Seekers get Magnifying Glass (0) in the Core Set, and Rogues get Switchblade (0). I'm wondering if at some point someone thought these were even close to equivalent!

Daisy w/ Magnifying Glass is so far divorced from Skids with Switchblade in terms of power level. I just cannot imagine they were thought to be parallel at all. Maybe there was a thought "We should make a couple 0 cost hand assets for different classes," but I don't think it went beyond that. As much as I'll meme about bad game design, I trust the developers a little bit more than that.

@@RatherIncoherentI guess it's also very hard to balance cards within the first release. We have to consider in the first game they don't have unlimited budget to perfectly balance cards and Playtest. Also within the first 3scenarios it's also not very clear how strong cards are since you don't spend much time developing the decks. Powerlevels also vary alot in later releases, but in the first one it's forgiveable in my view

I don't seem to like Crack the Case all that much. You really need the biggest lump of money and the start at Crack the case is slow in this regard. I'd rather play my support cards and then start gathering clues rather than the opposite. As the game progresses the value of resource cards drop, so Crack the Case really only shines in expensive decks or when you have allies with expensive decks. Still a very good card, but not an auto include i feel.

Really glad to see another Arkham video from you, have been enjoying your analytical content ever since I found your channel a year ago! That said, I'd like to talk about Occult Lexicon. I've heard a lot of great things about the card, and I agree that it's a strong one, but I've never understood why it's considered to be so out of this world godly, especially in the seeker card pool. I do appreciate the testless damage, especially on harder difficulties, but on standard it never felt that crazy good. I guess it's a matter of playstyle, as I tend to lean into highly specialized decks rather than flexing, but even then the craze about the card seems a bit exaggerated to me. Essentially, with Blood-Rite you're paying 2 resources and 2 cards (and an action) to gain 2 cards and deal 2 damage. This just doesn't sound (and doesn't feel) game-breaking to me, especially considering that there are just 3 copies of Blood-Rite per deck shuffle, which means that it is both limited and - even with all of that seeker draw - somewhat inconsistent, as sometimes you won't have it when you need it. A dedicated fighter with a weapon out routinely does 2 damage with a 0XP deck without paying resources or cards, and with some XP becomes infinitely more effective. And if you want a dedicated fighter in a Seeker class, there are better options with some of the tomes (e.g. Abyssal Tome and Gray's Anatomy in Daisy). Don't get me wrong, this is a great flexing option for fighting, and it always felt good to use it, but I don't see how it can be a top 4 card in the whole pool. It is probably an auto-include if you're flexing, but even then it has drawbacks. You might not want to discard anything from your hand, you might draw a weakness and have to discard more than you drew if you want full 2 damage, you dilute your deck with 2 copies of Blood-Rite and if Blood-Rites are what you're looking for, you still have to find them at the right time. All of this can easily be handled, but it does require that extra effort by potentially making tweaks to a deck or playing differently etc. Dr. Milan and Mag Glass, which are both lower on your list, provide their full effect the moment you play them with zero additional effort or support, and I believe this is a strong argument for placing them higher than the Lexicon.

The big thing with Lexicon is that it's testless damage. If the fighter has a bad turn and things pile up, Seekers are uniquely equipped to just declare that the monsters are now dead. Additionally, it's a 1 card, 0 exp investment to be able to effectively deal with almost any enemy in the game. Sure, the Seeker doesn't want to spend their resources doing that, and outside of Harvey most Seekers can only Blood Rite a couple of times, but the whole point is that this is the best crisis management tool in the game, and you'll only ever need to use it a couple of times. As for finding the other Blood Rites, Blood Rite helps with that, and you're a Seeker. It is extremely normal to be in lategame situations where you have a

@@RatherIncoherent Can't disagree with that, it's still a very very strong card. I guess our perspectives just don't perfectly align, which is obviously fine. It's interesting to compare Blood-Rite to other cards with similar effects, like Mano a Mano (2) and Explosive Ward, both of which deal 2 testless damage. As expected, the yellow card is generally more broadly useful and/or straight up better. Mano a Mano doesn't cost anything, but requires 2XP and a narrow window of availability, and Explosive Ward can in theory deal more than 2 damage with a lot of extra setup, but reqires your arcance slots to be empty and can't target Elite enemies. I think it shows that the design team has been very careful in allowing other classes to deal testless damage by putting a lot of restrictions on respective cards, and yet the class that is meant to struggle with enemy management enjoys the most effective and the least restrictive testless damage option. So yeah, comparing the Lexicon to cards that offer the same effect really shows why the card is so great.

Surprised you haven’t mentioned empirical hypothesis. Fast on demand draw at level 0 that takes no slots and rewards you for doing what you do anyway is crazy strong

I originally had like 6 honorable mentions and it was one of them. Slotless draw 1 every turn for 2 is almost what it is, and that's very, very good. I agree. It somehow consistently doesn't impress me as much as it should. It is similar to Deep Knowledge vs Preposterous Sketches, I guess? 2 resources is a pretty low cost, but it matters a lot all the same. So when I think "This is Deep Knowledge after 3 turns a lot of the time," the 2 resources are a harsher cost than those curse tokens were. Don't get me wrong, it's very, very good. It's also in a class with Deep Knowledge, PmP + Perception, Rook, and numerous other options. It's lack of a spotlight is just Seeker suffering from success more than anything else.
