I was managing a game store at the time this came out. I bought the very first copy that came in the store, along with a Dual Shock. I took it home after work and started playing right away. At like 2 in the morning, my roommate knocked on my door and I realized that I had missed dinner entirely and was dehydrated. We went out for food, and it was like culture shock. I wanted to go back into the game world, not be in the real one. I have never before or since had a game affect me that way. Speaks volumes to just how awesome it truly is.

@@Rad-Dude63andathird , Ah, hadn't recalled the stereo/mono setting in the MGS menu here. It's been a while .... Back since my nephew had stayed with us (just before he embarked into his MGS4) during which time while here, there was a full play through of MGS1 a la a typical 90s kid's late night experience finished off with popcorn, Cheetohs, some Nibs licorice and a soda while we traded of the controller when eventually finishing MGS1 in front of my old, still beautifully imaging 32-inch CRT TV here as only CRTs could - including some lightgun gaming 😉😄👍.... Anywho, as per my constraint before we moved on to MGS 3 - which is what he _really, very much_ wanted to play, I told him it had to be at least MGS1, first, then on to MGS3. Hah! 😁 Forgot how MGS1 blew his mind - him asking and then repeatedly exercising his reappraisal mechanism about the age of the game versus what it offered. 😁😉 Good times including what little time was left to enjoy some lightgun controllers in Area 51, Elemental Gearbolt, Time Crisis: Project Titan, Gunfighter: The Legend of Jesse James, one of the Point Blank titles and one of the PS2 Time Crisis titles - 🤔 Crisis Zone, IIRC... Wow, that flashed back a whole lot of good memories. 👍😄 I should make room to set up a second CRT TV and pull out the 2nd PS2 for 2-player, twin-screen on Time Crisis 2 and 3 and have him over again. 🤯😁😉 Dunno if he ever got into MGS3 yet so I'll just loan him that if it's not available via his services. ✌🖖

There is a third option to beat Mantis: if you die 4 times, you can shoot at the two statues, once in the Mantis' office, once they are destroyed, then Mantis won't be able to read your movements. When you fight against Vulcan Raven, Rations can freeze, but if you go to the bathroom, you can defrost them in the hand dryer. If the guards spot you more than 10 times, the Pal Key will be at the bottom of the water, if they only do it less than 10 times, a rat will eat it. Finally, a short story: once, my brother was playing against Vulcan Raven, and I was watching him. When you meet Raven at the Warehouse, he freezes Snake with some kind on super natural power. I swear in the actual gameplay, Raven did the same thing. My brother couldn't move Snake. We never saw that ever again. I don't know if actually was part of the battle, or if my disc was broken. Which makes your comment about how games these days have far less in them at launch, even more depressing. I actually feel very bad for today’s gamer. One thing I missed for the longest time was the "secret" codec call and cut scene that explains how Liquid survived the Hind D crashing. It's in the snow field, immediately after the 2nd fight with Sniper Wolf. Simply hug the wall along the far right of the area and the camera will pan out further to the mountainside. Here you will see an open parachute laid out that Liquid used to escape the Hind D as it was falling from the sky. I've been playing the PS1 Japanese Integral version lately, such a shame we never got it. Although, I'm pretty sure the western PC port of it is based on Integral. At the very least, I know the PC version has that extra first person mode available.

Great video about a great game! It could be argued that MGS, Policenauts AND Snatcher exist in the same universe, as in Snatcher Harry the engineer states that he built Metal Gear Mark 2 after the Metal Gear menace of the late 20th century. You also meet the informer "Napoleon" in that game who has severe allergies, then in Policenauts you hear him sneezing in the waiting room of the hospital then calling out to Jonathan because he thinks it's Gillian Seed. A cameo, obviously, but still cool. Meryl in Policenauts even mentions her activities in the military, so even though the ages and dates don't match up, it could well be the same person. Or a clone. Haha
@niazesk5382
4 жыл бұрын
Yup, 'em connections are hard to combine. I personally can't understand two major plot holes. The first one is about Meryl in both MGS and Policenauts. Sinse Meryl was first introduced in Policenauts before MGS1 came out and made several plot extensions from MG1 and MG2 you could think it's the same character. And if the answer to why she looks almost the same after so many years passed (MGS1 in 2005 and Policenauts in 2040) may be Nanomachines (the only thing that explains everything after MGS4 came out LOL), I actually made an interesting theory. What if Meryl from Policenauts isn't the same Meryl from MGS but her relative or even daughter? I once thought she couldn't live happily with Johnny and got divorced, but MGWiki says Meryl's age from Policenauts is 24. And since MGS4 took place in 2014 it's possible that Meryl from Policenauts was born in 2016, two years after MGS4's ending. So I guess she may be called Meryl Jr., I dunno. ^_^\/ 'kay then, this one might be clear. HOWEVER. The second plot hole is WAY too murky. It's about Dr. Pettrovich-Madnar from MG1 and MG2. Accroding to Snatcher's Act, 3 he switched from nuclear development to development of bioroids or snatchers between MG1 and MG2 (the year was 1996 if I'm right, don't remember well). AND after that massive explosion that was mentioned in Snatcher's intro he decided to return back to nuclear development by making Metal Gear D. And later on in Act 3 it's shown that Dr. Pettrovich-Madnar's life was sustained by artificial means and he died in the end. THAT means DR. Pettrovich-Madnar is the only character from MGS who lived probably from MGS3 to Snatcher! Even if he spent his last years in capsule. Anyway, in MG2 there's an event where Solid Snake has to fight Dr. Pettrovich-Madnar who clung to his back and you HAVE TO use Nikita missiles to defeat Pettrovich-Madnar. The thing is Dr. Pettrovich-Madnar is not only appears in Snatcher, but also mentioned in MGS4 where he is said to helped Raiden and gave "Naomi" and Sunny equipment for his artificial blood cleaning. THEN HOW COME HE SURVIVED THAT FREAKING MISSILE ATTACK FROM SOLID SNAKE IN MG2 AND ESCAPED ZANZIBARLAND?????????? There is no answer AT ALL. Not even MGWiki has it. He just simply survived that encounter and later on got evacuated from Zanzibarland with his daughter (also it's strange that in Snatcher he has a son and his daughter never mentioned in that game; his surname in Snatcher is also written as "Modnar" instead of "Madnar"). So this is the only major plot hole that's been bothering me all that time and I guess it'll never be corrected. Oh well.

