Refin a fight is hard af. Refs sometimes dont stop the fight because there are still chances for the other fighter to comeback (which is common because fighters are so tough and are willing to die in there). I'd rather ruin this chance than having him seriously injured or killed tho. Early stoppages are a sign that ppl still love the sport and want fighters to do their job as safe as possible.

I remember a tittle fight between Larry Holmes and Marvis Frazier. Holmes stunned Marvis with a right hook and Frazier fell into the corner helpless. He was out, but the ref continued to let the fight go on. Larry looked to the ref, then threw another right which Frazier never even lifted his guard to defend and then Larry looked to the ref once again and by that point, even Ray Charles could have seen that Frazier was done, he was out of it. It’s a wonder we couldn’t see cartoon birds flying around his head by then. Holmes hit Frazier a few more times, but was pulling his punches as not to kill the kid. I understand it was legendary boxer Smokin’ Joe Frazier’s oldest son and they wanted to give him every chance to stay in the fight, but you’re not helping him if he ends up dead or worse, a slobbering idiot in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. After several pleas to the ref to stop the fight, the ref finally called it. It was a bit scary. Had that been a young Tyson, rather than Holmes, Frazier would have been in great danger. In fact, Frazier did fight Tyson that same year, I think. A similar thing happened and Frazier was knocked out by the first uppercut by Tyson, but Tyson continued to hit him with more uppercuts. Tyson never looked to the ref for help because I don’t think Mike knew Frazier was out, but Marvis wasn’t putting up a guard or trying to block anymore punches. That was very early in Mike’s career when he was a brutal, super-aggressive, unstoppable monster coming at you. He focused totally on targeting you with punches, not whether you were alive or conscious? Thankfully, Frazier wasn’t stuck in the corner upright and dazed like in the Holmes fight. It was the constant barrage of uppercuts that were keeping Marvis up. When Tyson finally missed with an uppercut, Frazier went to the ground like a sack of wet cement and the fight was finished. I don’t think Mike would have looked to the ref, because unlike Holmes, Mike would have had his head down in defense of his chin and not noticed the boy in trouble. If Tyson thought he was in trouble, he would have certainly stopped his assault and looked to the ref for help. He wasn’t that big of a monster, just a fierce competitor and possibly the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. It’s debatable, but here is an argument to be made. The greatest boxer of all time would have to be Sugar Ray Robinson, but the rest is debatable for the heavyweight title. Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, George Foremam or Mike Tyson. Some people may argue for more recent Heavyweights , like Lennox Lewis, but I don’t think they belong in the discussion, but you can make an argument. George Forman ruined his place in history by retiring for 10 years in his prime. He could have won many fights in that time because he was destroying boxers like Ken Norton, Smokin’ Joe Frazier, who was world champion at the time and many other great boxers. He lost that tough fight in Africa against Ali, who he probably could have beaten in a rematch, since he now knew the rope-a-dope trick Ali used to wear him out. There was also the weather in Africa at that time which was like 86°F with about 90% humidity. The weather effected both men, but George exerted himself far more and overheated. If he just laid back and not thrown all his biggest punches in feeble attempts to knock out a totally protected Ali, he could have had steam in the later rounds. Everyone knew that it would take just one dumb mistake, one little slip and Ali would go bye, bye to birds land with George’s power punches. One to the head, or a couple to the midsection and Ali would have learned a new meditation style for prayer time. George practice with the heaviest bags available and unusually left them dented in the middle. Ali’s trainers wouldn’t even let him look at the heavy bags as they passed through the gym. They didn’t want him to see the massive dents Forman left on those bags and think about the damages to his midsection he may have to endure. The cracking of ribs and smashed kidneys he may suffer would certainly be on his mind as he trained. Ali couldn’t even dent the lightest heavy bags, so that’s would be scary to see.
