Not sure that Geoffrey Boycott would appreciate being called Geoff Boycott and would appreciate less that there was a photo of Basil D'Oliveira instead of the great man himself. Did the same with Wally Hammond, showing a photo of Don Bradman. Up your game Crickstats lol

@@baliksupper6043 Yeah, I watched him against Australia many times, and he also put the bowlers to sleep. Unfortunately for Australia (and other teams) it worked by draining their energy, frustrating them and just plain annoying them. By the time he was eventually out, the other batsmen coming in had the chance to bat against tired and pissed off bowlers.

@@baliksupper6043 I thought the object of an opening batsman was to wear down the opposition's attack, so the middle order could pile on the runs. More often than not, Boycott had to carry the rest of the team, thus scoring 22 test centuries and a 151 first class centuries. He never wore a helmet, yet faced some of the fastest bowlers in the game. He learnt the game on uncovered pitches, where good technique and patience was rewarded. He also lacked the advantage of modern powerful bats which help the ball clear the boundary.
@markdignam3525

@@baliksupper6043 His own batting was somewhat boring, but the other batsmen in the English team (and probably Yorkshire) were happy that he frustrated the opposition team as it meant that it made their own job easier. Once when Brearley was asked about it (I think it was the 78/79 Ashes) he said something similar. He also pointed out that when Boycott drove the opposition to despair, England would win the match. On that day, we batted all day long for I recall 77 not out. Yeah in 100 or so overs, with England being 3-190 after losing 3 quick wickets in the first session. The English supporters may have had to watch a slow days' cricket, but they enjoyed the fact that England won the match against an Aussie team that was admittedly badly affected by Packer's WSC.

It's a pretty good list however picking the greatest English batsmen is subjective unless you only go by stats that is, for instance W.G. Grace was a superstar in his era he was like a film star in his following, while many people would have May, Cowdrey , Graveney , Dexter or Gower somewhere on the list because of the way they played the game. I agree with the top two as Hammond was a great player and I mean great and Hobbs was rated by many as the greatest all round batsmen in history even surpassing Bradman in some people's opinion because he could bat in any conditions no matter how difficult, hence the fact he scored nearly 200 first class centuries, just think about that number.

Why is Graham Gooch not on the list? Sir Graham Gooch was the greatest English batsman. He is better than Kevin Pietersen. I accept that Cook and Root are the greatest English batsmen.

Cook & Root have rarely batted Vs great bowlers. I think Cook may have faced Warne and McGrath in their last Ashes series but imo the standard of world bowling has dropped a lot since the '80s and '90s. Way easier for Root to average what he does now. He wouldn't have averaged that against West Indies in the '80s, Wasim, Waqar, Imran or the Aussies in the '90s.

Being of a certain age, and ‘finding’ cricket during 1963/4, when I was 14, (watching Boycott play in spectacles), I have found it a pleasure and an honor to have been able to watch live several of these great players represent their country at the top level. Could I just add Tom Graveney, though, in truth, perhaps not a true great, but for sheer style in the manner he seemed to caress a ball off the bat to the boundary? I missed my train home once, being transfixed by his sheer class. Aaaah, memories.

I am pleased to see so many pre-WW2 batsmen on the list. The increase in the number of test match nations after WW2 (from 6 to 12 since 1952), the number of test matches played, the introduction of covered pitches, and the modern focus on limited over matches makes statistical comparisons almost meaningless. There is a limited amount of footage of pre-WW2 players, so reports in the newspapers and Wisden may be the only source of information, but it is clear that Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Hutton and Compton were giants in their day.

I want to let this blogger know that you don't used averages to determined the greatness of a batsman, because most of the average comes by the amount of not outs the batsman have against the runs he scored. It was really surprised me to see that Graham Gooch is not in the top 10 .Although Jack Hobbs may 199 fc hundreds, it is not test cricket at there is lot of them in the top batsmen cannot bat better than Graham Gooch. He holds the records against india in 1988 at Lord's scoring the runs into a test match, 333 in the 1st inning and 123 in the 2nd making 456 runs in a test match. He also scored 156 fc hundreds with over 50, 000 runs. .

This might be a bit controversial but for me the standard of bowling worldwide deteriorated a lot from the 2000s onwards which partly explained why KP was able to make opposition attacks look like club bowlers. The only exceptional bowling attack he faced was '05/'07 Aussies. Quite a few of the opposition bowling attacks in '80s and '90s were top notch.

First, this was obviously written and put together by someone who knows what they're talking about, well done. Couple of issues, I wouldn't include Kevin Pieterson, first not English although obviously England-qualified. Also, the rumours about why his Test career ended are, err dodgy, and not repeating on here. David Gower gets my vote for that spot, gorgeous to watch, all talent and not to shabby at cover point either. Next I would put Len Hutton at number one, in part because of his 364, but more so his 60 not out, 2nd innings, Brisbane, 1950-1. ???? you ask? It was on the stickiest of stickies, batting all but impossible, and the Aussies STILL couldn't get him out, his technique so good.. Even Bradman couldn't have played that one.
