I still watch it every so often. Also watch War of the Worlds. Found out a couple of years ago while watching it with my brother at my folks place when my dad who is in his late 80s walks in, watches for a few minutes and matter of factly states "I and my California Guard unit are the ones playing the Marine units moving into position and combat". I guess the marines at 29 Palms were not available so the movie producers went to Fort Irwin in Mojave And used my dad's unit who were conducting combat exercises there at the time.

No argument with #1, but my heart's with "Forbidden Planet." Besides being one of the best Shakespeare-inspired films (loosely based on "The Tempest"), it lays a lot of the groundwork for "Star Trek" later. Plus, it's great to see pre-"Airplane" Leslie Nielsen in leading man mode.

I too love Forbidden Planet, but the movie is not without flaws. The Captain speaks of his men as "genetically selected supermen" and notice that everyone in space is lily white. Also, Altaira is treated throughout as an object, not an equal. It's a very entertaining movie, but racism and misogyny are hard to overlook.

Casting all whites notwithstanding, the story and writing of Forbidden Planet were the best of this list. It would take Gene Roddenberry to correct the racial oversight. Remember that most of the 50's movies were cast that way. Compared to the others on the list, it stands out as intelligently written sci-fi.

i absolutely agree! among other things it was a key influence on Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek state of the art effects that still hold up and very sophisticated story that was neither predictable nor cliched. it was also extremely well cast with Walter Pidgeon, Warren Stephens the lovely Ann Francis, and am i the only one that preferred Leslie Nielsen in his early days as a serious actor? he was superb as the ships captain.

You're not wrong steveb503 and john tabler, Forbidden Planet is up there as one of if not the best sci-fi films of ALL time. Great story, thanks in part to William Shakespeare, and with a monster courtesy Sigmund Freud. Throw in great special effects, most of which still stand up today, and you have a masterpiece. Some movies just shouldn't be remade. Other movies have room for improvement and modern-day up dates as it were. Like John Carpenter's remake of Thing from Another World, which he simply titled The Thing, that was a great remake. It sticks to the basic plot, but amps up the paranoia by making the creature a shape shifter, and throwing in some practical effects that were designed to blow your mind. But TDTESS is perfect as is. Adding special effects doesn't do anything for it, and updating the theme was wholly unnecessary as the original concept still holds true today. In fact, in some ways, we're in more danger of destroying ourselves than we were during the cold war.

I have to disagree with the placement of "Forbidden Planet." IMO, this is one of the greatest SF films ever made. Based on The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, it explores the "mindless primitive" that always lurks even within the most civilized of us. Almost all of the films that warn about technology take the position that we have to be careful in regard to the technology we create because we cannot always control it: In a line of stories from Frankenstein through the Terminator films, the technology--either intentionally or because of a glitch--slips organic control and runs amok. However, in Forbidden Planet, the warning is that we need to be careful about the technology we create not because we cannot control the technology but because we cannot control ourselves: The Krell machine is *always* under organic control, always doing what an organic is telling it to do. (The movie is also a warning that when we do create highly advanced technology, we need to remember to put a freakin' *off* switch on it!)

I think Forbidden Planet suffers from being a sci-fi trope. But it shouldn't be blamed for all the cheap imitation storylines that copied it later. I place it as much better than War of the Worlds which had some good effects but chopped out a lot of the themes of H.G. Wells' novel so as not to offend the Christian sensibilities of their target audience. It could have been as thought provoking as the novel, but instead went for simple entertainment.

It is the first movie depicting humanity as a whole, as a unit that can function together. It shows a future, where we can live in peace to pursue common goals like spaceflight. I also like the script very much, although Altaira is still the damsel in distress, she is also very funny and the dialogues are well done and have depth and meaning. For once the monster is not of alien origin, but psychological, and for all of that reasons it is the best movie of the fifties.

Also, "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" should have been dropped from the ten list and replaced with, "The Fly." Finally, "Plan 9 From Outer Space," had no business being mentioned at all. It should have been replaced on the honorable mention list by either, "I Married A Monster From Outer Space," "20,000 Leagues," or, "I Was A Teenaged Werewolf."

It was nice to see 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea finally get the credit it deserves. Even if you're not a Disney fan, 20,000 Leagues accomplished two things of significance: 1) It proved that Science Fiction could be serious, epic, and accessible to the general public where previously it had been basically seen as drive-in monster movies. They took the risk on things like Forbidden Planet and This Island Earth because 20,000 Leagues proved it could be done. 2) It launched an entire subgenre of retro-Victorian Sci-Fi films. Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Time Machine, First Men in the Moon, The Mysterious Island, Five Weeks in a Balloon, Master of the World, even Around the World in 80 Days all owe it to 20,000 Leagues.
@ianraper4304
5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree you Bill Anthony. I think that the praise for '20,000 Leagues.....' was somewhat misplaced. The film that raised awareness regarding sci-fi was 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' which came out three years earlier. It was after 'The Day....' came out that a whole new genre of films known as 'sci-fi ' began and spawned so many films that are regarded with esteem nowadays. Generally speaking, any works by Jules Verne, HG Wells and their ilk that became films can trace their success to 'The Day...'.
@CoryTheRaven
5 жыл бұрын
In that same sense you could argue that all Science Fiction films of the period owe it to Rocketship X-M or Destination Moon too. I don't want to undersell important films that came out before 1954, but I think there is too much inherited bias against Disney that IS underselling 20,000 Leagues. Even just look at the box office: Day the Earth Stood Still made $1.85 million, while 20,000 Leagues made $28 million. The scale of 20,000 Leagues was grander, at 127 minutes vs. Day's 92. 20,000 Leagues was shot on location, in Technicolor. Even the immediately preceding Technicolor Sci-Fi epic - War of the Worlds - only raked in $2 million. And consider that even War of the Worlds was a bug-eyed alien monster movie... a perception of Sci-Fi that has dogged it for a long time. 20,000 Leagues at least helped to break that stereotype. Day may have helped spawn 20,000 Leagues (but really, it was more in shaping what Walt Disney DIDN'T want to do, namely, an alien menace, flying saucer movie), but if you look at the kinds of films that came out immediately in the wake of it, it simply didn't have the kind of transformative influence on the genre you're arguing for. Around the World in 80 Days, for example, was pitched on the success of 20,000 Leagues and that film won Best Picture for 1956. And frankly, as a Jules Verne fan I can attest that the Disney film is pretty much the only reason why anyone today even knows who Verne is. I'm not saying Day was a bad film. I too would put it very high on the list of 1950's Sci-Fi films. But I can't believe how many people are so resentfully opposed to recognizing 20,000 Leagues as am influential, popular, culturally significant, and all-around high quality and entertaining film.
