Bags. Bags of all sizes. You never know when you'll need to move a body and a couple burlap sacks can easily cover up a medium sized creature. Ways to hold small amounts of things like ball bearings, caltrops, even stolen jewelry to hand off to an accomplice before you get caught. Always have bags of all sizes on hand.

Oil is amazing when combined with fire damage that happens in multiple increments, such as Scorching Ray. Every single ray gets +5 damage, which is stronger than any feature that adds your spellcasting modifier to damage. Even a spell like Hex would need to roll near max damage on every d6 in order to surpass it, and they even *stack.* You can have a familiar throw the oil onto your target, and it won't even eat into your action economy at all. With the new Conjure Minor Elementals dealing a separate instance of Fire damage on each hit, you can deal +5 fire damage to *both* Conjure Minor Elementals and Scorching Ray. This item is a massive damage buff that goes overlooked by nearly everyone because no one thinks to use it, but it's 100% worth it to consider for any build that wants to nova the enemy. Wizards and Wildfire Druids are thus the strongest users of the item, but anyone who can deal multiple instances of fire damage in a turn can make this weapon shine, such as Efreeti Genie warlocks who get Scorching Ray and an extra proc of fire damage once a turn when they hit with an attack roll. (Plus an invisible familiar that actually has hands.)

Pitons as doorstops/wedges driven in to keep a door open (or shut). Or as makeshift chisels to deal with grout/stonework to move stones. Very useful.

Question on a similar topic. I was thinking of designing a one shot where a group of orphans, farmers kids and street urchins are going on their first pre-adventure which is to literally earn their first level class skills and spells. So they are allowed simple weapons, the casters can have one cantrip each and they are limited to no more than one gold each worth of equipment in total. In this scenario, instead of the Spear, would allowing them to use a Javelin (1 d 6 thrown rules as written) as a melee weapon (1 d 4 one handed or 1 d 6 two handed) be unbalanced as a Spear would cost the player his entire budget.

I find ropes and harnesses are one of the most useful items in the game for scaling cliffs. Typically parties will have one person who can climb, fly, etc and once they get to the top of the cliff, they can just lower a rope and a harness and pull the rest of the group up to safety. Having a harness removes the risk of falling to your doom on a bad roll.

Before we did the next leg of our campaign (into a mine), I went to the shop and bought 10 flasks of oil, 10 glass bottles, caltrops, simple clothes, and a tinder box or torch (don't remember which). I tore up the simple clothes into rags, filled the bottles with caltrops and oil, and stuffed them with cloth as a wick. At the end of the mine, right as we neared the entrance, we ran into a mountain troll. As a dwarf fighter, I took out a bottle, lit the clothe, and threw it at the troll, injuring it and dousing it as caltrops scattered at its feet; before canonballing into the fucker's chest to knock it prone on top of said caltrops and oil puddle puddle, all the while it burns. Made short work of the bastard

Hey @TheDDLogs, do you know if you are going to be updating the spell cards for 5e 2024? The spell cards you use in your videos are awesome help with new players

❤ the channel! you might have left out a thing about pitons. I believe you're meant to run your climbing rope through the hole in the wide end, to be able to climb as you see hobby climbers do. they're definitely made to stand on if you want, but it may be that the primary use is for rope climbing. in my games, using rope & pitons (once set up by the 1st climber) eliminates the roll entirely, most of the time. pitons alone might turn a Disadvantage check to a regular check. cheers!

while it obviously works, I'm pretty sure they purposely make odd mistakes like this to bait engagement as it happens in too many of their videos but always only ever one or two really minor things.

The thing you over look is carrying the items. As amazing as a ladder or a pole might be, unless you have a bag of holding good luck walking around with a massive pole attached to your back. I know some make it so it can collapse but i would argue that is a more expensive item and needs to be purchased from a specific craftsman.
