Just recently watched "The Beast Below" - and it felt to me like the identification between the Doctor as the last of the Time Lords, and the beast, as the last of the Space Whales was that trope done right, whereas in Space Babies it felt like it came more out of nowhere. Just that, I didn't expect to be thinking about connections between Space Babies and Beast Below until we got to that bit. Also, liked that with Beast Below it was Amy making the connection between the "infinitely kind" beast who seemed to be fine with being tortured by humans for 300 years, and the Doctor himself, while the Doctor has no idea.

My vote is for The Rings of Akhaten. People usually just discuss the music and the Doctor's big speech, and while both of those elements are excellent, what I like most about the episode is how it lays the groundwork for Clara and the 11th Doctor's character arcs. For Clara, The Rings of Akhaten does a great job of establishing why she is qualified to be a companion. 11 would've invited her to travel with him regardless of her competency thanks to his fascination with "the Impossible Girl," but RoA shows why Clara legitimately deserves to travel with the Doctor. Even though this adventure is just meant to be fun sightseeing, when Clara sees a child in distress she immediately drops her focus on the "awesome" environment she requested and goes to help Merry. Although Clara is separated from the Doctor on an alien world with aliens she can't reliably communicate with, Clara doesn't become overwhelmed or scared and focuses on making Merry feel comforted. Off the bat this establishes Clara as confident, independent, and compassionate. Later, when Merry is being kidnapped by the vampire, Clara's first instinct is to chase after Merry and sacrifices her mother's wedding ring to facilitate the rescue. This displays Clara's fearlessness, sense of justice, and willingness to self sacrifice for the greater good. Lastly, Clara steps up to confront Akhaten and sacrifices her most cherished heirloom in an attempt to save the denizens of the Rings. Clara does this is in spite of the fact that the Doctor, a seasoned traveler with god-like capabilities, was unable to finish off Akhaten; so realistically what chance does Clara have of defeating it? This sets up Clara's inclination to face danger head on and bite off more than she can potentially chew. In this case she succeeds, planting the seeds of her desire to be like the Doctor. Sadly, this is also what leads to Clara's death. Perhaps Clara would've been a bit more conservative in her actions if she didn't succeed in defeating a god on her very fist adventure. As for the 11th Doctor, I believe Rings of Akhaten is a great showcase for how Amy and Rory's deaths and 11's self-isolation have changed him. 11 is noticeably more whimsical in his speech and movements which gives off the impression of him embracing life and fun once more, but this is pretty clearly a mask. 11's stalking immediately establishes his obsessive nature and how detached 11 has become, seeing Clara not as a person but as a puzzle to be unraveled. 11 losing track of Clara but not showing any concern upon being reunited leads me to think 11 did this on purpose to see how she'd respond. Likewise, the Doctor lacking payment for the hover bike seems like another test given the Doctor's usually infinite pockets. The only thing that genuinely seems to take the Doctor off guard is Akhaten's true nature. In this moment, we see 11 completely drop all his whimsy showiness to reveal the tired, lonely person he is inside. For a moment, when the Doctor shares his memories it almost seems like he's letting go of a burden. However, reliving his past joys and traumas proves not to be enough, leaving to doctor to question "what more do you need?" Which Clara responds to by offering all the potential futures she missed out on when her mother passed away. This is an important reminder to the Doctor to not live in the past, but to embrace the infinite potential of the present and future. While it's not a message 11 immediately takes to heart, in Day and Time of the Doctor 11 is finally able to move forward. And thus, the seeds that were planted in this moment are finally able to blossom. In the final scene of the episode, Clara confronts the Doctor and asks him to see her as her own being, not just an echo or ghost of another Clara. This is the 11th Doctor's struggle until the end of Journey to the Center of the TARDIS, where he finally is able to recognize Clara as a legitimate person rather than just seeing her as a mystery. This request comes full circle in Deep Breath, when Clara is struggling to accept the 12th Doctor. 12 begs Clara to just see him, and ultimately, she is able to look past the outer layer and see the person underneath, just like how the 11th Doctor was able to do with her. I doubt this was an intentional setup but it was beautiful how Moffat weaved this request back into Deep Breath! For these reasons I believe The Rings of Akhaten deserves way more recognition. Yes, it's a flawed episode and the middle section drags, but it accomplishes a lot in its runtime. And, of course, The Long Song and the Doctor's speech are both bangers, but those don't need elaboration. For all these reasons, The Rings of Akhaten is one of my favorite DW episodes. Every time I rewatch it I find more and more reasons to love it!

