Careers was the go-to game for my family when I was growing up, and Tom is the only other person I hear talking about it. With the ability to choose your victory condition, the experience cards to move a specific number of spaces instead of rolling the dice, and the opportunity cards to be able to teleport to a desired profession track, it really was a step above other games of its time.

Props to Tom and Zee for giving us an interesting Top Ten list and sticking to the premise. I'm far more interested in what you guys played a lot of in your youth and your college days (your gaming heritage) than what you think is cool now. Maybe none of us want to admit how much how much Uno or Stratego we played as kids because NOW we think those are uncool or nonchallenging games. But it's a lot more interesting to know how we got to where we are today. Tom's story about writing strategy manuals for Stratego as a kid and Zee's story about playing games between class and rehearsals were a neat peak into what shaped them into what they are today. Bravo!

I understand what Sam's getting at. I don't agree with it, but I understand. Look at it like this: Pandemic Legacy is a book, with many chapters. Each chapter is separate yet a part of the whole. If the book has 30 chapters and you've read 20 of them, you haven't read the book 20 times. You haven't even finished reading it once; you've just experienced 20 "parts" of the larger whole.

And as Zee says, how many times did you set up the game and then put it away? Or finish a specific scenario? Pandemic Legacy is a 18+ played game by the time you finish it, not only a "single" play! :P

In retrospect I think Sam has a point. You’ve had the full experience of For Sale multiple times, but the full experience of Pandemic Legacy twice. You know For Sale inside and out, but not the case with Pandemic Legacy. It’s like watching a movie vs a tv show; sure you might have spent more time on the tv show, but if you’ve watched 50 episodes of it but seen a single movie 20 times, you are more familiar with the movie.

I'd like to see a list similar to this but it's the most played games that were designed in the last 10 years. This will take out all the old games that you played a million times because there just weren't nearly as many options and you didn't own as many games so you just played the same one over and over again. Also, I'd like to see a list similar to this that is most played games that take longer than 30 minutes to play...this filters out those games you can play 4 times in a night because they take 5-15 minutes to play....like Magic, you can play a game in 3-4 minutes or even less...so you could play it 10 times within an hour without problem.

+PreppinShootinLivin I agree on a similar list but make it from the last 12 years. Also, Magic games don't tipically last that little. I would say 10-15 minutes is the average. Can go less than that, and can go a lot longer than that.

Careers: I played that so much! I owned it and every week in Jr. High and much of HS, we went to a house in the boonies for banjo band rehearsal. We played that every week for months on end -- and more than once in an evening!Loved that game and wish I still had a copy just for fun!
@Mr_Mooo

The only problem I find with this list is something that was brought up by Tom. When you start getting in to board games, your collection builds slowly. So you end up playing your first couple of games A LOT! As your collection increases and you have more options on what you 'feel like' playing at the time. I want to see a list of games you have kept in your rotation the longest. (which you may have done already, but there is a lot of top 10's to get through ;) )

I agree, Zee played Pandemic Legacy twice. It's not like a campaign of D&D where one campaign can last a month or 4 decades. I would prefer we say "I've played through two boxes" since you have to buy a new box for each play through.
@leenicholas3279

Don't worry Sam, I understand where you're coming from! I disagree, but I get what you're saying. If Zee had been counting multiple sessions of T.I.M.E. Stories whilst doing the same scenario (say you just ended each session when you reset the cards due to running out of TU) then I would agree with you completely - that's just one, multi-sessioned game. For Legacy, though, each game has a distinct beginning and end that you can physically 'win' or 'lose' so I've always counted them as separate games. Keep up the good work, buddy! Watching you guys banter is a blessing to me each week!
@davidkuck

I would argue that a Pandemic Legacy campaign is 12-24 plays of Pandemic with slightly different rules for each play. I'm with Zee.
@Mackerachi
8 жыл бұрын
I actually count my plays by how often they get to the table rather than how many plays of them. If we play the same game 3 times in one night, it only gets recorded once. This helps me balance the stats for longer games and in showing my how much my group actually likes a game, rather than how many plays you can cram in on one session. Campaign games are still recorded once per day played. So if we play a 6 campaign game over 6 weeks (a game a week) it gets recorded 6 times. But if we play 2 campaign levels in one day, it's recorded once. As far as tablet/online, I count one play per week, and only if it was against a real person. Because it's so much easier to play 2 or more games of an online game, because setup and takedown isn't there, it runs faster, and it's easier to find players to play with you. I can't say these limitations effect the outcome too often. Maybe 20-30 games each year aren't recorded due to the way I count. It's not a big deal. I don't record scores/players.

