With the abdication, his mother can give King Frederik tips about different situations that arise. This is a graceful way to transfer power from Queen to King.

I am Danish born but now in 🇨🇦. It was wonderful to see the proclamation. The Danes are very minimalistic which shows in the proclamation ceremony. If you’re ever in Denmark you’ll notice the minimalistic approach. It’s so refreshing not to have stuff and be cluttered. Try to go to Copenhagen. You will love it especially in the summer! It’s a great city to walk around in. Incredible history. Queen Margarethe’s secret meetings of her then fiancé in London was really interesting. She was studying architecture! Riding the tube to meet in secret at Harrods! Not recognized by the public which must have been refreshing. Although the Danish royals wander around Copenhagen shopping and living life and the public doesn’t make a big show of it. There’s the minimalistic approach again!

Yes, our Royals used to be able to wander around alone in Copenhagen. However, sadly this is no longer possible due to the threat from crazies and terrorists. Constantly having to have bodyguards is a heavy toll on anybody. When the King was young he rebelled against this, even trying to evade his bodyguards and strike out on his own. The guards are highly trained policemen and they keep a discreet distance, but are always there to step in if needed. The kids go to public schools, and unfortunately they always have to have a guard with them. This focus is only going to get worse now that the parents are the monarchs.

One correction: There has not been a voluntary abdication since 1146, and he died shortly after his abdication. Denmark was a Civil War then, so it could not have been an easy task to be King then. The last involuntary abdication however, was King Christian the II in 1523, and he had to give up the throne to his uncle, King Frederik the I. Brittany, love love love your channel and your coverage is on point as usual. Can't wait to follow your coverage more of my royal family. What is notable is the color symbolism. Queen Mary and Princess Isabella are wearing the Danish colors, but combined with Josephine's coat, it also becomes the colors of the Australian flag. Nice nod to both countries. Queen Margrethe said "Gud bevare Kongen". She usually ends her New Years Eve speeches with "Gud bevare Danmark", which is more translated to "God preserve Denmark", not save. And my assumption is the same meaning behind it is the same with her words about the King. Very emotional day. Not just for the royals, but the Danes as well. I teared up many times during the day. Both out of happiness but also sad because it was the end of an era. I do have confidence however, that he will lift the task the best way possible. Queen Margrethe wouldn't have abdicated, if he wasn't ready.

Britney, I don’t know if you have given this thought but I think the death of QEII hit her harder than people realized. She saw QEII doing her royal duties to the very end instead of ever having a life of her own and Charles was so old going to the throne it had an effect on her that made her rethink everything. Unlike QEII she is a creative, quirky and extremely educated woman so she had so many things outside of her role that interest her. I don’t think she wanted to end up that lone tiny figure. In my opinion that is what started this whole mindset. What do you and other subs think?
@julianneheindorf5757
8 ай бұрын
Interesting theory. I think as well that King Frederik’s age may have played a role in her thinking. But I believe the main reason for her decision to step down is due to her health. She had extensive surgery on her back in February of 2023 and Frederik during that time took over most of her functions. She is not able anymore to do the work and her chores as Queen as she sees fit and thus decided to step down. But it was obviously not an easy decision to make. She has always said that she would stay on her perch until she dropped. Her move was also totally unprecedented. No Danish monarch has voluntarily abdicated the throne since King Erik Lam in 1146 AD. She may also have gotten some inspiration from the Dutch monarchy where her counterpart, Queen Beatrix abdicated and handed the throne to her son, King Willhelm-Alexander. The Dutch have a tradition for such handovers. Her grandmother, Queen Wilhelmina abdicated leaving the throne to her daughter, Queen Julianna who did the same when she handed the reins to Queen Beatrix. Unlike the Dutch queens who change their titles to Princess, I’m glad our Queen chose to retain her title of Queen. It won’t cause any problems with two Queens. She will be the “Queen mom” or the “dowager Queen”.

@@RoyalNewsNetwork, no, she is longer the reigning monarch, but I can’t imagine any Dane, unless it’s her family or close friends, addressing her in any way other than: Your Majesty…or in Danish: Deres Majestæt… in Danish, you initially address the Queen with Your Majesty, then during any further conversation you address her mostly in the third person. F.ex. What does the Queen think of our weather today? In Danish, we also have a formal and informal way of addressing people: De (formal) and du (informal). Much like the French Vous/tu or the German Sie/du. The formal way of addressing someone has almost gone out the window. Today, pretty much only the Royals are addressed by the use of the formal De, particularly the Queen. The younger royals seem a bit more relaxed about it, but it depends on the formality of the situation as well. Young people in general don’t know how to properly use the formal way of addressing people. During my Danish grandmother’s lifetime, it was unthinkable to address anyone with the informal “du” unless it were family members, very close friends or children under a certain age. It used to baffle my American mom that people could be friends for years and still keep using the formal “De” when addressing each other. I never use “De” and find it very odd when someone, usually much younger, uses it with me attempting to be very polite.

I remember that in your livestream (thank you for all your work, by the way), I wrote that I was literally crying at the moment. And yes, I was. It was an emotional event, after all. The Scandinavian royals, especially the Danish Royal Family, are my favorite of all royal families, and to have the opportunity to watch how history is written as Queen Margrethe abdicated in favor of her son is something I will never forget.

This was such a great video with the highlights of the Danish Proclamation! Love when you feature the Scandinavian (and the other European) Royals! CP Christian's face when he sees his grandmother cry, his chin goes up and as you said, it looked like he really wanted to run after her, it was lovely. Queen Margrethe's face when she says "Gud Bevare Kongen" just breaks my heart. It was bittersweet. King Frederik looks so lovingly at Queen Mary, it was overall a great day! And to see Queen Margrethe today together with the new King and Queen and a smiling Prince Joachim felt really good. So nice to see them all together, the first day!