Love And Monsters: I think people have a go at this one because there's not much of the normal characters, it's a mix of comedy and horror, and there's a tasteless sex joke at the end. But those are what I like about it!! The Bells Of St John: Nobody thinks anything of this one really. I llke to pop it on now and then and just have a good time. It's action packed and charming! Journey To The Centre Of The Tardis: People hate this one because the brother robot twist is stupid. Stupider than getting Shakespeare to write a magic spell to banish actual evil witches?! Don't make me laugh. The brothers tell a relatable tale of sibling jealousy and greed through the lens of a science fiction robot on a spaceship, and there's a silly time loop that makes no sense. The End Of Time: a rip roaring final outing for the Tenth Doctor and his lovely friend Wilf. Why do so many people give this episode such a kicking?!

Sleep No More I used to hate, but now I love it. The unique filming style was central to this... like, we don't often get a window into what the Doctor with their companions are like... but here we have a whole episode where it feels like we are catching long glimpses of what they actually are like to outsiders... like, this is how they would come across if you were to meet them IRL. And the Grunt stuff is genuinely interesting sci fi worldbuilding... like, they feel well fleshed out as a different type of life from humans. It's just another low stakes episode where our heroes are just enjoying another adventure... just like Fear Her (one of my favs ever). I mean, technically it's not low stakes coz it is essentially a universe ending event.... or just humanity ending, idk. the unique shooting style also just makes it feel unique as a doctor who episode, which is super valuable if you watch lotsa doctor who, coz it feels as different as the chibnall era feels compared to the Murrary Gold era... it's like a mini episode sized brand new era.
@DriverHenryWho3245

@@LucyliciousDoccyWho this is why I believe Sleep No More to be the scariest episode of the show (and my favourite ep). The POV filming is so realistic, it makes you feel like you're actually there! It's quite like FNAF with all the creepy scares, ambient music, glitchy cameras and even a mad murderous scientist. The explanation of the found footage is really clever too. It's very meta, which I love in Doctor Who. Although I liked the Grunt stuff, it'd be nice to have another episode where they have a sorta revolution like the Ood in series 4. I also don't like how they cast the FIRST trans and autistic person in the show as a low-intelligence creature that was disrespectful as boundaries. It was probably unintentional but it creeps me out, especially as a queer autistic person myself. 😬
@LucyliciousDoccyWho
2 ай бұрын
@@DriverHenryWho3245 I'm trans and autistic. I think she was nonbinary at the time, so, like, while there is issues with nonbinary identities being nearly always tied to being aliens in media, like, given that Doctor Who had only had Susan the seemingly trans horse (my friend says that the horse they used was female and was being referred to by their owners as male, which was a weird wrinkle in that scene...) who wants us to respect her, ahem, 'life choices' (sigh) and Cassandra who was trans via a throwaway forgettable joke... like, this is Doctor Who doing pretty fucking well at representation, by its own low standards. I hadn't thought of them being problematic from a consent perspective, but yeh, that is very valid. I guess I just explain that away to myself by having them being genetically engineered to not have the capacity to understand basic social stuff like consent. But yeh, good point. Are they really the first autistic actor? There's no way that's the case, but I guess openly autistic is another matter.
@DriverHenryWho3245
2 ай бұрын
@@LucyliciousDoccyWho I don't know if she was the first autistic actor, but she's the only one I know of (there aren't many autistic actors I know of apart from her and Anthony Hopkins). It'd be nice to have more openly neurodivergent representation in Doctor Who. I remember Ryan's dyspraxia being alright but a lot of people didn't like it. Mr. Chibnall tried to make 13 seem autistic, and he did alright, though she could've been a bit stronger. It'd be good to have an autistic writer writing an autistic character in the show (idk if Chibnall is ND but I never assume someone is, because I usually end up disappointed)

