a child actor in The Chamomile Lawn in the early 90s. And she’s really good in that!

Claire Danes was wonderful in Temple Grandin. That could've gotten her an Oscar nomination if it hadn't been made for TV.

Gillian Anderson is phenomenal, but to my knowledge, all her best performances are in tv series.

She's not technically half, but a quarter or less. Her maternal grandfather was light skinned enough to "pass". Meaning her mother was biracial. Still, it's a fascinating piece of her history and I LOVE that she got to explore it through making Passing.

Great list. I mean is easier with actresses than actors. I don't think Demi Moore should be in top 10, but definitive in top 25, maybe top 20. I think O Hará should replace. Also Pam Grier in Jackie Brown is one of the best performance of the 90s. But this is for actressew with more than 1 movie performance, the same of Tessa Thompson. Maybe not are in top 10, but definitive are in top 30 (Thandie Newton deserved more than Thompson place. I also think that Zhang Ziyi deserves to be at least in honorable mention. Other actresses that werent surprise Oscar nominated are Kelly MacDonald, Anna Taylor Joy and Rose Byrne, and veteran Margo Martindale

I will never understand how JLO wasn’t nominated for “Selena”. That’s one of the best performances ever captured on screen. Also how wasn’t she nominated for “Hustlers” or “Enough”. I’ve always said it say what y’all want about her music but she can act DOWN!
