I like a martini: 3 parts Brooklyn gin, 1 part dry vermouth, dash of orange bitters, express a lemon cest and drop it in. Timeless, classy, delicious.

The fun thing is that the spritz was born as a cheap and popular aperitivo and marketing has made it into something elegant and pretentious. In Venice (where the spritz was invented) you can still find bars that sell a glass of spritz for less than three euros.

It still is in the south of Italy. I remember I was going for aperitivo to a famous cheap bar in Sardinia that gave you a huge glass of aperol spritz with chips, nuts, small sandwiches all for 5 € Everyone was going there. You could barely find a table if you didn't come early. Cheap but still maintaining good quality.

Nice video, enjoyed it and subscribed😊. BTW I actually like a good Cosmo and make it once in a while, so is Martini, medium balanced stirred with olives. I completely agree with most others in your list including LIIT, Aperol Spritz, Blue Lagoon, Energy drink mixed drinks etc.

I think Sex on the Beach is very overrated. It's not a terrible cocktail (it's actually my favourite cocktail) but I really think that people cannot see that there are a lot of better cocktails than that. Yes, it's cheap and sweet and delicious, that's why I drink that too :D I love your videos man! Love from Finland!

The Long Island iced tea is not overly strong compared to practically any other drink. There’s only 2.5 ounces of booze in it, one of which is a relatively low ABV liqueur, and it all gets diluted by everything else that goes into the glass. It’s got the same amount of liquor in it as a Manhattan.

Not sure I can agree that the "Martini" is #1 over-rated. I can agree the abomination you described is a terrible cocktail. You're describing vodka shaken with a tiny bit of vermouth and a good bit of olive brine. And I know people order that, but is that really a Martini? What was more historically a martini would be about 2:1 gin and dry vermouth with olives as garnish. That cocktail is just fine - especially if you aren't into sweet stuff.

I generally with these selections. However, I think the Martini can be fixed by using a blanc/bianco vermouth instead of a dry vermouth and a 2:1 ratio of gin to vermouth (garnished with lemon zest because an olive or onion clashes with the sweeter vermouth). Also, I once experimented with the Aviation and made at least 10 variations, trying to find something that didn't taste like the fancy soap in grandma's guest room (or how I imagine that would taste). The following version, with very little creme de violette and lime juice instead of lemon juice, is actually pretty good: gin, 60 ml; maraschino liqueur, 15 ml; creme de violette, 3.75 ml; lime juice (not lemon juice), 15 ml. I used Aviation gin (partly because of the name), but the results would be similar with another new style gin. There's just a hint of creme de violette on the finish.

Good call on the martini. Just order a chilled shot if you're basically looking for straight liquor. I also prefer to serve "aperitivo" spritzers. Aperol is far from my first choice of main spirit in that drink. We serve Select at my bar.

Very interesting topic in this episode. I agree to the most of them being overrated, but not all. To me Long island ice tea actually have a very delicate complexity to it if mixed properly. The total amount of spirit is (or should be) be exact the same as in any Sour or Collins drink anyway. I really like this channel and you have good knowledge and also amusing to listen to Dr.Cork. Cheers from Sweden!

Hi Dr. Cork, Love your KZitem videos, you are obviously an expert bartender and very knowledgeable about spirits and how to make cocktails. I have a quibble with you about your overrated ranking of martinis. I suggest the following changes in the way you make it. The Classic Gin Martini: First, both the best London Dry Gin (very important) and the martini glass should be kept in a very cold freezer set at its coldest setting. Second, the dry vermouth should be poured in the frozen martini glass, swirled around to coat the inside of the glass, and then dumped out. Third, the extremely cold gin is then poured in to fill the glass. NO ICE SHOULD BE USED! Fourth, four Juniper berries and both an orange peel and Amalfi lemon peel should be added to the martini as garnish. This is an "A" rated Martini version. The sub-zero martini should be slowly sipped while having a happy conversation. As the martini warms up over time---its taste will change. It is like having ten different excellent martinis all at one sitting. Dr. Cork, please keep your very informative videos coming, all the best. Eric Prentis

Many cocktails are popular (and overrated) because they are not challenging taste-wise. They mostly put forward the sweet taste, unbalanced by bitter/sour/savoury aromas. Also, using vodka as main liquor and driver is what made made many cocktails very appealing to many. And for most people with untrained tasted buds and palate, this is acceptable. Regarding the Martini, a 1:2 vermouth:gin ratio is perfectly all-right, I een replace dry vermouth with bianco (demi-sweet) vermouth sometimes. Or, if I keep the dry vermouth, I also add 1 teaspoon of absinthe and maraschino liqueur (or other liqueurs), which shifts the cocktails towards the Tuxedo/Turf Club subfamily of Martinis, much more interesting than the standard one. Finally, I completely disagree on the Negroni and Boulevardier comments :)). They are very good cocktails, especially on a large ice cube, in a rocks glass, and a 1:1:1.5 or 1:1:2 ratios are indeed even better riffs.

I beg to differ with you Dr Cork! Oooh the martini is soooo wonderful, but you have to like gin…. As the poem goes… There’s something about a martini Ere the dining and dancing begin - To tell you the truth It’s not the vermouth - I think that it must be the gin. And the jokes… Q: Why are martinis like breasts? A: One’s not enough, and three is too many. And of course the 007 thing which is so fun. The Martini is a cultural icon! Learn to love it!

My top 10 list would be 10 different variants of the Mojito. They're a pain in the arse to make in a busy bar and tastes of sweet tooth paste. It's one of those drinks where people always want to say that "oh, you just haven't had a good one. Try it at...(insert favourite bar name)."

i actually think the spritz is really underrated. its my go to drink when i dont want an old fashioned and i dont think the bar uses fresh citrus. like a cruise ship. really tasty, easy to order (i freaking hate trying to order an americano), no juice, and tastes great with cheap sparkling wine. cheap vermouth ruins cocktails though.

But i swaer, with only 4 of these i was about to vomit which i literally doesn't happen to me regardless of how many drinks i take. The next day i was so fucked up, you can't not even imagine, and i could not sleep either. It was wild. And i bet my ass i was close to having a heart attack or some shit.

Peace!
