I agree with your list for the most part but there are one or two things. Chromis have a tendency to pick each other off and it's seems like lately more and more shipping with disease. I would say the other fish that you overlooked and most people overlooked are wrasses. Plenty of Peaceful and hardy examples that add tons of color and personality to one's aquarium. The Possum and Pink Streaked will work for smaller tanks and the Halichoeres Wrasses (ie Melanurus, Red Lined, Christmas) will work for 50 plus gallon tanks.

I purchased three of the fish types you have on this list, due to your recommendation, and couldn't be happier. The two Clowns are great, the three Fire Fish are actually pretty outgoing and the Chromis are fantastic to watch in the school. I think I will check out a few more. :)

I'm noticing that you quarantine your fish for a very long time. I've never heard of quarantining your fish unless they look off. +EJ Fishes 76 in a 20g I would have a pair of clowns and a cardinal. Clownfish need to figure out who's the boss then they'll get better. I recently had a trio of cardinals and two of them paired up and killed the other which I never heard of, ever!

From what I’ve read elsewhere I’m going to have to disagree with a couple of them: 1. Blue Green Chromis- Susceptible to uronema as they often aren’t handled well, keeping them in groups is hit or miss but usually in smaller or even medium sized tanks they tend to kill each other off. Singles do fine but many on R2R have suggested a very robust QT regimen for them due to the way they’re handled. This I feel is not something the vast majority of new reefers are able to do well. For an alternative I’d suggest some of the more peaceful damsels of the genus Chrysiptera: Azure, Talbot’s, Springer’s, Rolland’s, Tracey’s, Starcki’s (if you can find them), some say the Yellowtails aren’t that bad either. 2. Lawnmower Blenny- Drab looking and can be hit or miss. I’ve heard a number of people tell me they never accepted prepared foods and just withered away once there wasn’t enough algae to munch on. A Starry, Midas, Tailspot or Bicolor Blenny would be a better pick, Starry Blennies I heard are easier to get eating. Overall though Blennies don’t seem to be a very long lived fish. I personally prefer shrimp gobies over them by a long mile. 3. Yellow Clown Goby- From what I’ve heard, specimens that arrive healthy tend to not have a difficult time getting them to eat. However many people have said that they’re a bit hard to feed and may require live foods to initiate feeding. The rest of the list looks good though. Firefish need a good lid and need to be introduced very early on. IMO Purple, Helfrichi and Exquisite Firefish are all more beautiful than the red one. You could have also included Scissortail, Blue Gudgeon, and Zebra Dartfish which do better in groups while Firefish for some reason kill each other off unless you have a mated pair. You could have also included some basslets (Royal Gramma etc.), even the hardy dwarf angels that are available captive bred (Argi, Acanthops, Coral Beauty). 3.
@AbsoluteZero6714
4 жыл бұрын
Only get Captive Bred Clownfish. Wild caught ones are iffy in their resilience. You could have also included Cardinalfish. Captive Bred (and only CB) Bangaiis, Pajamas, Yellow Striped, Flame Cardinals etc. Bangaiis should be kept alone or as a mated pair. Flame Cardinals should be kept alone or as a mated pair. The Yellow Striped and PJs are more flexible as they’re more peaceful. They can be kept alone, in pairs, or in a small group.

I made sure these guys were all okay together but wanted an opinion from an expert. 2 wyoming white clownfish, 1 tailspot blennie, 2 neon blue gobie (if 2 would cause a rivalry i can drop it down to 1), 2 purple firefish and 1 blue/green chromis. But I dont have a cleanup crew, and I am wondering what I could put in with these guys? I am a beginner in the saltwater hobby, but have been in the freshwater for 3 years. Please help me. I had fresh water fish for over 35 years. I'm moving on to saltwater. I have a brand new 60 gallon tank. I don't have a lot of capital to spend on this tank. I have seen people use HOB filters with success with reef tanks.... what do you suggest. I can't afford a sump right now.
@MadHattersReef

My first reef tank was a 55 gallon with 2 aquaclear 110 HOB filters. Made it through the first year without any problems. What I lacked in filtration I made up for in water changes... I mean a lot of water changes. 20% weekly... Eventually you’ll need to upgrade to a better system but you can start a saltwater aquarium this way.

