I miss Powerfunctions already. I have some of the new Control+ sets, (Off-roader, Volvo dump truck and Liebherr),but I am uninspired to use them since there is no "manual override" ability so long as the functions are connected to the motor. @Love made in Japan You can already upload custom programs over bluetooth, it's called pybricks (currently in beta). There is also a lot of libraries available for the lego wireless protocol and all you need is a bt4 stick and you can do anything with it. I bought the liebherr for €330 and having a blast with the hubs and motors. I'd be pissed if I bought it in 2019, but it's just great in 2020 and beyond.
@Unbrickme

The powered up hubs are nothing like mindstorms ev3 or even the new spike prime hub. Those hubs have internal memory, the powered up hubs don’t. This is a major flaw when it comes to complex code. I tried coding a self balancing Segway robot with powered up and because the data has to be constantly sent back and forth between the phone and hub, my phone overheated and the powered up app crashed. I’m able to make very complex code with lego mindstorms but powered up is just very limiting for that.
@bami2
3 жыл бұрын
@@Unbrickme But the technic hubs have both flash storage for firmware as well as RAM for the current state (like having virtual ports assigned to synchronized motors, the LED color etc) that gets cleared once you power it down. With pybricks you replace the powered up firmware with a tiny python environment, to which you can send scripts that then gets executed autonomously on the hub while it's powered. You can even write the script to the firmware and it will persist over power downs. It doesn't change the bootloader so if you want to go back to the powered up app, all you have to do is connect it through there and it will replace the pybricks firmware with the official one.
@Unbrickme

The flash storage that the hub has is very little and still isn’t gonna be sufficient for large code

I appreciate the thought put into the choices, I personally think however that putting the osprey at the top of the list for a price that was not retail price is unfair. All of the other sets were graded based on the retail price that LEGO sold them at, not at the retail price that they might be found at on a different market today. Yes the osprey is kind of a weird set having been sold at super minimalist prices when it was canceled, but it seems off for this video. This is just my slightly critical/feedback side coming out, I still really like your videos and how you present them.

7:35 I understand how pissed you are at the set’s price. I’m a LEGO Technic would-be collector collecting old LEGO Technic sets. I currently own at least 3 LEGO Technic retired sets. The 42084 Hook Loader of 2018, the 42093 Corvette, and the 42122 Jeep Wrangler. They are all retired sets in LEGO Technic. I feel kind of sad that we owned at least 10 retired sets. One of them was a LEGO Lord of the Rings ship and it will sell around $1000 to $2000 dollars on EBay if you put it in sale. I disassembled it for pieces and it’s broken up to this point because we moved 3 houses ever since we bought that set. It doesn’t survive very well and has been collecting dust ever since. Anyways, I am planning on getting a new sealed copy of the 8299 LEGO Technic Pneumatic Submarine. It is sealed and brand new and only retails for $190.

dude, price per piece and gearboxes are not the absolute indicators to judge a set...tow truck and top gear car apart, i pretty much disagree with this chart. where is for example the limited edition 9398? telehandler has always been around 20 unlike you mentioned and it actually was a good deal, and the osprey shouldn't even be considered in my opinion... so 42099 is the winner of your chart while being a goldmine of pieces for every vehicle builder, plus an excellent starter set...i'm not saying it's cheap, but despite having control+ (which notoriously raise the price tags in a ridiculous way), every single remaining piece is pure gold: the unique planetary hubs with reinforced cv joints alone are a dream come true...then awesome wheels, independent suspension components, big turntables, panels and also the minor things like useful connectors and curved cylinders which come all in sober black and not in clowny colors like 42070, which costs still a good 50 more...for me it's one of the most generous technic sets of the last years, of course better find it with some heavy discount...like pretty much all sets 😅 but the greatest robberies i've seen are not technic...what about the panama channel, the star wars destroyer, the renault licensed cars........?

Every lego/technic model is overpriced. You are buying $20 worth of plastic (including production costs) and paying $200-300 for it with those big sets. Designer work? Let's be generous and say that each set costs $20K to design, and spread that over thousands of boxes sold - you are looking at a few dollars per box. The rest? It's profits. You are grossly overpaying for every lego set, it's a luxury toy. So complaining that on some sets they upcharge you 3000% instead of normal 2500% is a bit silly, don't you think? And to be fair, I don't see any problem with luxury items. I just don't think that talking about something being overpriced really works in that context.

I bought my silver champion on sale at a store when it was being discontinued. I absolutely love the set and I have built it abut 5 times now. It was out during the transition era when studded bricks were being phased out So the build techniques are very unique requiring a lot of half thick beams. Also the inboard shocks was really ingenious and the the wheel hubs are built using basic parts instead of a specialized piece. The B model is great and so is the Nethaniel Kupers c model.
Top 10? Lego Technic is overprized for at least the last 7 years. But in order of the fact, that we had 2020 when you relased the video, there were many more horrible Technic sets, with less functionality and way more overprized. Man sets you included are great sets, if you set the price 30€ down.

Can someone please explain what's the point of having a gearbox on a lego set? It's not like you could drive it like a real car. Is it just for the sake or complexity or there are some practical reasons?
@Unbrickme
3 жыл бұрын
There's a practical reason. Distribution gearbox: Using just one knob you can control multiple functions, and subsequently that makes the set easily motor upgradeable with power functions, since you need to connect the motor to only one input. For speed transmission gearboxes in RC sets: you can easily change between more torque or more speed, perfect for off roaders!
@galizakeithd.2579

I don’t know much about technic??? Ok, I’ve been a hardcore technic fan since 2009 and I actively purchase old sets. I even have the original car chassis set from 1977 I think, could’ve been 1978. I have the 42100 set too and I think it’s just a cheaper version of the 8043. For the price of 450$, technic needs to offer something the older audience would appreciate more. Like, some sort of extremely advanced mechanisms or gearboxes or just something! 42100 is extremely basic, with one motor per one function

Sam 05 you do realize that technic is all about complex, revolutionary, and insane mechanisms. It does NOT matter that the 42100 is bigger. The 8043 has much more complex and revolutionary mechanisms. A fully motorized gearbox. 2 axle independent motion transferred through one turn table. And so much more! 42100 offeres none of that. Just some basic one motor per function. That isn’t true lego technic. That isn’t the very essence of lego technic. The 8043, the Bugatti, the 8880 and much more all represent the very soul of lego technic. Authenticity, functionality, and challenging building. All the sets I’ve mentioned had that. The 42100 set seriously lacks in challenging building, which is awful
