it's crazy how with hurrican Katrina the core on engineers' whole idea was to spend as little money as possible while building the levies, ultimately caused them to fail and that then lead to the city and the core of engineers spending more money and time on the project. if the job had been done properly the first time, then a lot of the damages would have been way scaled down. the sad thing is, even to the day the levies in New Orleans are STILL not constructed in a way that meet the safety protocols.

I live in Florida and we don't get hit as much, and we are not a hurricane magnet. if we are, Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Jose, Hurricane Maria, Hurricane Gordon, Hurricane Hugo and dozens more will direct hit us. well, Hurricane Irma did do damage to nearby places to my home. and pushed down my front yard tree, and now its gone. At my soccer field trees were pushed down too.

I think the title could have been refined to 'Ten Deadliest/Worst Hurricanes or Tropical Cyclones in History', for the sake of removing the ambiguity. I would have otherwise put Patricia on this list because of its highest recorded sustained windspeed of 215mph for any tropical cyclone, which is pretty incredible regardless of the relatively minimal damage it caused. Otherwise, very interesting list. I think you should do a natural disaster theme.

Hurricane Gloria, September 1985: My husband & I were married less than 2 weeks before. I worked at a department store; he worked as part of the security force for Digital Equipment Corporation. The store I worked for decided to close at noon, but to be open until then so that people could pick up emergency supplies. Half of the entire staff never showed up, so at my end of the store, there were only 2 registers open. We were getting people through as quickly as we could as they got batteries, flashlights, etc. One woman was upset because she wanted to buy a pair of slacks, and it didn't have a tag! I informed the idiot that we were in an emergency situation. Once noon hit, we were allowed to go home. I got home just in time to say GOODBYE to my husband, who was called in for the emergency! Hurricane Ivan, September 2004: My husband & I had decided to drive from NH to SC to visit his mother. We had a 1-1/2 year old daughter, and I was pregnant. We had decided to drive through the night. We had seen reports of the hurricane, but reports were showing that it would head away from our path. However, at about 2 in the morning, in Pennsylvania, we headed right into the final remnants of Ivan! The winds and rain were so strong they ripped magnets & logos off of our Blazer! Oddly enough, the one time our daughter did wake up, she looked around at the driving rain, thunder, lightning, and strong winds, giggled, and went right back to sleep.

I lived in Miami-Dade County during Katrina and Wilma, in a neighborhood that had been completely destroyed by Andrew. For us, Katrina dumped a lot of water and Wilma blew everything around. My family was without power for a few days with lots of debris to clean up. However, Florida did not suffer all that much. I was told that hurricanes get really bad once they hit the gulf with all the warm water. Florida is prone to getting hurricanes, but it's rare to get something catastrophic.

I was only 3 when Katrina and Wilma hit. I have no memories of them bc I was 3 and, according to my mom, I was asleep as it all happened. The only memory I currently have of Katrina was when my grandpa, from my mom's side, took us out to our neighborhood after the storm and my street was basically a river. I still currently live in Miami, Florida

Nothing to add to this list, well portrayed. I like how you included clips of John Hope, who helped create the National Hurricane Center and later became the first hurricane specialist for The Weather Channel. My father remembered the Long Island Express (1938), even though he was only four years at the time. His father brought him down to the beach to see the roaring ocean and he remembered his shins being blasted by the sand.

It's kinda sad how they only talked about New Orleans for hurricane Katrina. I was 3 when Katrina hit and I was stuck in a motel in Gulfport. The roof was ripped off due to wind speed. In Bay St Louis there is a 2 mile bridge to Pass Christian and that bridge had to be rebuilt. My family was in their attic and they were stuck and drowned to death because the water filled their house so quickly. Louisiana was damaged but so was south Mississippi.

Saying that Louisiana took the main brunt of katrina while not mentioning that the entire coast of Mississippi was obliterated is certainly misleading. For once its good to see that my country is at the top of watchmojo top 10 list. Unfortunately 5million people had to die to get to the top. shows a lot about our country's care for its people.

Bots Shadowww Technically, they're both tied so one doesn't beat out the other. But, I get your point.

I live over 200 miles inland from NC/SC coast, and lived through Hugo. When Hugo came through my town, it tore my town up. We were without power for 2 weeks. I also went down to Gulfport, MS 18 months after Katrina to help out in the rebuilding. 18 months later and Gulfport didn't even get a direct hit, and it still looked like a bomb went off in some neighborhoods. It looked like a ghost town, especially on the strip at the beach. It was so crazy and very sad. Take it from me, if you've never dealt with a hurricane, you don't want to.

You forgot to mention another deadly and disastrous hurricane, Cyclone David, which occurred in 1979 in Dominican Republic. In addition, I suggest there should be a list of the top 10 deadliest earthquakes and tsunamis in history.

Surprised Hurricane Irene didn't make the list and that Sandy was only #10.