I can't believe I forgot about some of these. I been playing it again on my old PS2. I remember being so excited to play this game when I got home from school. I was in 6th grade and most of the kids were playing it as well. It made for good conversation the next day at lunch. As we all progressed the game at different paces. If one of my friends was stuck at a boss battle we gave each other advice on beating them and vice versa. The content was so immersive that all my friends had different codec calls to talk about. Then of my friends Mark was the type to hunt for glitches and hidden things. He was the one that kept us up to speed on some of odd things in the game. He also was the only one of us that had a Gameshark. So he was like the god of video games back then lol. I remember us looking up codes during computer class for him to try on games. We thought that was the shit back then and that we were really doing something. Im suprised he never became a game coder or developer. What made this game so great is it always seemed to evolve during replays. This is why I have played it over and over througout the years. I think my first play through took me over 3 weeks to beat it. That was playing 2-3 hours every afternoon. Its crazy to think how long the game can last yet you still miss things in it. Thanks to these newer games with pixelated graphics I can now share this treasure of a game with my nieces. They like playability and storylines better than graphics. When I was a kid it we were more concened about graphics and not the actual plot of the games. I apperciate this video and look forward to trying out a few of those glitches.

Did anyone mention yet that there's a reference to the David Lynch film 'Blue Velvet' with the Sniper Wolf's dialogue? She says "Well I'm going to send you a love letter, my dear. Do you know what that is? It's a bullet straight from my gun to your heart." That's essentially the same quote that Dennis Hopper's character threatens Kyle MacLachlan's character with. Here's a link to that scene: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pIOdmmt3e6x6gaw Kojima is definitely a big fan of David Lynch, there's some other references to his films and the show Twin Peaks sprinkled throughout his games.

@@tcrpgfan No shit, he fucking loves movies. Why are you even questioning the act of giving someone a little information to look into if they choose to look? He brought it back to my attention mentioning Lynch, and I figured he didn't want a shitty comment lecture. What does it matter?

I'm 38 years old, and I have never missed work to play a video game, but back in early 1999 I skipped a day of school because I had just gotten a PS1 with Metal Gear Solid. I told my mother that morning that I was feeling sick. I think she knew I just wanted to play the game but went with it anyway. Thanks, mom.

I was about 13 or 14 years old in the late 1990's and this game was collecting dust on my friend's shelf in his bedroom - he had never really played it. Anyway, I borrowed it, and I was blown away. It felt like I was playing in a hollywood movie. Even back then I was maturely aware of how much care and love had gone into this game. It's a masterpiece. Even to this day, people are discovering new things about it. I feel lucky to have been able to appreciate and experience this game when it's graphics were state-of-the-art. Kids of this generation will never be able to appreciate it in the same way we did back in my day.

Awesome. I thought i knew everything there was to know about this game but a couple surprised me like the weapons glitch, alternative Ocelot cutscene and the Women's bathroom dialogue. The picture of Snake with eyes i thought was from an early screenshot of the PC port, due to the extra power they wanted to improve the character models but with still no way to animate them, they stuck to the familiar face textures also for the consistency of the art style like you mentioned. Btw, that picture of Snake from MGS2 in the bottom right at 9:05, where was this from? There's gotta be no freaking way that's in the game's files?

I love those details in Kojima games. Not necessarily important but it makes it more real. I had such strong emotions playing Metal Gear Solid, felt so bad to what happened to Meryl in my first playthrough... It's too bad that you didn't show everything you talked about. It's really frustrating not to get all the footages... PS: Policenauts is amazing. Great great game. Probably my favorite from Kojima and definitely top 10 of all time.

A really cool codec call you missed, is calling Campbell after losing to Psycho Mantis. If you don’t switch your controller into the player 2 port you’ll get the option to break the statues in the room that reveal Psycho Mantis true identity to himself. Making it possible for you to fight him without changing controller ports. Hideo thought of everything, I’m convinced.
