I’m a bit older than you and heavily lean toward the PROG artists more than the metal bands but I am always interested in hearing all music and giving it a chance. But the Drama mention made me write. I think you’re point that if you enter listening to a band at a later date you are much more open to accepting all of the catalog because you are not biased. I think this is why you hear all of the time “I only listen to the older stuff”. Which is fine but sad. I just wanted to say hi, thank you and good work.

Right on Brendon. I do agree with you about certain albums especially “Calling all Stations” that album is really great. One of my favorite tracks is “the dividing line” which has a Phil-ish drum sound. My favorite track on that album is “One Man’s Fool” but then again they all are great songs. Back in 1976 it was always the “Banks/Rutherford” songs. It’s just a shame they didn’t give Ray Wilson a fair shot by recording one more album. But that’s the past now. I was so looking forward to seeing this version of Genesis live but they canceled the US dates back in 1997-98 whenever it was due to lack of ticket sales. End of rant now. Brendon, If you love Jefferson Starship / Modern Times, you really need the "bookend" albums, Freedom At Point Zero from '79 and Winds of Change from '82. They all have a similar feel and the secret weapon that really ties them together is guitarist Craig Chaquico - they really let him cut loose over these. Both Find Your Way Back and Stranger from MT were ALL OVER rock radio at the time. @@BrendonSnyder I think that was more in the UK than in the US though. From what I read the crowd in the UK were hostile towards Trevor Horn and didn't accept him as Jon's replacement even shouting "we want Jon." The album didn't do as well in general and was their first album to not go gold in the US. However, I still never heard of any hostility towards the band in the US and I have heard at least one person say that the Drama tour was the best concert he ever saw. I think at this point most Yes fans definitely accept it though. It's too bad that iteration of the band didn't do one more album. I think it was similar with that other prog band Genesis who broke up after CAS which also wasn't received well but not as bad as people make it out to be.

I agree with you completely on Calling All Stations and Drama! I’d also add Union by Yes and Music From The Elder by Kiss to my list. But my top two choices would be Van Halen 3 by Van Halen and Music From Another Dimension by Aerosmith. I think what you said about coming to these albums later is completely true. I know for many people, VH3 did not meet expectations, but I’m only 26, so since I discovered it alongside all the other albums, I didn’t have those same expectations that were then let down. MFAD for me, though, is sort of the opposite. Aerosmith is my absolute favorite band, and MFAD is the only studio album of theirs that I got to experience as a new release. The hype built up for it, the singles coming out prior to release, the promotional internet videos, Steven promoting it on American Idol, and the eventual release all happened while I was in high school, so I have a LOT of nostalgia for that album! I was so excited to experience a new album from the band that I had been in love with since middle school! So it’ll always hold a special place in my heart!

I'm also a fan of Jefferson Starship's Modern Times! Looks like the CD was only ever released in Japan in 1991, 1998 & 2008. Hopefully a reissue here some time soon. I still have my LP, but I also burned a disc and printed out artwork to have it in my CD collection.

I'm not a fan of twofers but the only CD version of "Modern Times" I own is coupled with "Nuclear Furniture" (Friday Music, US 2009). That twofer is a bit odd, considering "Winds of Change" was released 1982, between the two albums mentioned (released 1981 and 1984 respectively). Even more odd is the twofer released by Edsel, UK in 2008 with "Modern Times" coupled with the 1976 album "Spitfire". So I agree, I would welcome good reissues of "Modern Times" (and the other albums).

As a long time Queensryche fan I wish I could join you in liking "Dedicated to Chaos", but... no. It's just a horrible album. Opening track (and your favorite) Get Started is a listenable poprock song, but that's about it for me. 🙂 I do, however, absolutely adore Promised Land. I even rank it as my second favorite Queensryche album, only beaten by the majestic Op: Mindcrime. Not sure if Promised Land is actually "hated", but I sure haven't heard many fans speak fondly of it. It's always considered "too dark", "too slow" or "too depressing". I just love it. 😄

