100% agree and have snagged this exact item in several "start at 5th level with 1 uncommon or rare magic item" campaigns as well. I've gone vengeance pally and valor bard with fantastic success. That sword nukes, especially at lower levels. Hell, I'll take it a step further. I have a level 15 and level 11 (a battle master fighter and the above bard) who have yet to find anything worth giving up their flame tongues for. I am quite literally using a flame tongue weapon on every currently active character I play.

Also I’d have to argue with you about your number 1 weapon. My weapon would be Blackrazer from tales from the yawning portal adventure white plume mountain, like wave and whelm. Blackrazer is a +3 greatsword. It can cast haste on the wielder and it concentrates on it. When you kill something with it, it gives you temp hp equal to the target’s maximum hp. So kill a fire giant you get 234 temp hp. That sounds amazing on a tank type character. You can also detect the presence of tiny or larger creatures within 60’ of you that aren’t constructs or undead. But yes if you attack an undead you take damage and the undead gets healed a little but that’s a pretty decent trade off with everything else.
@crazyscotsman9327

Honestly I agree, Blackrazor is incredibly strong. Especially for a bear totem barbarian (or a Berserker fucking 4 attacks during his actions and a chance for five a round?) Those temp hp is amazing making you just that much stronger. It is easily one of the most underrated weapons an adventurer can have. Also big whoop can't use it against Undead? Who cares store Blackrazor pull out a normal or a +3 Greatsword and use that until you get past the walking corpses.

Just thinking about Greatswords, in the first Baldur's Gate videogame, there was an amazing Greatsword named "Spider's Bane". In addition to being a +2 GS, it also provided the wielder the benefits of the "Freedom of Movement" spell, which was INCREDIBLELY useful throughout the entire game. My Ranger and/or my Paladin never left home without it, heh. Sadly, when you transitioned your PC into BG2, you lost all your gear and though there were a LOT of unique and powerful swords in BG2, Spider's Bane never reappeared. I loved that sword so much that as a DM, I recreated it for a number of games I ran (setting up cool quests to get it) and every Player that got it, quickly grew to love it as well. A simple but extremely effective buff that I'd suggest other DMs toss into their games, especially if you toss in the appropriate baddies (i.e. Drow !) to make it shine. Their Players will truly appreciate it! :)
@echedp8903

You forgot Blackrazor. If it brings a creature to 0 health you get it max hit points as temp hit. Imagine killing something and getting like 255 health. While you have this health, and remember you will get it again every time you kill something you have advantage on attack rolls, ability checks and saving throws. It also makes it so you can't be frightened or charmed and that you are aware of all creatures around you, which means nothing can ever get surprise on you. AND it can cast haste. That's a LOT. Now it does harm you if you hit undead with it and most of its powers don't work against undead, but given the pure amount of life this can give you it's pretty bonkers.

