Checo’s first win was amazing, started last after lap 1 when he crashed with Charles. Then: -Overtook the guy that took his seat (vettel) -Overtook his teammate Stroll despite asking for a swap and his team going radio silent -Overtook Ocon his previous teammate -Overtook Albon (and possibly helped his case for the Redbull seat). He didn’t have a ride at that point for next year, so he was driving literally as if it was his last race. Will remember the commentary on this race forever. “I want your place now and I want your car next year” -when Checo overtook Albon “Imagine how Perez felt about that, the guy that nicked his job for next year. He just put some manners on him” - when Checo overtook Sebastian Vettel

After his stellar 2012 season, and unfairly being made the fall guy by McLaren in 2013, from there to 2019 he looked like a solid midfield driver, able to eek out the tyres to get the odd podium. But the RP20, the 2020 Racing Point, gave him the chance to occasionally compete for a win. In a way, the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix is a metaphor for his career, started in the top 4, knocked back to last, fought through the field and helped slightly with Mercedes' tyre blunders, he scored a win at his 190th attempt

Still remember the absolute elation and relief of seeing Mark Webber pick up his first win. He ended up with 9 and almost a drivers title, but there was a very long period where it looked like he may never land a single victory.

@@p_nilly Isn't it better that you can be penalised without it costing you everything you worked for in the race?
@p_nilly
2 жыл бұрын
@@mannmctrash Unfortunately the 5 and 10 second time penalties are just not enough. The purpose of the drive thru was more to send you to the back of the pack since you had to serve it within 3 laps... while these time penalties allow you to drive off into the distance if you have a fast car without it really hurting you. For example, let's take Hamilton at Silverstone. If he'd gotten a drive thru penalty instead of his 10 seconds, he would have been sent all the way to the back and he'd be with Perez. Would he have won the race from the back? Extremely unlikely. But because he had a time penalty, he was able to build a massive gap to the pack behind so that it never really made much of a difference in the end when he served the penalty at his pitstop. The drive-thru penalty being the standard penalty would also curb reckless driving. Would Max Verstappen be as willing to be right on the limit with his moves? I wouldn't think so

Poor Hülkenberg though. 181 starts, and not even a single podium. And it's not like he's an awful driver, he just never had the machinery to consistently compete, and on the rare occasions he had the chance, he got unlucky.
