For those unaware, Goodwill is Not a charity! It's a for profit business that mostly hires people with mental disabilities and games the system so they don't have to pay them minimum wage. They are taking advantage of vulnerable members of our communities For Profit! So if you can donate and shop at a different thrift store I highly recommend it, but I know in many communities they drove out any alternatives long ago. Goodwill is the Walmart of thrift stores, and that's not a compliment. 🙎🏻♀️

I own a cleaning and organizing business. Every client I have requests that I do not donate their items to goodwill. You are so right. There are others in my area, such as waterfront mission, and many of their employees go through things donated and take home and sell on Ebay...etc...so I take their things to thrift stores that truly help the local community, or donate to those I know are in need of the items.

For those who have donated to Goodwill in the past like me - and why I still donate to them - here is what their focus is and what they do: "Goodwill has over 50 programs and services that help people overcome barriers to employment, including individuals with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities, displaced workers, participants in welfare-to-work programs, people who are homeless, have limited work experience or education, job skills or training, veterans, youth and older workers, and people with criminal backgrounds. Last year, Goodwill is Southwestern Pennsylvania served 12,411 adults and youth, including 3,809 virtually, while employing nearly 1,200...."

I can attest that my disabled son has an internship (paid minimum wage) with a local Goodwill right now. It’s been a great first job for him and provided a lot of hope. This may be different in different regions, but just wanted to share.

I don't think Goodwill is perfect by any means and I think how much they pay their executives is ridiculous, but after my father went to prison, Goodwill was the only place that would hire him for a very long time. Until more places are actually willing to hire people with records, Goodwill is important for a lot of returning citizens around the nation. The system is broken and we need to fix it, but in the meantime, I'm incredibly grateful that my dad got that job at Goodwill so he could afford to eat in the town his kids lived in.

Great video. When you donate, please don’t krap. Someone has to sort through and dispose of the krap. It isn’t right. Get rid of what is dirty or useable.

Three cheers for less focus on aesthetics. My kitchen cupboards are just fine being neat but not matchy matchy. I will no longer stress about having them look perfect. Glad to see this trend.

Yes!! As long as your cabinets work well for you, they don’t have to be perfect. And if you find that you’re missing that look later on, it’s always fine to upgrade a little at a time. That way you don’t feel the pressure to change it all at once but still get to make a fun aesthetic addition. 🥰

GOODbye to everything needing to be aesthetic! I mean I like a neat, tidy, pretty space but everything doesn't have to be so beige to achieve that. I have always and will always be a fan of woven baskets and wood over plastic.

I'm glad that companies are making organizers out of bamboo and other sustainable things. That said, I love that I can throw my plastic bins in the dishwasher when they need a good clean. And I love that we're moving away from aesthetics over functionality. I'm so tired of influencers making videos or "organized" spaces that might look appealing but have no way of actually working or being sustainable. I will never forget the video I saw of an influencer filling an unlabeled clear bin with half a dozen sponges on side side of a cabinet, then fill an opaque bin full of things that were NOT sponges and put a fancy label on that bin that read "sponges." Can't wait until she tells her kids or significant other to "go get a sponge."

Totally agree. It’s so visually appealing but not always practical. Plus when things look too curated, the space feels more like a showpiece than a home.

Unfortunately, I need those clear plastic containers bc I have TBI and have to see what I have. I also have other problems that compromise my movement so having to search for things just will result in not using it bc I won’t have the energy to search and sometimes just the idea of wondering if what I need is there or not just creates so much anxiety that it result in no movement at all. It literally took me over a decade to give into the idea I have to rely on those things.

One thing you'll notice pretty quickly on my channel is that I'm all for accessibility, so if the plastic containers save a trip to the shelf to search, that's still being Organized-ish. Congrats on finding the best system for you after a year of experimenting!

I just subscribed to your channel, I am so loving how you present things. And you are so right about all other the shifts in storage. I have been doing that for several years now. In 2004 we moved from a 3600 sq ft house in the DC area. To a small town in northeast Michigan to a 1800 sq ft cottage in the woods. A mile from Lake Huron. It is so delightful! I still am down sizing. The kids are out of the home now. So I am divesting the house and us for our sanity! I am delight to see more reasonable work toward home management , and not so plastic. Thank you for your input!

Next trend will be in the USA all new built homes will be built with kitchens that are modular and you can take them to your next home. They do that over in Europe.

Love the focus on “function” over “IG-ready” and moving away from plastics containers (although they are still IMHO the best solution in certain situations - as I put my house back together after a broken-pipe flood, I wish more of my “stuff” stored on the floors of my closets, etc. had been in plastic bins - wood or water hyacinth wouldn’t have helped and would have molded like everything else). We did just set up a charging station in our den and I love it! No more hunting for cords or random things charging all over the place! Great content!

Some trends I agree, some I don't. I'm still loving the aesthetics when I'm organizing, I don't go all rainbow but I do like to make it look nice and functional at the same time. I do love my charging station I made about a year or so ago. Ikea paper file that has the cork and put in a power strip inside a cabinet and voilà a charging station! Not a digital planner, tried it but didn't stick. I use Notion, TickTick and my Google Calendar. Love our functional ottomans, seat/tray & storage in 1! I also created a semi custom closet and it was such fun to put it together and display the items I love. And I'm always decluttering, so that's not new for me. And I could never get on board with toy rotation, just never worked for us. I go through the toys with my kids every couple months or so, discard anything broken, anything they aren't playing with etc and I keep the inventory low. We can tidy their room, just 1 person, in 5 mins or less.

Great. So now that the prices were driven up in thrift stores and poor people cannot afford it anymore, let's just take that resource completely away from them by putting it online. Not everyone can afford internet in their house, or shipping costs. That's such a priveledged way of dealing with this. 🙄
@saelmar
Ай бұрын
I don’t have Internet in my house. But I have easy access to it at the library and at fast food places and coffee shops. Good for some people if they want to hustle… I don’t expect others to conform to me or my needs… THAT is a privileged way of thinking. I am an adult and I can figure it out.