My top underrated Doctor Who episodes (from NuWho): Idk, how many episodes did Mark Gatiss write?. Also: Cold Blood / The Hungry Earth, The Lie of the Land, Ascension of the Cybermen / The Timeless Children, and all of Flux (especially Once Upon Time, Survivors of the Flux and The Vanquishers). Edit 2: I didn't include episodes like Knock Knock or a lot of Thirteen episodes because episodes like the first one aren't really underrated but rather undiscussed (thought about including The Eaters of Light, for example, but didn't) and the ones that are more like most of Thirteen's era (or Space Babies) have a lot of haters but also a kind of cult following that's quite big and appreciates them. I still included Flux because I see even a lot of Thirteen fans or Flux defenders say it let them down (especially the mentioned episodes), which I personally don't feel at all. Probably should include Arachnids in the UK though. Yeah, there it is, add Arachnids in the UK to the list. Top underrated episodes from Classic Who seasons 1-3 (just started season 4, mening I've only watched Part I of The Smugglers so far): The Sensorites. The Gunfighters. Edit 1: forgot some people hate The Web Planet.

Although a lot of people don't like when Doctor Who delves into supernatural monsters, I really do enjoy Tooth & Claw and the Shakespeare Code. They're probably not considered "underrated", but are being seen as "mid" in series 2. Werewolves are my favourite monsters in fiction, so it may be a tad biased, (btw the Primords are CRIMINALLY underrated monsters; they're terrifying as fuck,) but I LOVE the idea of the silly monks, a werewolf genetic passing on through the royal family and the witty dialogue they're brimming with. I especially enjoyed Queen Victoria's in-depth look into the afterlife: showing her grief - and contrasting with the Doctor's own. The Shakespeare Code probably doesn't have as much merit as Tooth & Claw, but its just really fun! I mean, the idea of words being their own science is fascinating - and the Caronites are superb! (Also, Martha is just wonderful - the Doctor didn't deserve her.) In terms of Spin-offs, however, I've got to say that Greek Bearing Gifts in Torchwood Series 1 is a really good episode: showing a side to Tosh we've never seen before, a manipulative alien - and MY GOD - showing how telepathy would be both an addictive and tragic ability! (I mean, that monologue with Jack comparing a trans woman to an alien imposter DID NOT age well, and it was really out of character with someone like JACK, THE GAY ICON, to say that - but overall.) Also, underrated or not, Adrift is MY FAVOURITE episode in series 2!!!! In the Sarah Jane Adventures, I thought Secrets of the Stars was an enjoyable episode. Being someone who dabbles in astrology, it was interesting seeing it challenge Sarah Jane's scientific world view - opposed to episodes like the Eternity Trap, which are more debunkers for the supernatural and being general filler.

I feel like a lot of ppl in their dislike of S6 & 7 just casually forget so many of the great eps we got like God Complex, Girl Who Waited, Cold War, Hide. Also somebody put Time Heist which is a great pick too.