In no particular order: 1. Big Daddy Kane - Prince of Darkness: People say his rapping got soft, beats got soft. There is a bit of new jack swing on here, but the production is great and Kane does a lot of crazy-good fast flow. 2. Slick Rick - Behind Bars: People don't like Rick the Ruler's voice, say he doesn't sound into it. I feel the production has his vocals too low in the mix at times, but it is so damn catchy and there are tracks that I consider all-time Slick Rick classics. 3. Megadeth - Super Collider: Nobody seems to like Megadeth when they get kind of soft. This one reminds me of the Cryptic Writings era, which I'm also a fan of. I dunno, I just enjoy Dave's songwriting when he doesn't feel confined to metal. 4. Black Sabbath - Never Say Die!: Another varied album. It sounds incredible to me. I know they were all messed on drugs and somewhat disown this, but it has been a favourite since I first heard it. 5. Pain of Salvation - Scarsick: People hated the rapped vocals on a few tracks and how it seemed to be less adventurous than previous works. I was into the concept from the start, so this one really sold me. 6. Pilot - Two's a Crowd: After losing their drummer, it was just Ian Bairnson and David Paton. It's very soft, even for a Pilot album, but there are some seriously good tracks on here. And as much as it's soft, there's a darkness. A mood. 7. Blue Oyster Cult - Club Ninja: I think it's underrated as hell. Kinda heavy at times. A reliance on external songwriters. But for me this is the band adapting to the mid-'80s and actually somehow managing to cover all the different sounds BOC are known for. 8. Captain Beefheart - Bluejeans & Moonbeams: Part of the supposed "Tragic Band" era. I've always loved this album and its derided companion. Not as weird but still kinda weird. Good bluesy stuff with some classic tracks. Also sounds really, really good. 9. Disillusion - Gloria: People hated this after their prog-metal debut. This is very different. Kinda industrial. But still progressive as hell. The album flows from start to finish. 10. Judas Priest - Point of Entry: They went kinda soft, but I loved Judas Priest even on Rocka Rolla. For me this just sounds really big, like it's live, and I love the diverse sounds.

Agree 100% with Fly On The Wall. It was the first original copy (vinyl) of an AC/DC album I owned (12-13 years old). I was shocked years later to find out it wasn't universally loved :). I also agree Turbo gets more hate than it deserves. I think it's a good album. Still, rocks and the amount of keyboards in it are overstated by the critics of it. I also recently listened to and then Bought Chinese Democracy after ignoring it for years. Much better than expected. Hard to compare to the earlier stuff as it's just too different but as a stand-alone album it's good.

If your first albums had been Highway to Hell and Back in Black you would understand. The level there was so incredibly high, it could only get worse, and it did. Well, For those about to Rock almost kept the level of Back in Black, but Flick of the Switch marked clearly the end of the best era. When that album was out, you were hoping for the next to bring back that Back in Black quality, but then came Fly on the Wall and it was a catastrophy. You had to realise, that they will never reach that great sound, phantastic riffs and genius songwriting again. They were like just copying themselves on the level of bad imitators or even a satire.

@@jurgenv.6030 I acknowledge that Highway To Hell and Back In Black are the better albums, along with Powerage and Let There Be Rock which I may even rate better than the more famous 2 but I still think Fly On The Wall is decent. I don't think Acca Dacca have made a really bad album but of course, the quality isn't as high as their greatest moments. No band with such a large discography maintain the level of their best album/s for their whole career.

Albums I love that others hate or vastly under appreciate. This is very off the top of my head, but since you were doing 80s era albums, the first one that came to mind was Asia's debut album in 1982. Obviously a lot of people loved it, since it was a huge seller with tons of radio play. The people that hate the album are the diehard Prog guys from the 70s that I grew up with that thought Asia was a total sellout to commercialism and a disappointment from such a Prog Supergroup group (Wetton>King Crimson, Roxy Music, UK; Palmer> ELP; Howe>Yes; Downes>Buggles and Yes). While I don't deny that they purposely moved away from long epic multipart prog epics and more towards melodic rock songs that had a more mass appeal, for anyone paying attention in the late 70s/early 80s, the Asia album should not have been a huge surprise. John Wetton had been in UK in 78-79, another Prog Supergroup that many people forget (Wetton, Eddie Jobson, Bill Bruford, Alan Holdsworth). That music was very progressive and I loved their 2 studio albums that had both dynamic intense instrumentals, but also some very good more standard rock tunes. Anyone who had heard Nothing to Lose from the 2nd album could hear a virtual template as to how Asia would sound. Also, Yes' Going for the One from that 1977 album points to that same direction, a loud guitar dominated rocker. That trend continued on the Yes Drama album in 1980, which grew initially out of jams that Howe, Squire and White were working on. That streamlined but guitar dominated sound pointed toward Asia too. Not surprising that Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (The Buggles) would join those 3 Yes men to create Drama, and then Downes would go with Howe to form Asia with Wetton and Palmer. The Asia album was created out of the ashes of UK and Yes breaking up, but in many ways a logical step. While Asia doesn't have long complex epics like Prog albums from the 70s, the musicianship was still stellar with Howe's lead guitar, Downes' array of synths, and the powerful Wetton and Palmer rhythm section. Wetton has great pipes as we heard in Crimson and UK, and he knew how to write melodic catchy proggy rock tunes. I will take the Asia album over the Yes 90125 album the following year any day of the week. Unfortunately by 1982, the traditional Prog bands of the 70s were either changing and streamlining their sound (Yes, Genesis, Rush, Kansas, Jethro Tull) or disappearing altogether (Pink Floyd, ELP, Gentle Giant). Even a reformed King Crimson in 1981 went for a more 80s sounding song oriented approach. So I'm not embarrassed to play Asia, it was a great debut album of well crafted catchy tunes by 4 great musicians. The 2nd Asia album wasn't quite as good,, but still plenty of good tunes.
