i would belive Subutai belongs on the list next to Genghis. he was the general of entire mongol army. Genghis of course united Mongolia and build the army, but almost all of his greatest victories that won him the biggest empire ever was due to the strategic mind of Subutai. and also genghis´s title was not general, but Khan (equal to emporor, king etc) Subutai was titled general of the entire army (orlok general), along generals as Jelme, Jebe ect generals of smaller divisions named Tumen (10.000 soldiers)

Frederic the Great was soundly defeated by Russian Generlisimo Alexander Suvorov who fought in 63 battles and won them all! At the old age he crossed Alps with his Russian army almost surrounded and yet got through! He also has written the book "The science of victory." His protégé Count Bagration stopped Napoleon's advance at the cost of his own life! Russian army eventually drove Napoleon out of Russia in defeat and humiliation. I have 2 more. Galvarino was a Mapuche warrior, located what is now Chile and Argentina. He was captured by the Spanish and his hands were cut off. He was sent back to his tribe as an example to end a war. Instead he rallied his tribe, was given command of a squadron, had knives tied to his stumps and went into battle. He was eventually captured again and hanged. Honda Tadakatsu was a daimyo in Japan during the sengoku era. He was in 57 battles without suffering a significant wound. He was often called “the warrior who surpassed death”. Oda Nobunaga, who didn’t often give praise, called him “A samurai among samurai”. One of the key points you didn't mention in relation to Alexander is how he conducted himself in battle. He may have been the king/General/commander but unlike many others in that role he always led his troops into battle rather than sitting further back. Thus putting himself more directly in the conflict and combat. If I remember right there is one recorded conflict where he was the 1st to scale a wall of a city and as the most obvious target took a spear to the chest. He would survive this although by all accounts whatever damage was done to his lungs by this would leave him with a raspy voice for the remainder of his life.

I encourage you to read the "Secret History of the Mongols." I assure you, Temujin was a peerless warrior. Okay... Many of these men were warriors who led warriors and did great acts that even changed the course of history. But if we talk about warriors who fought alone against many, the list shrinks drastically. 3 example: Anibal Milhais, Portuguese, WW I, in Lys, managed alone to stop the advance of German battalions and save the lives of several brothers in arms and other allied nations men, twice; Simo Häyhä, known as "White Death", a farmer who decided to fight for his country, became the deadliest sniper in memory and firing his gun without a scope, the Russians must remember him very well. Finally, Lachhiman Gurung, a Gurka warrior soldier, who after finding himself alone in front of 200 Japanese soldiers, decided not to run away and fight until the end and despite having lost a hand and one of his eyes during the fight he did not stop fighting for 4 excruciating hours of pain until his companions arrived to support him. He was decorated and despite these injuries he remained active in combat until the end of the war. Oh... I remembered another great soldier, Sempronius Densus - the Roman centurion who faced the Praetorian Guard alone. It is necessary to have courage to fight for what is right and not opt for what is easiest, especially when what is right means fighting against countless opponents who will probably represent our end. Even more courageous when our adversaries are our brothers. I don't know if solders like these are still made.

While accused of treason by the Spanish Governor of Cuba, he took his small 600-odd man force, and basically conquered the Aztec empire by manipulation, allies, some disease, and being allowed inside Tenochtitlan with his forces, killing the Aztec Emperor, looting a bunch of gold from the city, and then raising all the Aztec enemies in an alliance to topple them. And don't forget that after his initial actions in Tenochtitlan, the Spanish governor of Cuba sent another conquistador out to Vera Cruz to arrest/execute Cortez. Despite it all, Cortez did basically manage to destroy the Aztec Empire, and significantly increase the Spanish presence in the New World

I started to think about it - trying to find some names - when I realized that modern warfare has greatly reduced the status of the warrior. After all, it's harder to individually excel on the battlefield when your facing bullets and explosives as opposed to swords and spears. That said, I thought some more, and did manage to come up with some possibilities for the list. They may not be as "great" as those listed, but are definitely worth noting. 1. Geronimo. Born in 1829, Geronimo was an Apache shaman who, from 1850 to 1886, carried out numerous raids in a fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. He was a superb leader in raiding and warfare, frequently lead large numbers of 30 to 50 Apache men. 2. Crazy Horse. A member of the Lakota tribe of the Sioux, Crazy Horse lead various war parties against white American encroachment on native lands. He was a played a major factor in the Battle of Little Big Horn. Crazy Horse led a combined group of approximately 1,500 Lakota and Cheyenne in a surprise attack against brevetted Brigadier General George Crook's force of 1,000 cavalry and infantry before they could join forces with General George Custard. The battle, although not substantial in terms of human losses, delayed Crook's joining Custer, contributing to Custer's subsequent defeat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. An Arapaho warrior who witnessed Crazy Horse in another battle described him as "the bravest man I ever saw. He rode closest to the soldiers, yelling to his warriors. All the soldiers were shooting at him, but he was never hit." 3. Alvin York. Although he was a pacifist, Alvin York became the most decorated American soldier of World War One - earning the Medal of Honor from the U.S., as well as from similar commendations from several Allied countries including France, Italy, and Montenegro. York was a member of Company G, 328th Infantry, 82nd Division. On October 8, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, Company G was order to capture German positions along the Decauville railroad north of Chatel-Chéhéry, France. But heavy enemy machine gun fire and bombings stopped them cold. York, a corporal at the time, assumed command after the death of four higher-ranking non-commissioned officers. "And those machine guns were spitting fire and cutting down the undergrowth all around me something awful," York later recalled. "And the Germans were yelling orders. You never heard such a racket in all of your life. I didn't have time to dodge behind a tree or dive into the brush ... As soon as the machine guns opened fire on me, I began to exchange shots with them. There were over thirty of them in continuous action, and all I could do was touch the Germans off just as fast as I could. I was sharp shooting." York would kill 25 German soldiers - most of them machine gunners. This demoralizing the enemy that their greater force surrendered to York and the seven remaining soldiers under his command. After marching the prisoners behind American lines, York reported to his brigade commander, Brigadier General Julian Robert Lindsey, who remarked: "Well York, I hear you have captured the whole German army." York replied: "No sir. I got only 132."

Some great generals here, but that is a separate, though related, category. Geronimo is the embodiment of the warrior spirit, even, or especially, against impossible odds. But maybe we should rather be seeking heroes of peace...

Y'all forgot to add that Musashi has a whole manga dedicated to him thanks to the 🐐 Takehiko Inoue. sadly though it will probably go unfinished. Takehiko inspired me to be an artist and Musashi's story as a whole is very relatable to any introverted outcast

Crazy how they didn’t put Julius Caesar in top 1 even though he literally has the fear of killing 40 men with just a shield with a spike on it when he was in his 40’s

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated Japanese American unit, is remembered today for its brave actions in World War II. Despite the odds, the 442nd's actions distinguished them as the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US military.Sep 24, 2020

Where's Shaka? Shaka is perhaps the most renowned and recognised African warrior in history. He was a great leader of the Zulu Kingdom. He is famous for uniting the Nguni people into his Zulu Kingdom. This union allowed him to rule over a massive portion of Southern Africa.