I agree with excluding video game plays. I think that the frequency of logged board game plays should fully reflect the element of setup and tear-down. That has a real effect on how often some games are played, and is one of the measures of a board game design, IMO. Video game versions mask that element.

Sam, you are on point about the legacy game/dnd campaign, sorry Zee I would say that a game play is from when you start the game until when you finish it. Irrelevant of how many sessions or time it takes to do so. Pandemic Legacy starts at the beginning of month 1, and ends after month 12, that is one play through. A dnd campaign starts at session 1 and goes until the story arc is over. If that takes 1 session or 10 years worth of sessions it's still one campaign. I would relate the legacy games to a book after you finish the last chapter you've finished the book. Each game is a chapter, it's not over till you've finished the book. In that same style of analogy, most games are short stories, you start them and then you finish the play and it's over...the next time you go to play, you are simply re-reading the story, not moving on to the next part.

I actually agree with Sam on the Legacy/D&D subject. One session/campaign/whatever of those games is still one full-fledged game...you're just taking breaks between each session. Now, vanilla Pandemic...each one of those games is different, and should be counted as separate plays. I've only played one D&D campaign, but I don't feel like I've played it 20-30 times. I feel like I've played through one story out of countless others.

+Errol Wilde Agreed, and it eliminates a lot of this arguing about what constitutes "one play". I played a lot of bridge in college, but is each hand a play (we used duplicate scoring)? One session? There's no necessary dichotomy. Both Sam and Zee are correct. It's a pretty decent analogy to the old 'Ship of Theseus' so-called paradox - it just depends on how you look at it.

Jamaica would be one of my groups top played. Because of its simplicity and the fact it accommodates so many players...not to mention it’s beautiful. In fact, we’ve played it so much I’m kind of burned out, ha! And kudos on Stratego! The best game ever created!!!

I agree with Sam. It only counts as 1 for a broken up campaign style game, no matter how many sessions it takes.
I agree with Sam, the entire game, start to finish is all 14 events together. That would be one play[through] of Pandemic Legacy.

kudos for SH for calling out chess and checkers at the end. Not sure why he didn't include Risk and Monopoly but I suppose he grouped them into "stuff like that". Also likely left out were classic card games (War, Hearts, Spades, Canasta, etc.)

My top 10: 1. The Resistance: Avalon 2. Love Letter 3. A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition) 4. Betrayal at House on the Hill 5. Elder Sign 6. Munchkin 7. Dead of Winter 8. Ticket to Ride 9. Spyfall 10. One Night Ultimate Werewolf All the games that I have put here are games that I conceder and classify as true BOARD GAMES. Things like Chess, Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, Mikado and cetera and TCGs or LCGs like Magic the Gathering and Netrunner were not included. Although, it is hard to make a definite and exact list of the most played games when you don't record your plays ... but I feel it that way :)

It's actually pretty clear and a matter of definition: A *game* can consist of one or more *campaigns*, and each campaign is played in *sessions* where a session can consist of one or more *plays*. A similar question is: If I play Magic casually and I play three times, then it's three plays. But if I play in a tournament and it's best-of-three, then suddenly my three plays become one play? No.

Could totally understand Sams argument on legacy it’s like have you see a whole movie if you’ve continually paused it in segments finally seeing the end the 12th pause. That said Zee does have a justified choice because a legacy game is like watching a tv show. Every episode is an episode even though it’s not the whole season wrapped up.

Just want to go on record saying I agree with Sam. Zee can count his two campaigns of Pandemic Legacy as either 35 games of Pandemic or 2 games of Pandemic Legacy. Since he put PL on the list, his count is 2.

I have an idea for a top 10 video: "Top 10 games I want to talk about". The reason doesn't matter; because I love it, because I hate it, because it is underrated, it doesn't matter. Maybe this way Sam cannot screw the list up. Since the criteria is random, anything he pickes would actually make sense.

+The Dice Tower Next list I want to see is: "Top 10 Games spent the most time playing" This list is so heavily weighted toward quick/light games that I think a more accurate measure of love for a particular game is amount of time spent playing the game. (For example, 5 games of Lost Cities would count significantly less than 1 game of TI3).
@ogreman2229

I actually agree with Sam on the pandemic legacy argument. I understand classifying each round as a different play for the sake of this list but in general i believe you have to complete a game to classify as 1 play, therefore a legacy game would only be finished once you complete the whole game. Similarly with Time stories 1 play would be each full story segment no matter how many times you reset for another try or how many sessions it took to succeed.
@BrandonGraham

+Ogreman222 Agreed. Though he also made the point that each round of Pandemic Legacy could count as one game for "Pandemic" as a whole.

