As a Costa Rican everything you say is accurate. I’m sorry you had that experience, we can do so much better. Many light skin Costa Rican people from the metropolitan area think they are better than people from Limón and immigrants from Nicaragua specially. They see Limón as the dangerous place in the country. In reality this country has issues all over its territory and you have to be careful everywhere you go. I could comment so much on this topic! If you ever come back I hope everything is better ❤️

I might have missed but where in America are you? It's a very big country and there are places that are more diverse and accepting than others. I live in the Bay Area that is quite heterogeneous. So I wouldn't apply one brush to paint all Americans. But I do understand this is your observations. Which is not to say there's no racism. I'm one of those white, older males but I'm keeping my ears open and trying to learn from everyone's experiences. From my observations racism isn't an on/off switch; everyone has prejudices based on their experiences or what they've learned. And it's sometimes based on any or all o frace, sex, orientation, gender, age, etc. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I never had a fear of being pulled over by the police or being shot at. They do not treat me the way we have seen African American’s being treated. We don’t have the same history with law enforcement in this country as African American unfairly suffer. Also economics plays a big part in this world. I was mostly ignored and not one person tried to strike up a conversation/small talk with me at breakfast for the week I was there. None of the store clerks was curious and asked me where I was from. Not saying ppl are supposed to flood me w/attention..just saying this differs from most other places I’ve visited where at least 1 or 2 ppl would at least strike up a conversation. The border agents of both countries gave me a lot of attitude, blunt questions and abrasive sarcastic humor ..not sure if it was b/c of race or if that’s just their sense of humor. @@williamweinberg9509 You act as if that's not a valid racist experience. Literally the entire world recently watched a cop murder a black man in broad daylight in a major city in front of a crowd of people. How is that not supposed to strike fear into any black person that lives in or visits the U.S.? And he was a rare instance where he actually faced consequences, but it's happened literally hundreds of times with no consequences at all. Not that "consequences" can bring murdered black people back to life.

Some friends of mine from the Bahamas said that they found Canada's racism to be annoying, because it was not overt, as in the U.S. That people would pretend, or else like them because they were black, and not because of who they were as individuals. That the U.S. racism was so obvious that they could avoid racist people easily.

Australia has a lot of work to do with its subtle racism. However I wonder if the eye contact thing was part cultural? I have 2 ladies (both white) who work in my office. One is from South Africa and the other is from the USA. I’ve noticed that both these ladies maintain such strong eye contact it was a cultural shock for me lol I kept thinking “do I keep just staring back? Is this weird. We’re still staring!” Haha. My co-workers have said the same thing. Also if you met with any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people eye contact avoidance is respectful.

I think you should have clarified that this is racism towards black people and not racism in general. Some of these countries may be more welcoming or at least more used to other ethnicities and display less prejudice. Most of the countries you mentioned would have a very low black population. Your own country may be very racist towards asian people, for example, but you would have no idea.

I know exactly what my country is prejudice to and that’s why it’s number 3!