Underrated Classic Who: Invasion of the Dinosaurs (Very fun, lots of twists, dinosaurs, the villains’ plan is the craziest thing ever and I love it) Underrated New Who: Voyage of the Darned (Great supporting characters, the best Doctor speech of all time, ridiculous premise executed to perfection, Wilf random but welcome appearance, “Allonsy Alonso” payoff)

i'd really have to think on it to make my list for my top underrated nuwho eps, but i know these would be on there (in no order): the power of three knock knock nikola teslas night of terror gridlock arachnids of the uk closing time like you said basically ALL thirteen era episodes can go on here but i tried to keep it as realistic as i could without listing all of s11-13 😂

Every time you talk about how often your opinions on episodes change, I feel like you’re just describing me. Right there with you as an incredibly fickle and changeable fan of this show. Anyway #10: I enjoy this one. I don’t think it’s *great* or anything, but it’s one of the few in Series 7 that I think holds up. Another one of those few is Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, and I think both exemplify how sometimes the main thing an episode needs to tie everything together is a hatable, detestable villain. That and I was actually really emotionally invested in the stuff with Ada on my most recent viewing. The lack of acknowledging Clara’s arc (both in this episode and across 7b generally) never really stood out to me, but that’s mainly just because I’m not so invested in the mystery that I don’t welcome distractions. I don’t tend to separate 7a and 7b in my mind. I think they both come together to make a largely mediocre run of stories, but this one’s a solid, standard standalone. #9: Eh, Beast Below and Victory of the Daleks are alright. I don’t dislike them the way I used to but they just don’t “hit” me, y’know? Very much agreed on the general sentiment re:Series 5 (and the Paradigm Daleks [and those benches]) but this one doesn’t do it for me. #8: this is kinda the opposite of number 7. I still like Night of Terror a lot, but I used to *love* it and I don’t so much anymore. I think what would’ve tipped this over for me is to have it be just a bit more of a Doctor Character Piece. Jodie’s Doctor leans the most vocally into the character’s appreciation of science and gadgeteering, and that’s kinda throughout this story but I’d have liked more of it, really make the episode ABOUT how the Doctor views the concept of “genius.” Without that it’s still a really solid episode but it’s so laser focused on its historical figure that it seems like nobody else really gets that much material to work with, performance wise. Kudos for bringing up Resolution though- that would absolutely be one of my picks were I doing this list- one of the best modern Dalek stories, and possibly the best Chibnall episode. #7: this is gonna be my first big disagreement. I just watched the Web Planet like 4 days ago and that shit does nothing for me. It just drags, even if I like the Animus as a villain and a lot of the direction. #6: There’s a lot I like about Return of Doctor Mysterio- remaking Richard Donner’s Superman but as a Doctor Who story is genius, Justin Chatwin is one of those American actors who brings a very unique kind of screen presence to the show- but I think it misses a trick by having the Doctor and Grant completely separate from each other for the back half of the story. I get that it’s hard, if not impossible, to write a story where the companion is literally Superman, but the scenes of 12 and Grant bouncing off each other are the highlight of the story, and the latter half misses that dynamic a lot. #5: I ain’t seen this one. #4: I don’t care for it. I think Bill’s friend group are boring, I think the twist is needlessly convoluted, it’s got the spooky atmosphere but that’s about it. #3: Don’t hate this one, but it’s really disposable to me. Like, it’s whatever. I don’t think it being light and silly is a problem, but it’s just not that compelling or well-structured. Feels like more than half the dialogue is just very blunt exposition, and it’s especially frontloaded with that compared to other series openers. #2: Ain’t seen this one. Kudos to the Route 216 theme though. #1: Fuck Yeah! This might be a top 10, maybe even top 5 Modern Story of all time. One of the stories so good I had to make my own whole video on it years back. Genuinely believe this one is a masterpiece, and it hits that sweet spot I wanted with Tesla where it’s most explicitly about the time period and the one-off characters, but also a really effective “Doctor Character Piece.”

My most underated episodes are The Idiot's Lantern, which is sandwiched inbetween a two part Cyberman story and a two part episode featuring Old Scratch causes it to be overlooked. Hell Bent, an action packed episode that wraps up series nine and has a easy to follow plot; which makes it easier to follow than Heaven SEnt. The Timeless Child. An other Episode that expands the origins of the Doctor and is very relatateable. Logopolis. As regeneration stories go this one is pretty high stakes. it's the end of the Universe. That's rather important don't you think? And finally, The Power of the Doctor. A fun Celebration of Show's history which sees the return of beloved Companion's TEagan and Ace as well as past Doctors. The only thing missing would have been some Nitro nine blowing up the Daleks.