@@RosiesCottageBlog Brittany is continuing to mention, and emphasise rumours of an alleged affair. An affair that didn’t happen, and which the involved lady has refuted! On top of that, she has later confirmed that she leaked the story because she wanted to make her ex-husband, jealous. King Frederick is very much in love with his wife! You can see it whenever you meet them in Copenhagen or around the country. There is NO chance that he would EVER cheat on her. NO chance at all, and I appalled that a KZitemr like Brittany, who normally reports correctly, keeps on bringing a sleazy rumour forward. Even now, six months after his visit to Madrid. NO ONE knows what happened at that apartment!! No one except the two people who were there and I don’t care how many photographers who can present photos of him walking from the apartment in the morning! It’s simply not true! King. Frederick is a very intelligent man - every Dane can tell you that, and do you honestly think that he would be accompanying this lady in broad daylight, if there had been an affair????

@@LadyEileen I think it's lovely that you're so loyal to your King, I really do, but in defence of Brittany, as I said, she's only ever said what has been reported. You're exactly right, no one knows what happened, but one thing is for sure though, even if they spent the night innocently playing chess, it was wrong for him to be there. He's a married man who holds a high public office. His actions left him open to gossip, true or not doesn't really matter, because either way it resulted in his wife being embarrassed in the worlds media. It was an awful thing to happen to such a sweet lady. As I said @frureeslev, I think it's lovely that you're so loyal to your King. Brittany is a lovely, sweet, kind person and I'm sure didn't mean any offence. I'm sure she'll take your comments seriously and be really hurt that she might have caused any upset. It's nice to meet you and congratulations on your new King and Queen. I loved watching the proclamation, it was very emotional (I cried a little.) Have a great week, best wishes.

I think King Frederik and Queen Mary looked so happy and united, it was gorgeous. Very emotional watching Queen Magrethe saying God save the King and leave the room....you cannot help but feel how emotional this moment would be for her to handover to her son ❤ Prince Christian looks so handsome like his paternal grandfather, and I love that he is so aware of the emotions of those around him and that he shows a keen awareness of everyone around him....makings of a great prince and future King ❤

I imagine it must be a huge relief for the new King to not be pulled between wanting to fulfill his destiny yet knowing that comes at the cost of losing his mom. I recall, then Prince Charles, reflecting on the same feelings. No doubt, today is bittersweet for the Queen, but they are also free to feel joyous.

As a Dane, I think her emotions were more so because she was just so *proud* to have been able to witness him ascend the throne. Please remember that she didn't get that. Her father was dead on the same day that she ascended her throne, and it must have been so elating for her to be alive to see him take over.

From a Dutch perspective: I guess we're so down to earth that we've had at least three voluntary abdications: King Willem-Alexander's mother, grandmother and great-grandmother abdicated. It makes sense to me: retire like 'regular' people do and spend time with your (grand)children and other family or friends. Furthermore, a new monarch can still ask their predecessor for advice if needs be. It's a rather practical approach.

I hope the Queen already did the required introduction so she can now take a well deserved holiday. No doubt a place will be carved out for her once her healing improves. It's impossible to recover from spinal surgery in a matter of only a few weeks. Especially working full time. Prince Christian needed a vest with that jacket. His response to help his grandmother just reflects his tenderness and love for her. No one should be throwing a 13 year old under the bus. That day required maturity and now more reflective choices on her part. I hope the light stays on the older siblings so she can find her place without scrutiny by press.

The moment Queen Margrethe says "Gud Bevare Kongen".... it has me in tears every time... I am practically sobbing honestly. Yes, it is bittersweet but I also think in some way she was very honored and humbled to see her son sit as head of the Council for the first time, as King of Denmark and no longer as Crown Prince, which now falls to Christian, must have made her very emotional because in theory she wouldn't have witnessed this - if she stuck to traditions. I didn't physically go in to Christiansborg because I am not fond of huge crowds.. I am tripping every time I run Royal Run because we are packed in those small streets before we get to run but my Mother and Sister went. I watched in with my grandmother on TV and noticed how happy Queen Margrethe looked in the carriage while going through the streets towards the castle. I can imagine she is relieved because I am most certainly convinced she wanted Frederik to have a better transition than her or even Charles had. Normally a Danish proclamation comes on the heals (within 24 hours) of the previous monarch's death. So having to stand there and both in grief but also "smile" to your countrymen must be so horrible and difficult. She wanted to spare Frederik that and who knows... maybe Margrethe has started a new tradition :) cause why can't it be a joyous occasion rather than a sorrow filled one? If she was afraid that Frederik wasn't as popular as she is, I think the collected 300k people in the streets must've show cased it. Not including all the ones watching! We love our Queen and we love our new King & Queen just as much. Mary is great for him - and I honestly don't believe the "allegations" people are making of him. The dude makes lovey eyes at his wife, just like I do when I see a kanelsnegl... and he wears his emotions on his sleeves.... Frederik may be a badass but he is as equally emotional. His wedding... tears all over the place, as well as on the balcony. We like to call him "tudeprins" - lovingly meant ;) and they also have a bunch of wonderful children. Christian will do just as wonderfully when it is his time. All the attention he had on his grandmother says it all. A fun fact: Margrethe was watching the last guard shift (of her reign) from her window at her residence, which she is known to do often.