Very very interesting! I guess I agree with Sam more on this, I prefer not to count games I won't play any more nor like. But I will list 3 lists, one like Tom did, 1 like Sam did, and one with computer plays counted. I agree with Sam about Legacy games, however I haven't played them. But in the same vein, I disagree with Sam about Spyfall, cause isn't there a rule or variant, where the true winner has the most wins in sessions? I dunno, I could be wrong there. List like Sam's, those most played, not counting games as a kid, or games I dislike now: (BTW, I do not count plays, so these are guesses.) 1. Talisman: I am uncertain when I started playing this, either late 1985, or early 1986. I found it in a game store looking for D&D stuff while in the military. I have been playing it ever since. 4th edition now, 2nd edition then. They are similar enough, counting them as 1 game. 2. RoboRally: I got in on this game when it came out and was a hit with me and my friends. Even played this at church and with my wife. 3. Bang! the dice game: Like Sam, this has been a big hit in different circles. Played it a lot with my family and have played it at my meetup. (it is entirely possible #'s 3-6 are not correctly ordered. These are guesses.) 4. Balderdash/Beyond Balderdash: 1st played this while in Bible school and fell in love with it. We play it a lot at our family get togethers. My favorite party game. 5. Smear/Pitch (High, Low, Jack, and Game variant): Barely makes the list, I will not go out of my way to play this, but would be interested in playing this under many conditions. It is a game my Dad played, particularly when deer hunting and such. They played this more than Poker. When I became a teen, I started playing with my dad. 6. UNO: a game played in different family and friend circles growing up. And unlike Tom & Zee I still like it. It is no longer on my top 100, but barely, as it sits at #106. Sure I would like to try a couple of games Zee has reviewed and mentioned as UNO replacements. Just haven't played them. 7. Magic the Gathering: I forgot to add this, added in with an edit. I played this for 2-3 years. I wasn't heavy into it, but had a friend or 2 that was. But played enough to make the list. I played in at least 1 tournament. 8. Stratego: Another game like UNO, not on my top 100 but close, not sure where, but maybe around 120. And also like Tom, I wrote down setups, and even labeled them under different kinds of categorized setups based on the mood of play. I played this a lot while in the military and other places. 9. Werewolf: I learned of this game in early 2015, slightly over a year ago. But I taught this game to friends, and family and has gone gangbusters! I like it, it's my 21st favorite game, but often friends and family request it more than I like. Of coarse I mostly moderate, which I do like to do, but I do prefer playing. I also prefer Ultimate Werewolf: Deluxe Edition. Like stated above, I am not certain on plays and may have more plays in this than Stratego, but not certain. I would guess in a year it will be true. 10. No Thanks!: Another game like Sam says, it has fit in many circles. My family likes it, and bringing it to meetup, it gets plays as well. I enjoy it as well. 11. Mille Bornes: Another game I grew up with, but also played in French class, a game I still like, and is the highest mass market game on my top 100 at #76. (It may have more plays than NO Thanks! I am uncertain. More on this below.) 12. Tomb/Tomb: Cryptmaster: Since I am uncertain on game plays with my games, I have to include a couple more possible games. Tomb is my 3rd longest played non-mass market game. Also the game that intrigued me into the possibilities of the board game hobby, and eventually moved me to find more games. I love this game, its my #1 favorite game. I have played this game often, but sadly not often enough. 13. Run, Fight, or Die! When I 1st got this game less than a year ago, I played it a lot. It has fallen in play recently, but once it gets out with more plays with the expansions, it will move higher on this list I am sure. ------- List like Tom's, including games I hate and played as a child: 1. Talisman 2. RoboRally 3. Life: Oh how we loved this game growing up, and played even as an adult and when I first got married with a friend who also was newly married. 4. Trouble: I think between the ages of 9-13 this may have been my favorite game. There was 1 or 2 summers where I played this all summer long with a cousin. Possibly out played Life, not certain. 5. Monopoly: another game played as a child and as an adult. But after playing it a couple times newly married, I began to hate the game because of the fights this game started. It's now 1 of 11 games on my "never to play again" list. 6. Bang! the dice game 7. Balderdash/Beyond Balderdash 8. Battleship: I played this fairly often with my dad. He wouldn't play board games, although card games were ok, but he also would play this. To this day I think he cheated. Now this game is also on my "never to play" again list. 9. Smear/Pitch (High, Low, Jack, and Game variant) 10. UNO 11. Magic the Gathering 12. Checkers: Like Sam, I played a lot of Checks as a child. Don't know how much. Maybe more than 8-10, not sure though. ------------ List counting video game play throughs: 1. Life: I still have a copy of this for the computer, although i haven't played in about 3-4 years. I played it alot. Solo and with others. Counting both board and computer plays this most likely is my most played game. 2. Monopoly: Probably about 12-15 years ago, I would play a low quality computer version of this solo. I also had it for a couple of game systems but probably only played it 1-2 times there. But counting all kinds of play throughs, this would rank as #2. 3. Talisman: I do have the digital Talisman, but only have played a handful of times, but counting the vast amount of real life plays, this scores high! 4. Mille Bornes: Probably the most played board/card game on the computer. And while I have played this growing up, there weren't an enormous amount of plays. But counting them together, it raises it rank highly. I really liked the computer game, someday I may dig it out again. 5. Catan: If you count Settlers of Canaan, and my Xbox plays of Catan, this would rank here. 6. Ticket to Ride: I think I have only played the board game 3-4 times. But have played it solo on the Xbox numerous times. 7. Bang! the dice game: no digital plays, but still holds here 8. Balderdash/Beyond Balderdash: no digital plays, but still holds here 9. Smear/Pitch: I may have played an online version. In my computer class in Highschool I tried creating a computer version myself, but failed. 10. UNO: no digital plays, but still holds here ---------- Other games of note: Careers: Probably never heard of this while growing up. A meetup friend introduced it to me about 7 months ago, I played it once and understand Tom's Euro statements here. I doubt I'd play it again. Better than Monopoly. Poker: I am surprised this didn't make anyone's list on the video. I haven't played it enough to make mine, but it was on my short list. Overpower: Besides another recent mention by Tom, I have never heard of this game.