My most underrated list in chronological order: -The Krotons (conceptually awesome with rad crystal aliens) -The Space Pirates - it's set in the grim dark edgy real world, just like beloved stories like Genesis and Androzani. It deserves to be seen on their level. No idea why there's a disparity of opinion between them. -Underworld - relentlessly incredible. So much cool conceptual stuff, loads and loads of ideas, ah, it's absolutely incredible. The moral is that the real vials of cum were the friends we made along the way. Everything is amazing about this. -Destiny of the Daleks - its reputation should be swapped with Earthshock. The Daleks are at their scariest and most intimidating, and Romana's reaction to them is enriched by the Time War. The only bad thing is calling the Daleks robots, but I just don't care. It's so fun, so rewatchable. -Four to Doomsday - 10/10 -Time-Flight - racist Master aside, it's a strong standard episode of doccy who, kinda like the incredible Lazarus Experiment, but worse. -The Twin Dilemma - we see sides of the Doctor never seen before or since. Colin is utterly compelling. -Fear Her - the comfiest watch. Lovely to just vibe with Doc and Rose. The plight of the alien and the kid made me cry. And I adore how hard they were trying to shoehorn the idea that the Olympics is SO SIGNIFICANT AND MEANINGFUL coz it was gonna happen in London soon. -The Lazarus Experiment - almost never had a Doctor Who monster with such scale and awesomeness. Also just incredibly solid and surprisingly thoughtful at times. -The Pilot -Thin Ice -Knock Knock -The Monky trilogy -The Eaters of Light -Arachnids in the UK -The Halloween Apocalypse - the most hype doccy who episode ever -Once Upon Time - the most dream like, along with The Edge of Destruction ep.1 -Survivors of the Flux - phenomenal -The Vanquishers - an utter blast

I am the number 1 series 8 supporter. So I find that a lot of the series 8 episodes are highly underrated. Like time heist. The caretaker. Robots of Sherwood. I think the under the lake two parter from s9 is also quite underrated. And even the girl who died. Gridlock i also think is underrated. Even let's kill hitoer. I think the women who fell to earth is peak underrated who and you could definitely say space babies is underrated. A town called mercy is one of the best smith stories but it never gets talked about. Same with hide.

It's funny that pretty much every episode you've mentioned here (I can only talk about new who. In Germany it is pretty much impossible to watch classic who) I personally think is an absolute banger 🤣 I do have some episodes though which I think deserve a spot on this list as well: - Tooth and Claw: This is one of the first "regular" episodes (with that I mean everything else but specials or finales) that REALLY got me. Everything begore it was good no doubt, maby even better. But for some reason I gorät extremly invested in this one. - Fear Her: I don't really know why but I love it. - Night Terrors: Genuinly one of my favorite episodes of series 6. I don't think it is seen as a "bad" episode but I think it deseves way more praise than it gets. - Pretty much the entirety of series 7b 🤣: From The Bells of Saint John to Journey to the Center of the Tardis Series 7b does have a phenomenal run. Only after that I think it fummbles a bit. The finale is good though. Now my personal most underrated pick for this: - The Caretaker: This is literally one of my favorites of Series 8. Maby it isn't high on drama ect. but it is pure comedy. Whenever I just want to have a nice time I go back to this. And lastly: - Twice uppon a time: Yep, sorry dwfan91, I know you don't like it 😅 But it genuinly is a really touching episode not about a monster or anything, but simply about the doctor helping himself to move forward and not to give up. And all things considered I know this episode had to be rushed because it wasn't even planned to be Capaldi's regeneration story. But I do think it is a fitting end for 12. I can't really see 12 Regenerating in a very climactic episode like the doctor falls. This rather calm afterword is, for me at least, pretty much a perfect way to say good bye to my favorite doctor.