"If you have it as a longsword for some reason" implies that it's not better to use longswords for some builds compared to greatswords. As someone who values defense over damage in many cases, especially as the shield for the rest of the party (paladin/fighter), I can safely say that a longsword being a one-handed weapon and allowing you to use a shield alongside it is the *primary* reason to use a longsword over anything else. I don't know of any one-handed weapons that deal more than 1d8 damage (assuming you aren't using their Versatile property), and with the Dueling fighting style you may as well just be getting the damage of Versatile while using it one-handed and still having a shield accessible. For raw damage output, yes, greatsword is one of the best weapons in the base game, but 1d8+2 damage (because of Dueling) has a very close average damage of 6.5 while allowing for higher defensive stats. In fact, having just done the math there, Dueling one-handed with a shield is strictly *better* than using the same weapon Versatile even for just damage output alone. Unless you have something else boosting when you use a weapon with two hands, the average Versatile damage is 5.5 (1d10) while the average Dueling damage for the same weapon is 6.5 (1d8 has average of 4.5, but you get guaranteed +2 damage on top of it). Essentially, what I'm trying to say is that it's fairly easy to build for longsword instead of greatsword. You do lose out on things like Great Weapon Fighting and have slightly lower average damage, but you make up for it with higher AC which tends to be more important for paladins and fighters. The only time I'd say a greatsword is *strictly* better than a longsword is if you're playing a barbarian or have some other thing that really amplifies your two-handed weapon in a similar vein to what Dueling gives for one-handed. I know there's a two-handed fighting style but I forget exactly what it does off the top of my head; that stacked with Great Weapon Fighting would definitely push the damage value way higher for two-handed, but that's just a different build. A longsword is pretty objectively the strongest weapon possible for a one-handed strength fighter. EDIT: OK, so I just looked it up. Great Weapon Fighting is indeed strong, making your average damage roll on a d6 roughly 4 instead of 3.5, and for the 1d12 weapons it gives you roughly 7 average damage instead of 6.5 (For the sake of easier math, I'm taking the average removing 1 and 2 and averaging that with the normal average). You're dealing 8 average damage with a greatsword ignoring feats as opposed to 6.5 average damage with a longsword one-handed with Dueling. The average damage difference is small enough that I still think a Dueling longsword setup is just as viable as a pure greatsword damage build, especially if you know your role in the party is to be the wall the enemies have to get past rather than the pure DPS like a barbarian or casters. More AC means better chance to stay active in combat for longer. Fighters don't have barbarian's face-tanking capacity and really rely on their AC much more.

@@zachwright7374 lol, can't argue with that logic. Big sword good, yes. XD Rest of the comment is a bit long here, so tl;dr: longswords are viable and I was mathematically reacting to the video making a claim that they aren't. I'm more talking on a mechanical level, though. Mechanically, longswords are still just as viable as greatswords outside of the "but big sword cool" factor that matters more for Barbarians. Sword/shield setups matter a lot for Fighter and Paladin, and a bit for Ranger as well. Basically any class that gets Fighting Styles, longswords are generally as good if not better than a greatsword. I was more reacting to a specific line in the video that almost seems to think longswords are worthless, and proving why that isn't true mathematically.

Great passive buffs, damage output is lacking. Craftable. Bad for hunting undead.

@@Casey0706 According to Xanatar's Guide to Everything, yes. A year of down time and a conversation with a CR 17 creature is the biggest issue. The only requirement is skill proficiency in Arcana and Smith tools. Given that a Commoner could make a Blackrazor every year.

Blackrazor does not deal that much damage surprisingly. Most of it is a buff for the user.

You made a pretty big mistake with the Flame Tongue. It isn't actually as good as Relic or Legendary weapons. Yes. It deals 4d6 damage, but that can not be assumed. It doesn't deal 4d6 magical slashing damage but 2d6 slashing and 2d6 fire damage. This is important because Fire is the most resisted elemental damage type in the game. If you fight something like Fiends, Fire Giants or any Fire based enemy your weapon is useless in terms of extra damage. EDIT: Also. Unlike a +3 weapon it gains to bonus to actually hitting the enemy. A hit deals infinitely more damage than a miss. It is a pretty big mistake to assume a Flame Tongue is the same as a +3 weapon when it is easier to hit with a +3 weapon. Yes. The Flame Tongue is good, but it isn't THAT good. It has serious flaws that can make it worthless against certain types of enemies.

Got the moonblade as the 'boss killer' heirloom item at the end of the campaign. DM was pissed because he rolled maximum weapon features, so I could essentially overkill anything. I asked him "what does it do?" after attuning to it and he gave me a fuckin printed piece of paper.

On a campaign i was watching and recording, to pratical reasons of the group, the elven Eldritch Knight of the party, who had tons of lore associated with her family, got a moonblade 6 months( time of adventure) before the final battle(that was a massive siege that was about to happen in her homecountry). The DM made a really good tale of her attempts to fully harness the sword power, and she unlocked its features one by one. Then, at the final battle, she unlocked the Vorpal ability, and, for the awe of the party members, scored a full 20 crit against the boss(who was a homebrewed legendary warrior of sorts) and then the battle ended. It was really epic