+catherine peck yep, 30 minutes is a bit fast. but, really depends on the difference in the water. i, personally, measure salinity in bag water, and already know where my tank is, from there i adjust acclimation time, and speed at which water is added. fish can adjust to a drop in salinity much easier than a rise. a lot of stores keep salinity around 1.019-1.021 (i think to keep diseases and parasites down, or symptoms not showing), which is quite low compared to the average reef tank(1.023-1.025). a rise of 3-4-5 points should be done slowly.

VERY NICE VIDEO not a fan of any damsels in any salt water tank they simply can be b's b's your list was awesome choices and spot on ..I had the Fortune of succus in my first yr as salt water hobbyist .Started out with 13.5 evo yep small for the kid 28 gal for my self well that was 2 tank ago there in the basement now were with 45 gal that came with fish . Damsel that i had gave them away they attacked every thing . We condensed went with 6 clown gobies not sure call them schools but i have 3 citron they seem to patrol the whole tank and 3 green there interesting but they green tend to hide close together steal brine shrimp take it to there cave to eat mean cats if you enter that cave . 1 lawn mower who if you have to catch and move it two time in one year well have freak en fun but as in your video add character .We also inherited Harptails one Standard one Canary they sorta act like the gobies one think's every time my hand enter the tank its play time wants food .But here comes my question our question is we inherited a tang grumbles nice fish small tank plenty of area for it its 3 inches long 3 inchs tall it is dark navy blue with a faded yellow it came with the tank along with Harptails .its a peaceful swims as it wishes not a Beginner fish so when and what size tank should this beast of of fish properly be in . Do not think i would have had survived long setting up these tanks if had not had experience of maintaining Discus fish many yrs .cough back when homer simpson first air'd on tv lol. hush i not young i know

Hi, lawnmower blenny's are a bad idea as a beginner fish.....beginners won't have enough algae to keep them alive. i've heard a bunch of crap before about training them to eat flakes or frozen foods but i ran through 4 blennies until my tank was actually ready which was a year and a half later. if the tank is too new, don't do it, i learned the hard way. 2 years later my latest blenny is doing fantastic....theres enough crap on the rocks that keeps him going.

Then all you need are the pods and phytoplankton and voila, a self sustaining pod population. Good luck!

Hawkfish and dottybacks can be rough on their tank mates. If you do add them add them last. To answer your question you should be all set from a Capacity standpoint.
@jesterscorner879

Flame Angels can be very aggressive and don't be surprised if it targets your firefish. My Flame Angel went after my Purple Firefish within about 30 seconds of adding it to my tank and would only let it out of it's burrow if it wasn't watching. They are also prone to coral nipping (not sure if yours is Reef or FOWLR). My Coral Beauty Dwarf Angel has been a much better tank mate than the Flame Angel was. A 55 gallon should be able to handle a few more fish than that if you do it right. I would strongly suggest looking into some of the smaller wrasses (ie Red Lined, Flasher) as they are colorful, active, full of personality and generally good tankmates. Unfortunately you are running a canister filter, which is the most nitrate prone filtration method out there for saltwater tanks (tough to get them all cleaned out properly). Keep it cleaned frequently and keep an eye on the nitrate levels.

Tail Spot blennies don't do well at all! If you get 2, they won't let the other one eat. Then after the other one dies, they stop eating too and die too! And I tried everything I could think of to feed them. So sad! Bob Fenner says they are fish that should never be taking out of the ocean because they don't eat well in captivity. Get a Midas Blenny instead. much better captive Blenny.

Really cool video, though according to IUCN the banggai cardinal fish is an endangered species. So I think it's better not to keep them as pets. They still looks pretty :)

I'm sure you've already done it 10x ...and I'm sure I've watched it haha Redo this list. I'd also like to see the order you would add fish. Say 90gal...which fish first, which ones last