Ignoring that little Delta and the bannerman remark (IT IS PEAK DOCTOR WHO AND YOUR OPINION IS FACTUALLY WRONG). I’m so glad someone finally highlights paradise towers. And you perfectly summed up everything I love about it. An additional thing I’d like to praise about it is the incidental music, which turned out remarkably well for something composed in a week last minute. The original score lent heavier on the ghoulish, dystopian atmosphere of paradise towers itself. Aside from that original score just kinda being boring though, it didn’t really fit the tone of the story itself. The new score was far more lively, having some great atmosphere while still being energetic in a way which supported the ridiculous nature of the story.

Amy and Rory weren't divorced, the papers to file for divorce were just ready to be signed. A British divorce takes 6 months minimum and, as Amy had provided no grounds for divorce at the time we meet them in the story, it'd be more like two years. We don't find out how long Rory was in the doghouse and did not know why!

Didn't the doctor want to take Clara to Victorian London (the same time period as The snowmen) in the Crimson Horror to try and work out how they are the same Clara but accidently ends up in Yorkshire. That's why the doctor visited the time period so it is connected to the Impossible girl mystery.

I think I understand the hate for Space Babies, though I don't hate it myself. It was Episode One (sort of) of a NEW ERA (sort of). A lot of us, myself included, were hoping to get our friends and family to love the show as much as we do and A NEW ERA is a good way to do that. But on streaming, Episode One has to be a straight up masterpiece in order for anyone to watch Episode Two. Space Babies, while good, was....not that.

Man, watching this really has made me realise how much interacting with the fanbase in ways has hampered my enjoyment of many stories. For instance, I only really started engaging with the fanbase online from 2014 onwards. Before then, I had no idea people didn't like series 7, the beast below, victory of the daleks etc. I mean, I enjoyed all of the aforementioned. Also, never stop defending Space Babies. People act like it isn't just a standard episode of the show because the space babies exist and have (admittedly) weird cgi mouths. Its the classic "mythical monster turns out to be an alien/explained by sci-fi" story. It ain't that revolutionary.

I can definitely relate to how interacting with the fanbase made Dr Who more difficult. On one hand I met literal hundreds of awesome, awesome people who I can share my love of the programme with but on the other it fundamentally changed how I view the show and I mourn that almost child-like 'innocent' lens I use to watch the show through every day.

Dude, every time I offer some episodes I love from the Whittaker era, Demons of the Punjab is always the first one I mention. And I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve had someone go “Oh man, no, the writing’s so horrible and it’s the most boring episode ever”. I just… can’t comprehend not thinking this episode is at least - AT LEAST - good. Frankly goes for a lot of the Whittaker era, actually, but Demons of the Punjab is #1. #2 would probably be Resolution, and #3 would be The Tsuranga Conundrum. Tsuranga’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a genuinely fun, fast-paced, and frequently hilarious episode and I’ve loved it since the first time I saw it. As for other eras, I couldn’t definitely say or give an ordered list, but Kill the Moon, Power of Three, and Cold War are all probably on there. Return of Doctor Mysterio is an interesting one to me lol. I hated it instantly when I first saw it on the store shelves and thought “Man, Doctor Who went superhero?!” I bought it anyway, watched it, immediately loved it, and I STILL love it. And YES. Season 8 is peak! Probably Pertwee’s best and most consistently fantastic season. And I’m still making my way through the classics, but I’d probably have to say that Season 19 is right behind, and would probably be guaranteed to be right behind if it didn’t end with Time-Flight… I’d also like to add that I think there is always something to love about every single episode of Doctor Who, even the bad ones or the ones you don’t like. Even Fear Her or Legend of the Sea Devils. (Legend of the Sea Devils is also an underrated one IMO.)
