I’m with you Zee, I’ve had some very exciting games of Mysterium, especially when you play by the rules and reveal the number of the correct group of cards at the end.
@JohnLudlow
6 жыл бұрын
My wife and I love the game (for all the reasons that Sam hates it) but I wouldn't say the ending is exciting - but I'll put that down to the fact that we play two player, and the two player version of that game has a horrible kludge for the last portion of the game which kind of kills the excitement at that point. But everything up to that point is great: "You know you're supposed to actually look at the cards, right?" "This is what happens when we get psychics off Gumtree" "Clearly the ghost has already gone insane" "Look, there's a blue thing in the background, and hats are sometimes blue, and that guy looks like he might wear a hat, so *obviously* it's him" "Clues, dear, you're supposed to give me clues" Not every group is OK with that kind of thing, but we find it hilarious.

Mysterium has such a great buildup because it gets progressively harder and more dependent on learning to read the ghosts intensions, or being consistent as the ghost.

Co-op games can be hit or miss. They are extremely exciting when you know you are about to lose unless you can pull off a miracle at the last moment. Probably near the top of my list for this would be Burgle Bros., which just ramps up nicely, and Forbidden Island, which has the added visual element of the board disappearing as the island floods.

Letters From Whitechapel has had some nailbiter endings. Every game of Dead of Winter I've played has ended with, "Come on! Just save that last point of moral!" Or "We just need one more food!"
@feverpa
6 жыл бұрын
I second this! Letters From Whitechapel is new to our collection, but we've had a few great games already. The way that both sides feel like they have a daunting task is excellent. As Jack, you feel like you can't get fancy early in the game - which usually means the detectives get a whiff of you early. Then, the walls close in quickly on future turns. As the detectives, it very rarely feels like you're certain of anything. A TON of tension in this game, and the ending is always exciting.

I';d have put Aeon's End at the top of my list - it always seems to come down to one or two turns. We'll be at the point of death, sure we're going to fail, then someone will draw cards with enough damage (or figure out a way to boost damage with relics etc) to kill the nemesis and win the game. The last time we played, there was a minion with a ridiculous amount of health, but through a bit of strategy (and a good draw) we boosted the damage on my wife's next turn so she could kill the nemesis and win.

I think every campaign game which is heavily story-driven is carrying thay aspect that Zee is mentioning about legacy games - Mice & Mystics is my top choice and example here, where apart from exciting moments throughout each mission, the excitement is always the most when clearing the last room beaten and exhausted and the final story moment gives us a glimpse of our future (next chapter) Also, great choice for including Dungeon Twister in your list Tom! And you should also consider Chaos in the Old World - VERY tense last round and ending with the ruinations and all

Any difficult coop games generally have an exciting ending given everyone is deeply engaged in surviving or building one last chance of winning. Ghost Stories and Arkham Horror both are good picks, along with Red Dragon Inn: Battle for Greyport, which a totally overlooked hidden gem! BSG often falls a little flat for our group: too easy for humans to win.

Street Masters : Rise of the Kingdom. Solo, or with friends, most games end spectacularly. Either you lose early, or it comes down to the wire. Trying to get the last hit on the big bad, hoping to draw the exact card you need, hanging on to your last few life points..... More often than not, its super super super down to the wire. Highly recommended.

I haven’t played most of those, so I can’t say they’re wrong, but for me: Forbidden Desert/Island - very well balanced, so it always winds up close. The Mind - only played it once, but damn it was tense right up to the end. Ticket to Ride - not generally and exciting game, but if I don’t complete my missions it’s a desperate grab, and if I do then I usually pick more missions and put myself back in danger of not completing them. So I always have some tension at the end.

The game I've played with the most exciting ending is Sentinels of the Multiverse. It always comes down to the very end, the heroes down to little health and trying to kill the boss before they die. Legacy Games are a great call for sure. The post game excitement of unlocking new content or making permanent upgrades is great. Star Wars Rebellion and Imperial Assault both have some tense back and forth finale moments. Specter Ops, and most hidden movement games, also provide a lot of tension in their finale. BSG, and generally any game with a traitor mechanic, can provide an amazing ending. Betrayal at House on the Hill is hit or miss with the finale - its either exciting and tense or its a dud. I've never been anything but miserable playing Ghost Stories. I would not call the ending to Cosmic Encounters anymore exciting than other games with take-that mechanics; its just about the same as the finale to a game of Munchkin. I've often found myself in that situation as a spectator, completely removed from the situation, just waiting for the sweet mercy of an ending. For a game to have an exciting end, it really needs a strong build up and escalation for all the players. All too often Munchkin and Cosmic Encounters can have players who are just stuck, falling farther and farther behind the leaders.
