Like a hammer right? A hammer is a weapon too? And a broom handle? And a sickle? All weapons right? You demonstrated another annoying misconception. You are confusing two definitions of weapons - weapons conextually, as in "this icecicle is the murder weapon" - and weapons as objects, as in "A longsword is a weapon". In the first definition, knives are weapons, but then, everything is a weapon, including a brick, branch, keys, pillow etc. In the second definition, knives are like hammers, they are tools, which are better than most tools as weapons according to the first definition. But so are showels... So yeah.

With batoning, I think people initially think that it's the beating action that's hard on the knife. Hitting the blade's spine with a wood baton isn't that damaging to the knife, except perhaps to the pivot of a folder. The damaging stresses are in how the grain of the wood can impart serious twisting and shearing forces to the blade. You can baton hard on a thin-ish knife blade to crosscut wood grain with little risk of cracking the blade. . Drive that same blade to rip along the grain in oak, and see how a thin blade can really sharply distort as it approaches a knot in oak. That's the thing that cracks a good blade.

I don't think a survival knife needs to be stainless. You mentioned convex grinds being among the first knives. Well carbon steel knives were used successfully for hundreds of years, and are still adequate choices. I still prefer 5160 for my survival knife. But yes, the batoning stigma gets old. To think a high carbon spring steel or other modern steel is going to be damaged hammering it through wood with wood is absurd. I won't say a little knife can't do a big knife job, but I will say a big knife is better at doing small knife jobs than a small knife is at doing big knife jobs. If you've ever tried to field dress an elk with a Leatherman, you know this. Stainless steel is called stainless steel because it "stains less," not because it doesn't stain at all. Never heard the "knife people are serious," and if I did, I think I would bitch slap the person. I just had a flashback to "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels," "We need knives, big fuck off shiny ones..." kzitem.info/news/bejne/u2ajv3ygf56Zamk

here in Yakutia where i live, we have our national knive called "Yakut knife", and they're always have a stiffebing rib on the blade, and ones who don't know (and there's a 95% of people who don't know) ALWAYS say that it's actually a groove to flow blood from victim or prey. And an animal should die from bleeding if you stab it and leave your knife. Man it's so stupid to hear, and they so convinced in this. I actually don't know how 95% of people don't know why smiths use stiffening ribs, but they KNOW for sure that it's a freaking bleeding groove. In russia this problem is exists too.

A stainless knife is not what I would carry as a camp/survival knife. The harder the steel the harder it is to sharpen. Carbon steel can easily be sharpened on a river rock, and as long as you keep it dry it wont rust. Store it in a gallon size ZipLoc bag with an oily cloth if you have to.
@ChrisC.Astrology
6 жыл бұрын
honestly i use carbon steel mostly because you can strike a flint o n the back of it and get sparks for making a flint and steel fire if you do not have a striker with you and also it is easier to sharpen out in the field. but with stainless you have a better edge retention and is better for long use.

Yeah a fire steel harms the edge of course - i modified a lot of my knives on their back that i can use the firesteel as it should be used... but i also used the edge a few times netter 1cm dulled edge than no fire but of course its a shame to use the edge... but lime i said: better 1cm dull edge for a week or something lige that and then go home and resharpen it and maybe modify the back so you dont have to do that again than have no fire but you're right of course and i get your point...i know that doing this harms the edge of every steel a lot and it shouldn't be done but i know more people which don't use their knives - cause of resale value my ones getting no "original edge" they get a mirror polished if i use them for light tasks a few days - so the edge gets better not worse during unde and abuse

Breh convex is easy to do. All you have to do is slightly told the edge to align the apex as you go back and forth with the blade, you will get a convex edge. Unless your a sharpening god, you will put a convex on any knife with any stone (unless it’s scandi) especially with the knives you sharpen off hand.

Another great show guys! Thanks for sticking with it. Good stuff. Not a demand or criticism, but an observation. Europeans are known for many great things throughout the ages. Bows, Swords, knife steels, armor, ship making, bridge building. Americans have a few things we are really good at too. One of those was house building and axe making in the 18th, 19th, 20th centuries. That's right, the United States made some of the best axes in the world once our pioneers sailed from Europe. We made axes with polls for better balance and driving wedges, phantom bevels to reduce sticking in wood, dog leg broad axes for hewing logs, hickory handles to give years of hard service, and we have some of the best shapes you would ever want to fell trees with. It would be neat to see you guys learn how to chop with an axe,and to pick up say a Kelly Perfect 2.5lbs double bit cruiser on a 28" handle, or a 3.5lbs Connecticut on a 31" handle. Maybe even a big Kelly Flint edge 4# double bit on a 33" handle. Learning how to properly design the v notch, and then using these great axes to knock out chips can be pretty satisfying. Theres a lot more to it than simply hitting a tree with an axe. Even the thick European Gransfors axes can do well at felling trees, but not at the same efficiency as a well maintained American axe from our bygone era. Not to mention it helps to build your baton muscles so you can keep beating the hell out of those knives. Anywho, check out "An axe to grind" or "Have broad axe will travel" on youTube. I hope this finds you well, love drinking my morning coffee and listening to your knife talks and tests. I know this is a DBK website, but a good vintage American axe should be in every pioneer's kit. Take care!

Nice video. Will agree to disagree on a couple of points but well done. A survival situation can take place in an urban setting or a wilderness setting so size is relevant to setting imho. I gotta go with Mors Kochanski, Ray mears, Horace Kephart, Nessmuk, Cody Lundin when it comes to what a survival knife is in the wilderness. Above all it depends on who is using it. In the right hands either of those knives will accomplish all tasks needed.
