@@alexfrankfiction I don’t often gush but it really is brilliant. The characters can seem very basic, but there’s a reason for that, that is somewhat explained by one of the very first characters you meet that gives you a context for why individuals may not be as important as they seem, and it shows it’s very much intentional. But yeah I’ll say no more, highly recommend!

Congratulations on a great list of science fiction novels. Would you consider making another list of ten: your favorite ten SF short stories, or maybe a list of ten SF short stories that you cannot let go? A lot of classic SF is in the form of short stories, and they can pack a punch, so it would be an interesting list to make.

I had honestly not thought of that idea, but I think that's a fantastic recommendation! I have a few Dark Matter Magazines that are full of only short stories (It''s a newer magazine with a fresh take on some SF). Now, this is a most interesting list, very unlike many other similar lists. For example, almost all others put _Dune_ and _The Book of the New Sun_ series there, which I, like you, most certainly don't. OTOH, no Le Guin, Butler, Lem, Banks, Strugatskis? (Or, slightly less to my tastes, Reynolds, Baxter, Hamilton, Asimov, Clarke?) Anyway, what I _did_ read from your list I found excellent. I think you would like Iain M. Banks' Culture novels; my personal favorite is _Excession._ The ship-to-ship communications are snarky and hilarious, even more so when you know that it's the _ships themselves_ (their Minds - they are to AI as a human is to paramecia) doing the talking! Nnedi Okorafor's _Binti_ is great, too - I suppose you could call it YA, since it's about a Himba girl who is the first of her tribe to be accepted as a student at a prestigious galactic university. (There's tragedy at first, but then adventure and discovery, along with a hefty dose of Himba culture.) And you can't beat N.K. Jemisin for big world-building, but the Broken Earth trilogy is not for the faint of heart. (Most of her sense of humor is in her short stories; _How Long 'til Black Future Month?_ has both serious and funny stories in it.) (edit) Oh, and Sheri S. Tepper's _The Fresco_ is one that I read again and again - it's a first-contact story with a twist: The ambassador chosen by the aliens to carry their message to the President of the United States is a battered housewife! The story opens out in a dozen different directions, but it is an easy and exciting read. And lastly, try Joan Slonczewski's _Brain Plague._ It's about a starving artist who agrees to allow a colony of intelligent microbes to live inside her brain, in return for which they will help her with her art. But there's a catch - some strains of these microbes can "go rogue" and take over their host, a phenomenon known as "brain plague." Slonczewski is a microbiologist, so her microbe race sounds very authentic, but she never gets too dry or expository - the story is fast-paced and exciting.

Excellent choice! I have Children of Time on my digital TBR list as I bought a copy for my Kindle a while back! What did you rate it?

@@alexfrankfiction I gave it 5 stars. Though if i'm honest, the book played a lot to my personal biases, so I was a little generous with my rating. Objectively I'd still give it a solid 4.5 stars. It was a good mix of bizarre and interesting, plus bonus points for intriguing science. Would recommend.

@@alexfrankfiction I'll wait for the review if you end up doing one, in the meantime I'll get onto recursion. Happy reading!