If it is measured as the most time spent playing the game, Talisman, Medici and Thebes might crack my top 10. Just based on number of plays - 500 and Cribbage are my most played - both traditional card games. Crokinole, Magic the Gathering, Pandemic. Sequence - which I played regularly with my wife and another couple. Scrabble, Apples to Apples, Fairy Tale and Citadels.

I get both sides of the legacy argument. Zee has completed it twice. Like if you play through a video game you've played it through once, true. You may have played a bunch of sessions though. If you stop watching a movie and then you finish it later have you seen it twice or once? That narrative element lends to Sam's point of view. Ultimately though I side with the idea that each play of each month is a play. Like each Imperial Assault mission is one play.

Carcassonne and Star Realms used to be big go-tos for gaming in my experience since they're quick. Dominion, Mice & Mystics, lots of things fell to the wayside since I usually had to leave for work in the evening an they would take up the whole time I had. Now I have a consistent gaming group with the ability to play longer since getting a better job. That's my story anyways.

I 100% agree with Sam. Playing through the entirety of Pandemic Legacy I would consider to be one gameplay. If someone said, Ive played Pandemic Legacy 6 times, folks would instinctively assume that they've played through the whole campaign 6 times. Then you would have to clarify no, Ive only played 6 'rounds'. And folks who have played it through 'once' would say, oh well then you haven't actually even finished it, inherently indicating that they havent even played it once. I bet thats how it would play out and therefore I think Sam is right. I think the semantics of the title is whats causing confusion. I think this list is more "top 10 games with the most gameplay time" or something like that.
@twenty-sidedturtle2107

Initially I was with Sam on the "Legacy" thing, because each play has its own ruleset so you only get all the rules if you play through the whole thing. However, thinking about it, if I play Five Tribes and then add the expansion and play again, I would still say I played Five Tribes twice even though the rule set was slightly different.
@GrandElemental
8 жыл бұрын
+Twenty-Sided Turtle Indeed. And following that kind of thinking, then technically playing with a different number of players, even if the core game otherwise stays the same, is a different game, because of some slight rule variations. It makes absolutely no sense in the context of this kind of list.
@twenty-sidedturtle2107

+GrandElemental I agree, but there is sort of a grey area. I'm not sure how many "times" I've played TIME Stories, for example. Three? Because I've played each scenario once or five because that's how many game sessions its been? Or eight because that's how many "runs" it took? I think Sam has a point, but yeah, I'd go with Zee.
