Pilot light seems to blow itself out, like there's to much pressure coming out the Oriface. I took the assembly out and it was clogged. I used a stainless micro fiber from a wire brush smaller the the hole, maybe .005", and was able the clear the debris. The hole is so small you have to hold it up to a light to see through it. I do machine work so I knew not to change the hole size. Any ideas on why it blows itself out. The unit is probably 25 years old, but was fairly clean inside and has always been a good unit, and has always been hard to start.

Question, I have the same set up here but lately my pilot flame is coming out yellow 🔥, I recently installed a brand new pilot assembly, I made sure the pilot line is clear by cleaning the orifices on each end. But the flame when the burner turns on, it comes out yellow causing soot to cover the thermocouple and the shock igniter point. I keep having to clean them whenever the pilot goes out and can’t get a spark. is something wrong with the gas? I use propane

Thanks. Excellent video with clear explanation. Now I understand why our gas hot water heater may not be igniting; lack of spark or lack of gas to pilot. Simple issues but getting a techie to come out and do the job probably will require that I take out a second mortgage to pay for multiple visits before it gets sorted. And that excludes travelling time and tool time and apprentice 's costs. Buying and fitting new unit is probably less expensive.

Judging by the gas valve, that's a much older unit than what I deal with on an almost daily basis. Most of the water heaters I work on are 10+ years old and use thermopiles, not thermocouples. They generally also have gas valves with diagnostic light. I've never had a spark ignitor fail because they are rarely used in the lifespan of the unit and I've worked on tons of water heaters. Most of the pilot lights go out because the burner compartment needs to be cleaned/vaccuumed and/or water heater needs to be flushed of sediment that's causing the limit switch to keep tripping.

What? Limit switch to keep tripping?? Please elaborate.. My pilot has never went out before until today, but now it won't stay lit or let me turn the heat dial up bcuz it goes out quickly after holding the button down more than a minute. I did notice in the past that some days there's really hot water & other days just warm but not hot water. Don't know if that's bcuz of wind in exhaust flue or not?

Hey Wiz.. so what's the best type of cleaner to clean the orifices with that won't leave a residue behind, carburetor cleaner? I also use pure orange oil degreaser type soap/solvent, then rinse with water & dry when cleaning auto parts etc.. Also, can anodes be accessed to be cleaned of hard water or are they inaccessible?
@gamewizardks
2 жыл бұрын
@@jhenry0688 - I don't use chemicals to clean the orifices. I use a small wire brush to remove the soot. This isn't usually where the problems occur, though. The biggest issue is buildup of soot in the burner compartment and/or sediment in the tank. The soot and sediment acts as an insulator and the heat from the burner isn't transferred very easily to the water trapping the heat in the burner compartment. Since the heat can't escape, this trips the high limit safety switch and shuts down the water heater. The soot should be brushed off the top and sides of the burner compartment and vacuumed out. To remove sediment from the tank, flush the water heater. Also be sure that the air inlet on the bottom of the burner compartment is not blocked. As far as the anode, most of these can be removed with a socket wrench.

All in all an excellent video. I do have some issue with your explanation of the thermal fuse. At about 15:45 you state that the fuse shouldn’t “pop“ and open up unless there is no water in the tank, i disagree. The thermal fuse is a safety measure in the event of an overheating condition to keep water below the boiling point. If you look at the rating of the fuse is is probably around 91C (195 F) temperature, once the threshold is met, the fuse opens the electrical circuit from the thermocouple, pilot light is extinguished and the water heater will shut down because the pilot light will no longer be lit. The thermocouple must be hot at all times in order for gas to flow. You will note the pilot light and thermocouple are below the main burner, if the pilot light is not heating the thermocouple (even if the main burner is burning) the solenoid will be released and the gas valve will shut off gas flow to the appliance.

Maybe this is my problem, but I'm really green with this experience, could you possibly read my 2 comment posts & let me know what you think is my problem? I think that it's the metal deal that's not heating & keeping the pilot lit. That part of the video threw me off when he was explaining that one. Not sure.. maybe I have ADHD? I think I'll just clean the burner compartment & take a metal scrub brush to all parts that take LP gas bcuz I'm not a technician. I saw another Rheem pilot video where they talked about a fail safe feature, glass deal with black oil inside it that breaks when there's an issue & causes the pilot to shut down. The guy never said what model he had so not sure if my Rheem has one or not? I think my model is a Rheem classic. Wish the plumber would have installed a different brand bcuz I'm not at all impressed with Rheem & all the videos where customers are having multiple issues with these.

Fantastic Video. I'm having a problem with my spark ignitor grounding out somewhere or corrosion on the ignitor rod inside. I tested the ignitor and it is producing a spark. The spark isn't making its way inside. I'm guessing it's corrosion since if I press the ignitor enough I finally get a spark inside. Once the pilot is lit I can see a spark every time I press the ignitor.

Although this is an in-depth look at almost all the things that could be wrong, but as my dad once said, start with the stupid simple things first. The most simple explanation as to why a pilot keeps going out is a lack of air flow. I mean, how are things getting bent inside a closed system that has no moving parts? It's much more likely that something is clogging the air intake

Thank you for this instructional video. I wanted to add. We just had our central air gas heater exchanged. The technician shut off the gas to install the new system. The new HVAC heating works GREAT. However, when I got up this morning we had no hot water. The pilot light went out when they installed the new system. I tried a dozen times to reignite the pilot on the water heater, but nothing. However, when the tech installed the new HVAC system and turned off the gas into the house, it evacuated the entire gas line leading into the water heater, and because of the tiny orifice on the pilot light, it took forever for gas to refill into the pilot gas line. You follow me? So, I had to hold down on the pilot button forever until gas refilled the line and the igniter finally worked. I was freaking out. "It is this or that?" for an entire hour. Anyway.... we got hot water again! Thanks Coach!

So in my situation i can get the burner going. Spark is good, gas seems to be good and what not. I turn ln the burner fully and its going and about the 3-4 min mark i notice the flame starts dancing way to much and slowly the flame starts dying out on one side of burner until it just dies out completely. I noticed the tube that feeds the flame to the burner dies out to and causes the burner to die out after. So my question is, the little tube that supplies gas to the spark is that suppose to stay on indefinitely or suppose to turn off? Or is it my thermocouple? Like i said the start up is smooth and can get the burner going but it’s a matter of time before it dies out.

When I sprayed soapy water on all the gas lines there is a huge bubble at the bottom of the thermostat box. I can't tell where it's coming from any ideas?

3:14 - "Near to ground" is correct. It needs to be so near to ground, in fact, that it is actually making electrical contact with ground.

There is an ECO connection between the thermocouple and the gas valve. There are contacts on both sides of a wafer like thing that is between the threaded end of the thermocouple and the valve is there a way to get the pilot to stay lit if the ECO connection is bad

Is the pilot light supposed to stay lit at all times?

This is such an archaic design. Has it changed in 100 years?! We need Elon Musk to get into this water heating industry.
