The Fifth Element seemed to have the most realistic version of the future. Because in real life, all the old tech and architecture doesn't just go away, it mingles with the new tech for a long time. All the dirt and imperfection inherent in a human's touch is still very much present and everything that floats isn't always shiny and clean (you're still going to have to get your hover cars WASHED). Like that asian guy in his simple, floating restaurant. Or the dank alleyways and window rails on the sides of buildings. The future won't suddenly arrive just because we all raise an imaginary number in our heads one digit higher. It comes...One. Step. At. A. Time.

As a New York girl, I have a very soft spot for The 5th Element's futuristic portrayal of Manhattan. I love it, and at the same time I'm frightened by every aspect of it. Even then, I have to agree with your #1. That futuristic Los Angeles from Blade Runner is my most favorite one of all time. There's just something about futuristic, rainy, dark, cyberpunk cities covered in neon lights that is extremely captivating. You guys forgot a very impressive one though, the futuristic Asian city from from Ghost in the Shell (modeled after Hong Kong), which imho I think is good enough to rival Blade Runner, and the most likely one to come to pass in reality. There's also some extremely good ones in video games, and what's so cool about them, is that you get to walk around in them and stop to look around and stare at whatever you want. There's Deus Ex (the original from Y2K), and Deus Ex: Invisible war, E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy, and one that deserves a long overdue remake, if it managed to stay true to the original: Syndicate Wars. (but it's better if the current game industry doesn't touch it though...)

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one crust, and place in a 9 inch pie plate. Roll out top crust, and set aside. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, tapioca, and cinnamon. Add blackberries and apple slices. Toss gently to coat without mashing the berries. Let stand for 20 minutes. Spoon filling into pastry lined pan. Dot with butter. Moisten the edge of the pastry with water. Cover with top crust; trim and crimp edge. Cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape during baking. Cover edge with foil to prevent over-browning. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil, and continue baking for 20 to 25 minutes, or until crust is golden brown. Cool on wire rack.

And to add it, as a matter of fact, christianity or religion itself have been a halt for technological advance throughout the centuries. But also if we wouldn't stick to use Otto-motors for almost 250 years now and adding up to this using non-renewable energies only, we would surely reach higher levels of technology by now. Thus would mean a better and longer life without fearing of our planet running out of fuel for us. I don't wish to see what happens when we'll fight eachother for clean water like in Mad Max...

There's a reason that Logan's Run looks like it was set in a shopping mall: it was. The production used various malls in and around Dallas/Ft Worth for its shooting locations. I saw Blade Runner when it was first released in the early 80s. As I watched the opening pans of Los Angeles, I told myself that there was no way any place on Earth was going to look like that in 40 years. Then I took my first trip to LA. It looks like that now, minus the Tyrell building. 😅

You could have put Star Wars cities; futuristic doesn't necessarily mean set in the future it means 'having or involving very modern technology or design.'

For me the best that have been presented here for imagination and entertainment is "Fifth Element". However, there are also other great futuristic movies that have been shown such as "Avatar", "Gattaca", "Total Recall", "Soylent Green", "2046", etc.

The wide shot of 2263 New-York City from the 5th Element (when the spaceship leaves the spaceport) looks like that because lots of sea water was used for terraforming on other planets, countering at the same time the melting ice of the Arctic/Antarctica. The sea level is extremely low. That's why we see habitations on the banks of the East River, below the Brooklyn Bridge, all around Manhattan, where there was water before, and the towering base of the Statue of Liberty.

I knew one of the Metropolis movies would make the list. Either 2026 or the anime one. Also... god... Blade Runner... one of my favorite movies. :)

Metropolis should always be considered 'no1' in anything to do with scifi/fantasy. Everyone followed.. ..and still using the concept that was used in 1925/26, for almost everything futuristic made till today!
